It is used particularly when other methods for managing liquid waste are either not possible or too costly. Interest in subsurface injection as a waste-disposal method stems partly from recognition that surface disposal of liquid waste may establish a potential for degrading freshwater resources. Where hydrogeologic conditions are suitable and where surface disposal may cause contamination, subsurface injection is considered an attractive alternative for waste disposal. Decisions to use subsurface injection need to be made with care because, where hydrogeologic conditions are not suitable for injection, the risk to water resources, particularly ground water, could be great. Selection of subsurface injection as a waste-disposal method requires thoughtful deliberation and, in some instances, extensive data collection and analyses. \r\n\r\nSubsurface injection is a geological method of waste disposal. Therefore, many State and local governmental officials and environmentally concerned citizens who make decisions about waste-disposal alternatives may know little about it. The area encompasses approximately 72,240 acres in Toiyabe National Forest in Mono County, California, and Lyon and Douglas Counties, Nevada.</p>\n<p>This roadless area, which lies just east of the Sierra Nevada range, exhibits rugged topography. Elevations range from about 6,160 feet near Devil's Gate to 11,673 feet at Mount Patterson.</p>\n<p>Geochemical sampling was conducted during 1978, 1979, and 1980. This report summarizes the results of that investigation and provides details of the geochemical evaluation used in producing the final mineral resource assessment of the study area (Brem and others, 1984).</p>\n<p>Map A shows the locations of all sites where rock samples were collected for this report and the distributions of anomalous concentrations for 12 elements in the 127 rock samples collected. In a similar manner, map B shows the collection sites for 59 samples of minus-60-mesh stream sediment, and 59 samples of nonmagnetic heavy-mineral concentrate derived from stream sediment and also shows the distributions of anomalous concentrations for 13 elements in the stream-sediment samples and 17 elements in the concentrate samples. The increases exceeded 270 milligrams per liter per year at two stations and 165 milligrams per liter per year at the third station.</p>\n<p>The composition of dissolved constituents in the Colorado River basin changes from predominantly sodium and chloride ions in the upper basin to predominantly calcium and bicarbonate ions in the lower basin. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency secondary drinking-water regulations of 500 milligrams per liter for total dissolved solids was exceeded 95 percent of the time at each station on the main stem of the Colorado River in the upper basin. In the middle Colorado River basin, the Environmental Protection Agency secondary drinking-water regulations for total dissolved solids was exceeded approximately 95 percent of the time at most stations.</p>\n<p>Nutrient concentrations in the Colorado River basin generally were low. Only one sample exceeded the level set for nitrate nitrogen, and no other nutrient species exceeded Environmental Protection Agency levels. A general upward trend was detected in organic nitrogen and total nitrogen, but concentrations still remained low.</p>\n<p>Densities of fecal-col iform and fecal-streptococcal bacteria ranged from less than 1 colony per 100 milliliters to 26,000 colonies per 100 milliliters and 1 colony per 100 milliliters to 50,000 colonies per 100 milliliters, respectively. Fecal-coliform densities exceeded Environmental Protection Agency criteria for public water supply (2,000 colonies per 100 milliliters) at several stations during the study.</p>\n<p>Biochemical oxygen demand concentrations ranged from 0.00 to 34 milligrams per liter. Only one mean biochemical oxygen demand concentration exceeded 8 milligrams per liter, the upper range of concentration common in moderately contaminated streams.</p>\n<p>Trace elements and pesticides were detected in many samples throughout the basin. The concentration of dissolved solids of the salinewater at the salinity front is 1,000 milligrams per liter. The concentration of dissolved solids in water within the freshwater zone of the aquifer usually ranges from 250 to 350 milligrams per liter. A digital model was used to investigate the potential movement of the salinity front by simulating the transport of salinewater into the freshwater zone as a result of pumping from the freshwater zone.</p>\n<p>The model simulations indicate that a large range in the quantity of solute transported from the salinewater zone into the freshwater zone is possible. This uncertainty is caused by the range of estimates of transmissivity, the magnitude of water-level decline, and porosity. Simulated transmissivity values for the Edwards aquifer within the salinewater zone ranged from 134 to 3,340 feet squared per day and resulted in potential lateral shifts of the salinity front from 16 to 425 feet updip into the fresh-water zone at the end of a 10-year simulation. ,{"id":26709,"text":"wri864188 - 1986 - Assessment of ground-water contamination at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Michigan, 1982-85","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2016-09-16T16:09:39","indexId":"wri864188","displayToPublicDate":"1994-01-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"1986","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"seriesTitle":{"id":342,"text":"Water-Resources Investigations Report","code":"WRI","active":false,"publicationSubtype":{"id":5}},"seriesNumber":"86-4188","title":"Assessment of ground-water contamination at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Michigan, 1982-85","docAbstract":"<p>Continued study of ground-water contamination at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Michigan, defined the movement and distribution of volatile organic compounds in the glacial sand and gravel aquifer at known sites of contamination, and has defined new plumes at two other sites. </p><p>The Arrow Street purge system, installed in 1982 to remove contaminants from the Building 43 plume, has lowered concentrations of trichloroethylene in ground water in the central part of the most contaminated area from a range of 1,000 to 2,000 micrograms per liter to about 200 micrograms per liter. Trichloroethylene is not escaping off-Base from this area. </p><p>In the southern part of the Base a plume containing principally trichloroethylene and dichloroethylene has been delineated along Mission Drive. Maximum concentrations observed were 5,290 micrograms per liter of trichloroethylene and 1,480 micrograms per liter of dichloroethylene. Hydrologically suitable sites for purge wells are identified in the southern part of the plume using a new ground-water flow model of the Base. </p><p>A benzene plume near the bulk-fuel storage area, delineated in earlier work, lias shifted to a more northerly direction under influence of the Arrow Street purge system. Sites initially identified for purging the benzene plume have been repositioned because of the change in contaminant movement. JP-4 fuel was found to be accumulating in wells near the bulk-fuel storage area, largely in response to seasonal fluctuations in the water table. It is thought to originate from a spill that occurred several years ago. </p><p>A more thorough definition of contaminants in the northern landfill area has permitted a determination of the most hydrologically suitable sites for purge wells. In general, Concentrations found in water do not differ greatly from those observed in 1981. </p><p>Since 1981, concentrations of trichloroethylene have decreased significantly in the Alert Apron plume. Near the origin of the plume, the concentration of trichloroethylene has decreased from 1,000 micrograms per liter in 1980 to 50 micrograms per liter in 1984. Water from Van Etten Lake near the termination of the plume had only a trace of trichloroethylene at one site. </p><p>Benzene detected in water from well AF2 seems to originate near the former site of buried fuel tanks west of the operational apron. During periods of normal purge pumping along Arrow Street, contaminants are drawn to the purge system. The Waialae aquifer is separated from the ground water of Kaimuki to the west by Palolo valley fill and the Kaau rift zone, and from the Wailupe-Hawaii Kai aquifer to the east by a line of northeast-trending volcanic dikes. The distinct ground-water head changes across these boundaries indicate that the aquifers are separate, with little or no leakage between them.\r\n\r\nA water budget of leeward southeast Oahu determined the quantity and spatial distribution of ground-water recharge. These estimates of recharge, 6 million gallons per day over the Waialae area and 9.1 million gallons per day over the Wailupe-Hawaii Kai area, were used as input to a finite-element two-dimensional ground-water flow model. Ground-water heads were simulated in the modeled aquifer for several pumping scenarios. Projected pumpage from the recently drilled wells int he area is predicted to draw the water table down about one foot from its present mean position.\r\n\r\nThe existing ground-water development of 1.4 million gallons per day is small compared to the quantity of ground water that flows through the area and discharges to the sea. The purpose of the project was to prepare a report that would supplement a series of case studies to be made available to permit writers in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Four sites in the United States were chosen for their potential applicability to geologically similar sites. The Adams County, Colorado, site was chosen to be representative of sites in the Upper Cretaceous Pierre Shale. The intent of this report is to provide an example of how available earth-science information might be used in evaluating an application and not to evaluate the acceptability of the site. Because this study is an evaluation of a permit application, the data used are limited to the data supplied in the application and in published reports. Of the five criteria required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to be addressed in the permit application considered in the case study, the application was evaluated to be inadequate in addressing three criteria: (1) Site characterization, (2) ability to monitor the location, and (3) flow paths and 100-foot time of travel. Details of the inadequacies and a description of the information needed to eliminate the inadequacies are included in the report. This system can be used by any study where there is a need to store areal interpretive data that generally is presented in map form. This system provides the capability to grid areal interpretive data for input to groundwater flow models at any spacing and orientation. The data storage and retrieval system is designed to be used for studies that cover small areas such as counties. The system is built around a hierarchically structured data base consisting of related latitude-longitude blocks. The information in the data base can be stored at different levels of detail, with the finest detail being a block of 6 sec of latitude by 6 sec of longitude (approximately 0.01 sq mi). This system was implemented on a mainframe computer using a hierarchical data base management system. The computer programs are written in Fortran IV and PL/1. The design and capabilities of the data storage and retrieval system, and the computer programs that are used to implement the system are described. Supplemental sections contain the data dictionary, user documentation of the data-system software, changes that would need to be made to use this system for other studies, and information on the computer software tape.
