The lake was divided with a sea curtain into two basins, one acidified with sulfuric acid to pH 5.6 for two years and the other an untreated reference site (mean pH 6.1), to document the effects of acidification. Trace-metal-free protocols were used to measure Hg at the picomolar level in air and water. Total gaseous Hg in air samples averaged 2.0 ng/m</span><sup>3</sup><span>. Total Hg in unfiltered water samples collected in 1986 after the fall overturn averaged about 1 ng/L in the acidified and reference basins. Mercury in surficial sediments was strongly correlated with volatile matter content and ranged from 10 to about 170 ng/g (dry weight) in both basins. Total Hg concentrations in whole, calendar age-1 yellow perch (</span><i>Perca flavescens</i><span>), sampled after one year of residence in the lake, averaged 114 ng/g (fresh weight) in the reference basin and 135 ng/g in the acidified basin – a highly significant (</span><i>p</i><span> &lt; 0.01) difference. The mean whole-body burden (quantity) of Hg in age-1 perch did not differ between basins after the first year, but was significantly greater in the treatment basin than in the reference basin after the second year of acidification. Differences between the two basins in the bioaccumulation of Hg were attributed to internal (within-lake) processes that influence the bioavailability of the metal. An initial Hg budget for the treatment basin of Little Rock Lake showed that atmospheric deposition and sedimentary remobilization of Hg are potentially important processes influencing its biogeochemical cycling and uptake by fish.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"SETAC","publisherLocation":"Brussels, Belgium","doi":"10.1002/etc.5620090709","usgsCitation":"Wiener, J.G., Fitzgerald, W., Watras, C.J., and Rada, R.G., 1990, Partitioning and bioavailability of mercury in an experimentally acidified Wisconsin lake: Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, v. 9, no. 7, p. 909-918, https://doi.org/10.1002/etc.5620090709.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"909","endPage":"918","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":258268,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1002/etc.5620090709","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":258285,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","volume":"9","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1990-07-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a753ce4b0c8380cd77a6b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wiener, James G.","contributorId":93853,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wiener","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":17913,"text":"River Studies Center, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":355726,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fitzgerald, William F.","contributorId":77408,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fitzgerald","given":"William F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":355724,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Watras, Carl J.","contributorId":88870,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Watras","given":"Carl","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":355725,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Rada, Ronald G.","contributorId":14786,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rada","given":"Ronald","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":355723,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Four treatments were used: open water (cageless) controls, cage-effect controls (partially enclosed cages), exclosures (all fish removed), and enclosures (cages stocked with a known density of bluegills Lepomis macrochirus, Rafinesque). Bluegill predation at the density tested (one 70 mm fish per 0.37m<sup>2</sup>) did not depress Vallisneria associated invertebrate density. Mean invertebrate abundance and biomass (number and dry weight of invertebrates per g dry plant weight) increased in both exclosures and enclosures relative to open water controls. The most likely explanation is that the cages excluded some vertebrate predator(s) from those two treatments and decreased predation pressure within the cages. Large invertebrates, such as Hyalella azteca, Enallagma sp., Gyraulus sp., and Physa sp., increased in abundance within cages, whereas, small invertebrates such as chironomid larvae decreased in abundance.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"Philadelphia, PA","doi":"10.1080/02705060.1990.9665242","collaboration":"Abstract has subscript/superscript to be fixed","usgsCitation":"Chilton, E., and Margraf, F., 1990, Effects of fish predation on invertebrates associated with a macrophyte in Lake Onalaska, Wisconsin: Journal of Freshwater Ecology, v. 5, no. 3, p. 289-296, https://doi.org/10.1080/02705060.1990.9665242.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"289","endPage":"296","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":258414,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":258397,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1080/02705060.1990.9665242","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"Lake Onalaska","volume":"5","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2011-01-11","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a06f2e4b0c8380cd514bf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chilton, E.W. These data files include information on planimetric base categories, such as transportation, hydrography, and boundaries. The second type, called a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), consists of a sampled array of elevations for ground positions that are usually at regularly spaced intervals. The third type, Land Use and Land Cover digital data, provide information on nine major classes of land use such as urban, agricultural, or forest as well as associated map data such as political units and Federal land ownership. Based on positive “fold” tests, the characteristic remanent magnetizations were inferred to predate accretion-related deformation and metamorphism, and to have been acquired during or soon after deposition of these rocks. Thus, the paleomagnetic data were thought to provide direct information on ancient oceanic plate motions. However, the plate motions implied by some of these paleomagnetic data are problematic (e.g., exceptional plate velocities), and uniform-polarity magnetizations in almost all of these rocks indicate the possibility of remagnetization. Recent work on oceanic rocks in similar subduction complexes of Japan and Mexico have shown that they were most likely chemically remagnetized during accretion prior to disruption of the original stratigraphic sequences. Modern analogs indicate that the oceanic rocks in Mexico were probably remagnetized while still part of a shallow-dipping subducting slab (&lt;10°) at the base of an accretionary prism. Assuming these rocks were near horizontal at the time of remagnetization, paleolatitudes at which these rocks were subducted and subsequent arc-parallel displacements along the western margin of North America can be inferred. In this paper, Franciscan rocks in northern California are reinterpreted as also having been remagnetized prior to accretion-related deformation. This scenario satisfies both geologic and paleomagnetic constraints for these rocks, and resolves conflicts between data indicating both remagnetization and tectonic displacement. Transport of the Laytonville Limestone from the southern hemisphere is not required. Paleolatitudes of subduction and remagnetization in the northern hemisphere (12° to 33°) appear to be inversely proportional to age of accretion (middle Cretaceous to Oligocene) for the Franciscan rocks. Subsequent northward diplacements (800 to 3700 km) and clockwise rotations (56° and 154°) of these rocks inferred from the paleomagnetic data are consistent with potential displacements along the western margin of North America during late Mesozoic and Cenozoic time calculated using examples of modern subduction zones and current plate reconstruction models.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TC009i005p01221","issn":"02787407","usgsCitation":"Hagstrum, J.T., 1990, Remagnetization and northward coastwise transport of Franciscan Complex rocks, northern California: A reinterpretation of the paleomagnetic data: Tectonics, v. 9, no. 5, p. 1221-1233, https://doi.org/10.1029/TC009i005p01221.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"1221","endPage":"1233","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223352,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"northern California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -125.13609326368268,\n              42.305003717566734\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.13609326368268,\n              37.23035631411469\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.33854660219356,\n              37.23035631411469\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.33854660219356,\n              42.305003717566734\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.13609326368268,\n              42.305003717566734\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"9","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-26","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505aa6c0e4b0c8380cd85024","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hagstrum, Jonathan T. 0000-0002-0689-280X jhag@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0689-280X","contributorId":3474,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hagstrum","given":"Jonathan","email":"jhag@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":372602,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These correlations were partly in conflict with previously reported ages and geologic interpretations of structures in the Spring Mountains.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TC009i003p00467","issn":"02787407","usgsCitation":"Fleck, R.J., and Carr, M.D., 1990, The age of the Keystone thrust: Laser-fusion 40Ar/39Ar dating of foreland basin deposits, southern Spring Mountains, Nevada: Tectonics, v. 9, no. 3, p. 467-476, https://doi.org/10.1029/TC009i003p00467.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"467","endPage":"476","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223899,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"southern Spring Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.97449322919012,\n              36.37831632531058\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.97449322919012,\n              36.07299384539759\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.74833389423927,\n              36.07299384539759\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.74833389423927,\n              36.37831632531058\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.97449322919012,\n              36.37831632531058\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"9","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-26","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505ba9afe4b08c986b32242d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fleck, Robert J. 0000-0002-3149-8249 fleck@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3149-8249","contributorId":214469,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fleck","given":"Robert","email":"fleck@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":371650,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Carr, Michael D.","contributorId":106178,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carr","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":371651,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Above-ground primary productivity of short form Spartina alterniflora, the dominant habitat of the system, was 664 g m-2 y-1. Productivity of the other dominant angiosperm (Zostera marina) was estimated to range from 444?987 g m-2 y-1. The marsh creekbank habitat was dominated by an intertidal zone of fucoid algae (Ascophyllum nodosum ecad. scorpioides, 1179 g m-2 y-1; Fucus vesiculosus, 426 g m-2 y-1), mixed intertidal filamentous algae (91 g m-2 y-1), and a subtidal zone of assorted macroalgae (68 g m-2 y-1). Intertidal mudflats were dominated by Cladophora gracilis, with net production ranging from 59?637 g m-2 y-1. These angiosperm and macrophyte and macrophyte dominated habitats produce over 3 ? 106 kg y-1 of biomass (1?2 ? 106 kg carbon y-1). Twenty-eight per cent (28%) of this carbon production is derived from the Zostera and macroalgae habitats. Although S. alterniflora is considered the major macrophyte primary producer in Nauset Marsh and other north temperate salt marshes, it is concluded that other habitats also contribute significantly to total system carbon production.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","doi":"10.1016/0272-7714(90)90075-3","usgsCitation":"Roman, C.T., Able, K., Lazzari, M., and Heck, K., 1990, Primary productivity of angiosperm and macroalgae dominated habitats in a New England salt marsh: a comparative analysis: Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, v. 30, no. 1, p. 35-45, https://doi.org/10.1016/0272-7714(90)90075-3.","productDescription":"35-45","startPage":"35","endPage":"45","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200251,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":18019,"rank":200,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0272-7714(90)90075-3","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"volume":"30","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a90e4b07f02db6557e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Roman, C. Most pond waters were dilute (3median coductivity = 57 umhos cm</span>−1<span>&nbsp;(1 umhos cm</span>−1<span>&nbsp;= 0·1 mSm</span>−1<span>)), acidic (median pH = 4·82), and highly colored (median = 140 Pt-Co units). Most acidity was due to abundant organic acids. Salamander survival to hatching was over 80% at 8 of 12 ponds monitored. Complete mortality, preceded by gross abnormalities, was observed only among embryos in the most acidic spawning pond (pH 4·3−4·5) in both years. Embryo transfers between ponds and laboratory studies indicated that reduced survival was due to the interaction of low pH with high tannin-lignin concentration. The use of amphibian embryonic survival to indicate acid rain effects is complicated by multiple habitat parameters and should only be attempted in conjunction with long-term population monitoring.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0006-3207(90)90063-U","usgsCitation":"Portnoy, J.W., 1990, Breeding biology of the spotted salamander Ambystoma We found no significant differences between sex and age classes in blood lead levels nor were there differences between residents and migrants. Significant differences were found between months with the highest blood lead levels occurring during the fall/winter period. Approximately one-third (35.8%) of the Golden Eagle population sampled had elevated blood lead levels, values similar to those reported for free-flying California Condors. Given this rate of exposure, if the proposed releases of California Condors back to the wild are to succeed, whether in their former range or elsewhere, any potential for lead poisoning must be reduced. It is essential that we identify the sources of the lead, the seasonal and geographic distribution of these sources, and develop management strategies to reduce or eliminate the hazard.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.2307/1368729","usgsCitation":"Pattee, O.H., Bloom, P., Scott, J.M., and Smith, M.R., 1990, Lead hazards within the range of In recent years, bluebird populations have increased to levels similar to those observed during the first year (1966) of the survey. These models provide a valuable tool for studying the foraging behavior of an organism. As with any other tool, the models are most effective when properly used. For example, to obtain a robust test of a foraging model, Stephens and Krebs (1986) recommend experimental designs in which four questions are answered in the affirmative. First, do the foragers play the same \"game\" as the model? Sec- ond, are the assumptions of the model met? Third, does the test rule out alternative possibilities? Finally, are the appropriate variables measured? Negative an- swers to any of these questions could invalidate the model and lead to confusion over the usefulness of foraging theory in conducting ecological studies.</p><p> Gaines (1989) attempted to determine whether American Tree Sparrows (<i>Spizella arborea</i>) foraged by a time (Krebs 1973) or number expectation rule (Gibb 1962), or in a manner consistent with the predictions of Charnov's (1976) marginal value theorem (MVT). Gaines (1989: 118) noted appropriately that field tests of foraging models frequently involve uncontrollable circumstances; thus, it is often difficult to meet the assumptions of the models. Gaines also states (1989: 118) that \"violations of the assumptions are also in- formative but do not constitute robust tests of predicted hypotheses,\" and that \"the problem can be avoided by experimental analyses which concurrently test mutually exclusive hypotheses so that alter- native predictions will be eliminated if falsified.\" There is a problem with this approach because, when major assumptions of models are not satisfied, it is not justifiable to compare a predator's foraging behavior with the model's predictions. I submit that failing to follow the advice offered by Stephens and Krebs (1986) can invalidate tests of foraging models.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","usgsCitation":"Tome, M., 1990, Comparisons of patch-use models for wintering American tree sparrows: The Auk, v. 107, no. 1, p. 210-211.","productDescription":"2 p.","startPage":"210","endPage":"211","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":196595,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":341171,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/4087827"}],"volume":"107","issue":"1","publicComments":"This commentary is in response to the following publication: <i> Gaines, S. 1989. Significant differences between sexes during the prenestling period were found for foraging height and substrate height (foraging method, plant species/substrate, perch diameter, horizontal location from trunk, and prey location were not significantly different). During the nestling period, this divergence between sexes was evident for foraging height, substrate height, substrate / tree species, and prey location. Additionally, male warblers significantly altered their behavior for all seven foraging variables between the two periods, whereas females exhibited changes similar to those of males for five of the foraging variables. This parallel shift suggests a strong behavioral response by both sexes to proximate factors (such as vegetation structure, and prey abundance and distribution) that varied throughout the breeding season. Sex-specific foraging behavior during the prenestling period was best explained by differences in reproductive responsibilities rather than by the theory of intersexual competition for limited resources. During the nestling period, neither hypothesis by itself explained foraging divergences adequately. However, when integrated with the temporal responses of the warblers to changes in prey availability, reproductive responsibilities seemed to be of primary importance in explaining intersexual niche partitioning during the nestling period. We emphasize the importance of considering both intersexual and intraseasonal variation when quantifying a species' foraging ecology.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","usgsCitation":"Petit, L.J., Petit, D.R., Petit, K., and Fleming, W.J., 1990, Intersexual and temporal variation in foraging ecology of prothonotary warblers during the breeding season: The Auk, v. 107, no. 1, p. 133-145.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"133","endPage":"145","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194355,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":341168,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/4087811"}],"volume":"107","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48b2e4b07f02db530d51","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Petit, L. We analyzed seven foraging variables to determine if this population exhibited annual variation in foraging behavior. Based on nearly 3,000 foraging maneuvers, most variables showed significant interyear variation during the four prenestling and three nestling periods we studied. This interyear variation probably was due -to proximate, environmental cues--such as distribution and abundance of arthropods - which, in turn, were influenced by local weather conditions. Researchers should consider the consequences of combining foraging behavior data collected in different years, because resolution of ecological trends may be sacrificed by considering only general patterns of foraging ecology and not the dynamics of those activities. Eggs were laid over a 139-day period and incubation averaged 16.6 days. The female incubated 85.2% of daylight hours and males fed incubating females. Modal clutch size was 2 (x super(-) = 2.0) and an average of 1.4 nestlings fledged per successful nest. Nestlings were in the nest an average of 25.3 days. Both females and males fed nestlings with the rate of feeding decreasing as the nestlings grew older. Palila nesting success was 25%, reduced primarily by hatching failure and depredation of nestlings. Hatching failure, due to inviable eggs or desertion, occurred in 41% of nests with eggs (55% of nest mortality). Egg depredation was rare (5% of nest mortality).
