Solute and particulate contaminants decreased rapidly downstream from headwater sources, but some extended through an extensive marsh system. Particulate contaminants penetrated through the marsh system, effectively resulting in food web contamination downstream of the marshes. Metals differed in their bioavailability within and below the marsh system. Cadmium was most consistently accumulated in the food web, and the general order of downstream mobilization of bioavailable metals appears to be Cd, Zn > Cu > As, Ni. Although gas hydrate has been recovered in cores from scientific drilling in both the Pacific and the Atlantic, drilling in areas exhibiting a BSR has usually been avoided because of the perceived risk of releasing free gas trapped beneath the hydrated sediments. To carry out a quantitative analysis of the BSR, the seismic data were reprocessed using signature deconvolution and true amplitude recovery techniques. Synthetic seismograms that were created using acoustic parameters extracted from the seismic data and physical properties from Site 688 borehole measurement were compared to the observed seismic data to estimate the thickness of the free-gas zone. Results indicate the BSR is discontinuous laterally. Where the BSR is of high amplitude, free gas in a zone 5.5-17 m thick beneath the hydrated sediments provides the observed waveform; where the BSR amplitude is low, the free-gas zone is much thinner than 5.5 m or is entirely absent.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Geologists","doi":"10.1306/0C9B288F-1710-11D7-8645000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Miller, J.J., Lee, M.W., and von Huene, R.E., 1991, An analysis of a seismic reflection from the base of a gas hydrate zone, offshore Peru: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, v. 75, no. 5, p. 910-924, https://doi.org/10.1306/0C9B288F-1710-11D7-8645000102C1865D.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"910","endPage":"924","numberOfPages":"15","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":225082,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Peru","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -75,\n -16\n ],\n [\n -75,\n -4\n ],\n [\n -82.5,\n -4\n ],\n [\n -82.5,\n -16\n ],\n [\n -75,\n -16\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"75","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e9eee4b0c8380cd48533","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, J. Water temperatures were warmer in 1983 than in 1984 as indicated by the earlier appearance and greater depth of the seasonal thermocline. Correspondingly, schools of capelin appeared earlier, were more abundant, and extended deeper in the water column in 1983 than in 1984. Most capelin were found between the surface and the 5°C isotherm. Line transect methods have the advantage of automatically taking into account “visibility bias” due to detectability difference of animals at different distances from the transect line. However, line transect methods must overcome two difficulties when applied to inaccurate recording of sighting distances due to high travel speeds, so that in fact only a few reliable distance class counts are available. We propose a unimodal detection function that provides an estimate of the effective area lost due to the blind strip, under the assumption that a line of perfect detection exists parallel to the transect line. The unimodal detection function can also be applied when a blind strip is absent, and in certain instances when the maximum probability of detection is less than 100%. A simple bootstrap procedure to estimate standard error is illustrated. Finally, we present results from a small set of Monte Carlo experiments.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/2532661","usgsCitation":"Quang, P.X., and Lanctot, R.B., 1991, A line transect model for aerial surveys: Biometrics, v. 47, no. 3, p. 1089-1102, https://doi.org/10.2307/2532661.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"1089","endPage":"1102","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":335066,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge","volume":"47","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"589c3c50e4b0efcedb74111d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Quang, Pham Xuan","contributorId":179137,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Quang","given":"Pham","email":"","middleInitial":"Xuan","affiliations":[{"id":7211,"text":"University of Alaska, Fairbanks","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":662905,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lanctot, Richard B.","contributorId":31894,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lanctot","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":135,"text":"Biological Resources Division","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":6987,"text":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Sevice","active":true,"usgs":false},{"id":7029,"text":"Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada","active":true,"usgs":false},{"id":17786,"text":"Carleton University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":662906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The spatially heterogeneous fluid velocity was assumed to be the only mechanism of solute movement; local or pore scale dispersion and molecular diffusion were assumed to be negligible. The particle-tracking scheme used by Desbarats consisted of routing particles from node to node in a finite difference grid. In this scheme, the direction of an individual particle is randomly selected and the prob- ability associated with the particle movement in a given direction is proportional to the fluid flux in that direction. The same method was used by Moreno et al. [1988] to investigate advective transport in a variable-aperture planar fracture.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/90WR02309","usgsCitation":"Goode, D., and Shapiro, A.M., 1991, Comment on “Macrodispersion in sand-shale sequences” by A. During the 1987-88 and 1988-89 hunting seasons, rewards of between 50 and $100 were required to yield a reporting rate near 1.0. We estimated reporting rate of standard bands to be 0.32. Sixty-eight holes drilled in the Lakhra/Jherruck, Thatta, and Indus East coal fields indicate that presently known and mined coal fields in southern Sindh are not isolated coal occurrences. Rather, much of southern Sindh, including the Thar Desert, is underlain by strata that contain coal beds.

More than 400 core and mine samples were collected for proximate and ultimate analysis and determination of major, minor and trace elements; also, lithologie logs were prepared from description of rock cuttings and core. Original coal resources of 1,080 million tones have been estimated for 7 out of 9 coal zones in parts of the Lakhra area, where coal-bed thicknesses range from a few centimeters to 5 m. In the Sonda/Jherruk area, 3,700 million tones of coal have been identified, the thickest coal bed intercepted being 6.3 meters. The apparent rank of the coal in these fields ranges from lignite A to sub-bituminous C. Averaged analytical results on an as received basis indicate the coal beds contain 28.4 % moisture, 18,3 % ash, 4.7 % sulfur, 25,2 % fixed carbon, 27.9 % volatile matter, and 33.1% oxygen. Average calorific value for Lakhra coal samples is about 3,660 Kcal/kg, whereas that of Sonda/Jherruk samples is about 3,870 Kcal/kg. After 30 years, I still recall the pain and pleasure of creeping illicitly out of the house in the small hours of the morning for the few moments of satisfaction when the boiling, bouncing image of Jupiter would come to rest momentarily in sharp focus, the Galilean satellites strung out like brilliant beads on either side of the flattened disc. For me, then, the most remarkable piece of volcanology in the last twenty years was the discovery of active volcanism on Io, one of those tiny points of light I grew to know so well, though I was never really sure which satellite was which. To be sure, flying in a helicopter over the wasteland surrounding Mount St. Helens shortly after the 1980 eruption left an indelible, visceral impression on me, as it must have done to a great many others. But the discovery of volcanism on Io was a stunning piece of pure science.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Francis, P., 1991, Volcanoes in outer space and inner space: Earthquakes & Volcanoes (USGS), v. 22, no. 3, p. 151-153.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"151","endPage":"153","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314988,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"22","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56ab49d9e4b07ca61bfea61e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Francis, P.","contributorId":152666,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Francis","given":"P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":590092,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These geochemical trends reflect a mantle mixing process with a systematic change in the proportions of mixing components. We studied lavas from a 250-m-thick stratigraphic sequence in Honomanu Gulch that includes the oldest (∼1.1 Ma) subaerial basalts exposed at Haleakaka. The lower 200 m of section is intercalated tholeiitic and alkalic basalt with similar isotopic (Sr, Nd, Pb) and incompatible element abundance ratios (e.g., Nb/La, La/Ce, La/Sr, Hf/Sm, Ti/Eu). These lava compositions are consistent with derivation of alkalic and tholeiitic basalt by partial melting of a compositionally homogeneous, clinopyroxene-rich, garnet lherzolite source. The intercalated tholeiitic and alkalic Honomanu lavas may reflect a process which tapped melts generated in different portions of a rising plume, and we infer that the tholeiitic lavas reflect a melting range of ∼10% to 15%, while the intercalated alkalic lavas reflect a range of ∼6.5% to 8% melting. However, within the uppermost 50 m of section. 87Sr/86Sr decreases from 0.70371 to 0.70328 as eruption age decreased from ∼0.97 Ma to 0.78 Ma. We infer that as lava compositions changed from intercalated tholeiitic and alkalic lavas to only alkalic lavas at ∼0.93 Ma, the mixing proportions of source components changed with a MORB-related mantle component becoming increasingly important as eruption age decreased.

","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF00306433","issn":"00107999","usgsCitation":"Chen, C., Frey, F., Garcia, M., Dalrymple, G.B., and Hart, S., 1991, The tholeiite to alkalic basalt transition at Haleakala Volcano, Maui, Hawaii: Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, v. 106, no. 2, p. 183-200, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00306433.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"183","endPage":"200","numberOfPages":"18","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":225038,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Haleakala Volcano","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156.280517578125,\n              20.675190117067377\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.21253967285156,\n              20.675190117067377\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.21253967285156,\n              20.72978628596697\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.280517578125,\n              20.72978628596697\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.280517578125,\n              20.675190117067377\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"106","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb0fbe4b08c986b325191","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chen, C.-Y.","contributorId":41973,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chen","given":"C.-Y.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":374772,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Frey, F.A.","contributorId":12618,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frey","given":"F.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":374771,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Garcia, M.O.","contributorId":47868,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garcia","given":"M.O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":374773,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dalrymple, G.
