The thickest, most permeable parts of the aquifer form the Usquepaug-Queen River ground-water reservoir. The 36.1-square mile study area comprises parts of Washington and Kent counties, and includes parts of the towns of Exeter, North Kingstown, Richmond, South Kingstown, and West Greenwich. The report presents geologic and hydrologic information needed for the prediction and management of hydrologic effects of proposed ground-water development. The report describes aquifer lithology, provides historical data on water-level and aquifer-storage changes, provides information on ground-water quality, and presents natural flow characteristics and water quality of streams in the Usquepaug-Queen River area. The data includes 275 ground-water sites; lithologic logs of 66 ground-water sites; water levels for 43 ground- water sites; chemical analyses of 36 ground-water sites; stream discharge measurements from the continuous-record gaging station on the Usquepaug- Queen River; discharge measurements at 10 partial- record stations in the area; chemical analyses of 17 stream sites; and the data from 14 slug tests conducted at ground-water sites.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nU.S.G.S. A compilation of existing data shows that pesticides have been detected in the atmosphere throughout the nation. Most of the available information on pesticides in the atmosphere is from small-scale, short-term studies that seldom lasted more than one year. Only two national-scale, multi-year studies were done since the late 1960's that analyzed for a wide variety of pesticides in air that were in current use at the time. Another large-scale study was done during 1990-91, but was limited to the midwestern and northeastern United States and only analyzed for two classes of herbicides in wet deposition. Most of the pesticides analyzed for were detected in either air or rain, and represent about 25 percent of the total number of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides in current use. The geographical distribution of studies, and the type of sampling and analysis were highly variable with most of the historical study efforts concentrated in the Great Lakes area and California. Air and rain were the main atmospheric matrices sampled, but pesticides were also detected in fog and snow. Reported pesticide concentrations in air and rain were frequently positively correlated to their regional agricultural use. Deviations from this relation could usually be explained by non-agricultural use of pesticides, sampling and analytical difficulties, and environmental persistence. High concentrations of locally used pesticides were found to occur seasonally, usually in conjunction with spring planting of row crops and warm temperatures, but high concentrations also occurred during winter months in those areas where dormant orchards were sprayed. The environmentally more persistent pesticides were detected in the atmosphere at low concen- trations throughout the year. Deposition of airborne pesticides can have significant effects on water quality, but neither the nature of nor the magnitude of these effects can be determined with certainty on the basis of the type of data currently available. The lack of consistent, long-term regional and national monitoring and study of pesticides in atmospheric matrices severely limits assessment capability.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr94506","usgsCitation":"Majewski, M.S., and Capel, P.D., 1995, Pesticides in the atmosphere; distribution, trends, and governing factors: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-506, xiii, 191 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94506.","productDescription":"xiii, 191 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":152407,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0506/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":272568,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0506/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db697904","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Majewski, Michael S. majewski@usgs.gov","contributorId":440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Majewski","given":"Michael","email":"majewski@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":181770,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Capel, Paul D. 0000-0003-1620-5185 capel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1620-5185","contributorId":1002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Capel","given":"Paul","email":"capel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37778,"text":"WMA - Integrated Modeling and Prediction Division","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":181771,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The data will be used to document water-quality conditions prior to implementation of a proposal to reuse treated wastewater to irrigate city properties in Olmos Basin and Brackenridge Parks and to augment flows in the Olmos Creek/San Antonio River system.
\n
Benthic macroinvertebrate, periphyton, and phy toplankton communities were sampled at three sites along a 4.2-kilometer reach of the Olmos Creek/San Antonio River system. Total mean densities of benthic macroinvertebrates for the three sites ranged from 1,000 to 15,000 organisms per square meter. The most abundant macroinvertebrates were the class Insecta (insects). Total densities of periphyton ranged from 700 to 86,000 cells per square millimeter. Cyanophyta (blue-green algae) and Bacillariophyta (diatoms) were the predominant periphyton organisms. Total densities of phytoplankton ranged from 940 to 21,000 cells per milliliter. Diatoms and Chlorophyta (green algae) made up most of the rest of the phytoplankton. Mean diversity index for the three sites ranged from 1.0 to 2.1 for benthic macroinvertebrates. The diversity index for all sites ranged from 1.5 to 3.1 for periphyton and 0.9 to 2.5 for phytoplankton.
\n
Hardness ranged from 220 to 280 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, and alkalinity ranged from 173 to 213 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. The largest dissolved nitrate concentration was 1.68 milligrams per liter. Dissolved ammonia nitrogen generally was less than 0.100 milligram per liter. The largest total phosphorus concentration was 0.080 milligram per liter, over one-half of which was dissolved orthophosphate.
\n
Total aluminum and total iron were the only trace elements in water to exceed the reporting threshold by large concentrations. Total aluminum concentrations ranged from 100 to 250 micrograms per liter, and total iron concentrations ranged from 70 to 280 micrograms per liter. Lead was the most prominent trace element in bottommaterial samples with concentrations ranging from 40 to 190 micrograms per gram. CIMRI staff digitized aeromagnetic data for eastern-most Guyana as part of a preliminary regional assessment of minerals in the Guyana Shield, South America. The data were digitized from 145 aeromagnetic contour maps at a scale of 1:50,000 and merged into a single digital data set. The data were used to examine the Precambrian shield, greenstone belts, and other tectonic boundaries as well as explore ideas concerning mineral deposits within the area. A subset of these digital data were presented to the Guyanan government during early 1995 (Pierce, 1994). This Open-File report, consisting of this text and seven (7) 3.5\" IBM-PC compatible ASCII magnetic disks, makes the digital data available to the public. Information regarding the source of data and subsequent processing is included below.

The data were collected in Guyana by two contractors at different times. The first data were collected from 1962 to 1963. These data are several aeromagnetic surveys covering parts of 12 quadrangles funded by the United Nations and flown by Aero Service Corporation. The second and more extensive data set was collected from 1971 to 1972 by the Canadian International Development Agency flown by Terra Surveys Ltd. under a contract with the Geological Survey of Guyana. The Guyana Government published the data as contour maps that are available in Georgetown through the Guyana Government. Coverage extends from about 2°45*N to 8°30*N latitude and from 60°0'W to 57°0'W longitude (see Figure 1.). The contour maps were digitized at points where the magnetic contours intersect the flight lines.

The data files include XYZ ASCII files, XYZ binary files, ASCII grids, and binary \"standard USGS\" grids. The study included a detailed field-measurement program and the calibration, validation, and application of a physically realistic numerical model of hydro- dynamics and transport through a 40-kilometer reach of the estuary. Water level, salinity, water temperature, wind speed and direction, current velocity, and bathymetric data were collected during March 1988 through September 1992. Additional data from pre-existing continuous-record streamflow gaging stations and meteorological stations also were used. A two-dimensional, vertically averaged hydrodynamic and solute transport model was applied to the study reach. The model domain was discretized into 200- by 200-meter computational cells. Model calibration was achieved through adjustment of model parameters for the period June 1-24, 1991. Additional simulations for periods in 1989 and 1991 were run to validate the model. The model was calibrated and validated for water levels ranging from -0.104 to 0.908 meters, salinities ranging from 2.8 to 22.0 parts per thousand, and wind speed from calm to 9 meters per second. The model was tested for stratified and unstratified conditions. Simulated and observed level, salinity, and velocity data were used to evaluate the model. The calibrated model was applied to simulate flows, circulation, and salinity distributions for four simulation periods in 1989 and 1991. Comparisons of simulated results for a period in June 1991 were made between the Neuse and Pamlico models to characterize differences between the two systems.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section,","doi":"10.3133/ofr94511","usgsCitation":"Robbins, J.C., and Bales, J., 1995, Simulation of hydrodynamics and solute transport in the Neuse River estuary: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-511, vi, 85 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94511.","productDescription":"vi, 85 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153996,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0511/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50185,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0511/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f7e4b07f02db5f22b1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robbins, Jeanne C. 0000-0001-7804-0764 jrobbins@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7804-0764","contributorId":1586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robbins","given":"Jeanne","email":"jrobbins@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":183013,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bales, Jerad","contributorId":47390,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bales","given":"Jerad","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183014,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Field treatments tested were chilling, adjusting sample pH to less than 2 with sulfuric acid and chilling, and adding 52 milligrams of mercury (II) chloride per liter of sample and chilling. Field treatments of samples collected for determination of ammonium, nitrate plus nitrite, nitrite, dissolved Kjeldahl nitrogen, orthophosphate, and dissolved phosphorus included 0.45-micrometer membrane filtration. Only total Kjeldahl nitrogen and total phosphorus were determined in unfiltered samples. Data reported here pertain to water samples collected in April and May 1992 from 15 sites within the continental United States. Also included in this report are analytical results for nutrient concentrations in synthetic reference samples that were analyzed concurrently with real samples.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nOpen-File Reports Section/ESIC [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr95141","usgsCitation":"Patton, C.J., and Truitt, E.P., 1995, U.S. Geological Survey nutrient preservation experiment: Nutrient concentration data for surface-, ground-, and municipal-supply water samples and quality-assurance samples: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-141, x, 140 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95141.","productDescription":"x, 140 p.","costCenters":[{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":49948,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0141/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":153002,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0141/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2ae4b07f02db612421","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Patton, Charles J. cjpatton@usgs.gov","contributorId":809,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Patton","given":"Charles","email":"cjpatton@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":182596,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Truitt, Earl P.","contributorId":65877,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Truitt","given":"Earl","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182597,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We anticipate applications for such sensors in providing the lifeline and emergency-response communities with an immediate, comprehensive picture of the extent and characteristics of likely damage. We also foresee their use as 'filler' instruments sited between research-grade instruments to provide spatially detailed and near-field records of large earthquakes (on the order of 1000 stations at 600-m intervals in San Fernando Valley, population 1.2 million, for example). The latter applications would provide greatly improved attenuation relationships for building codes and design, the first examples of mainshock information (that is, potentially nonlinear regime) for microzonation, and a suite of records for structural engineers. We also foresee possible applications in monitoring structural inter-story drift during earthquakes, possibly leading to local and remote alarm functions as well as design criteria.\r\n\r\nThis effort appears to be the first of its type at the USGS. It is spurred by rapid advances in sensor technology and the recognition of potential non-classical applications. In this report, we estimate sensor noise spectra, relative transfer functions and cross-axis sensitivity of six inexpensive sensors. We tested three micromachined ('silicon-chip') sensors in addition to classical force-balance and piezoelectric examples. This sample of devices is meant to be representative, not comprehensive.\r\n\r\nSensor noise spectra were estimated by recording system output with the sensor mounted on a pneumatically supported 545-kg optical-bench isolation table. This isolation table appears to limit ground motion to below our system noise level. These noise estimates include noise introduced by signal-conditioning circuitry, the analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and noise induced in connecting wiring by ambient electromagnetic fields in our suburban laboratory. These latter sources are believed to dominate sensor noise in the quieter sensors we tested. Transfer functions were obtained relative to a research grade force-balance accelerometer (a Kinemetrics TM FBA-11) by shaking the sensors simultaneously on the same shake table and taking spectral ratios with the output of the FBA- 11. This reference sensor is said to have 120 db dynamic range (-+20 bits, though we only digitized it at 16 bits resolution and drove it with relatively small signals). We did not test temperature sensitivity, which is thought to be a significant issue at least for the silicon devices.\r\n\r\nThough these tests were not designed to be definitive (our anticipated applications do not demand research-grade precision), our tests do appear to have been successful in estimating relative transfer functions from about 0.3 to 50 Hz. Most sensors performed adequately in this range, with essentially fiat relative transfer functions. Noise tests appear to measure sensor noise well for the noisier (generally less expensive) instruments from about 0.1 to 50 Hz.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr95555","usgsCitation":"Evans, J.R., and Rogers, J.A., 1995, Relative performance of several inexpensive accelerometers: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-555, 38 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95555.","productDescription":"38 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":151948,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0555/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48243,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0555/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c075","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Evans, John R. jrevans@usgs.gov","contributorId":529,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Evans","given":"John","email":"jrevans@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":179861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rogers, John A.","contributorId":82704,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rogers","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179862,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
