Several additional northern or western species appear irregularly as accidentals or during years of southward incursions. In the Southeast, the most common and wide- spread owls are the common barn-owl, eastern screech-owl, great horned owl and barred owl; the most restricted is the burrowing owl.  The long-eared, short-eared, and northern saw-whet owls are primarily winter visitors in this region, although small and very localized nesting populations of short-eared owls may occur in Virginia. Long-eared owls and northern saw-whet owls may occur in West Virginia and northern saw-whet owls may occur in the highlands of Tennessee and North Carolina. Several owls of the Southeast are Blue-listed as threatened, endangered, or of local concern, including the common barn-owl, eastern screech-owl, burrow'ing owl and short-eared owl. The nesting status of the long-eared owl and northern saw-whet owl are still poorly known. These two owls should be included on stat and regional lists of species of special concern. Important limiting factors for all owls of the Southeast include habitat loss and human related mortality. Management issues center on obtaining a data base useful in predicting the effects of current forest management practices on owl populations and encouraging use of forestry techniques that least impact owls. Research needs include initiating studies of all aspects of the life history and habitat relationships of each owl species.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the Southeast Raptor Management Symposium and Workshop. With this method, a population trend is estimated for each route in a region, then regional trends are estimated as a weighted mean of the individual route trends. This method can accurately incorporate data that is unbalanced by changes in years surveyed and observer differences. We suggest that route-regression methodology is most efficient in the estimation of long-term (>5 year) trends, and tends to provide conservative results for low-density species.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Survey Designs and Statistical Methods for the Estimation of Avian Population Trends","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":1,"text":"Federal Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","collaboration":"  PDF on file: see 3990_Sauer.pdf  9.5 MB","usgsCitation":"Geissler, P., and Sauer, J., 1990, Topics in route-regression analysis: Biological Report, v, 166.","productDescription":"v, 166","startPage":"54","endPage":"57","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200648,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b385","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Sauer, J.R. 0000-0002-4557-3019","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4557-3019","contributorId":66197,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sauer","given":"J.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506872,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Droege, Sam 0000-0003-4393-0403","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4393-0403","contributorId":64185,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Droege","given":"Sam","affiliations":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":506871,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Geissler, P.H.","contributorId":24038,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Geissler","given":"P.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328945,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sauer, J.R. 0000-0002-4557-3019","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4557-3019","contributorId":66197,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sauer","given":"J.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328946,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

As these surveys cannot be analyzed by modeling annual mean densities among routes within a region, no natural annual index of population density exists for the region. We discuss two possible methodologies for estimating annual indices of abundance. In the context of the route-regression methodology, in which trends are estimated for each route and regional population trends are estimated as weighted averages of route trends, it is possible to find average residual distances between the predicted trends on each route and the actual data points. Adding these average residuals to the regional predicted values provides a measure of average distance from the actual data points to the predicted trends. A linear model approach can also be used to estimate annual indices, in which a regional slope parameter can be fit to the data in combination with annual effects. Bootstrapping can be used to provide some measure of the variability of these annual effects. These methods provide similar results in an example using Breeding Bird Survey data for scissor-tailed flycatcher (Tyrannlls forficatus) trends in Arkansas and Oklahoma.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Survey Designs and Statistical Methods for the Estimation of Avian Population Trends","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":1,"text":"Federal Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","collaboration":"  PDF on file: see 3990_Sauer.pdf  9.5 MB","usgsCitation":"Sauer, J., and Geissler, P., 1990, Estimation of annual indices from roadside surveys: Biological Report, v, 166.","productDescription":"v, 166","startPage":"58","endPage":"62","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200668,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fbbcf","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Sauer, J.R. 0000-0002-4557-3019","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4557-3019","contributorId":66197,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sauer","given":"J.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506782,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Droege, Sam 0000-0003-4393-0403","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4393-0403","contributorId":64185,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Droege","given":"Sam","affiliations":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":506781,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Sauer, J.R. 0000-0002-4557-3019","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4557-3019","contributorId":66197,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sauer","given":"J.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328779,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Geissler, P.H.","contributorId":24038,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Geissler","given":"P.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":328778,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Wood ducks (Air sponsa) are difficult to survey using conventional waterfowl monitoring techniques, but a large portion of their range is surveyed by the BBS. Wood ducks are detected at low densities on many BBS routes, and population trends can be estimated for most regions. Populations have been increasing throughout North America since 1966, but statistically significant increases generally occurred only in the early (1966-78) part of the period. Roadside survey methodology used in the BBS has limitations that make it inefficient as a survey technique for wood ducks, and we recommend using modified methodologies that specifically survey wood duck habitat.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"The 1988 North American Wood Duck Symposium","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisherLocation":"St. Louis, MO","collaboration":"Published by the Symposium.","usgsCitation":"Sauer, J., and Droege, S., 1990, Wood duck population trends from the North American Breeding Bird Survey, chap. <i>of</i> The 1988 North American Wood Duck Symposium, p. 225-231.","productDescription":"xv, 390","startPage":"225","endPage":"231","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":200698,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db69816a","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Fredrickson, Leigh H.","contributorId":55874,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fredrickson","given":"Leigh","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506642,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Burger, George V.","contributorId":113575,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burger","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506645,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Havera, Stephen P.","contributorId":111761,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Havera","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506644,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Graber, David A.","contributorId":114127,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Graber","given":"David A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506646,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Kirby, Ronald E. ronald_kirby@usgs.gov","contributorId":195,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kirby","given":"Ronald","email":"ronald_kirby@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":506641,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Taylor, T. Eighty-seven juvenile female canvasbacks were radio-tracked between 30 December 1988 and 25 March 1989.  Diurnal time and energy budgets were constructed for a time of day-season matrix for canvasbacks using riverine and main bay habitats.  Canvasbacks were very active at night, making regular and often lengthy crepuscular movements (x = 11.7 km) from near shore habitats during the day to off shore habitats at night.  Movement patterns were similar for birds using habitats on the eastern and western shores of the Bay.  Canvasbacks had extensive home ranges averaging 14,286 ha, and used an average of 1.97 core areas.  Sleeping was the predominant diurnal behavior.  Telemetry indicated that canvasbacks actively fed at night.  Canvasbacks spent more time in active behaviors (e.g. swimming, alert) on the eastern shore than on the western shore.  Similarly, canvasbacks were more active during daytime hours at locations where artificial feeding occurred.  Behavioral patterns were only weakly correlated with weather patterns.  Canvasbacks appeared to reduce energy expenditure in mid-winter by reducing distances moved, reducing feeding activities and increasing the amount of time spent sleeping.  This pattern was observed even though 1988-89 mid-winter weather conditions were very mild.","language":"English","publisher":"Thesis (M.S.)--Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University","collaboration":"OCLC:  23657936. Therefore, any physical differences that can be found between laboratory samples that slide stably and those that show stick-slip motion may help to identify the cause of earthquakes. We have examined petrographically the run products of many triaxial friction experiments using clayey and quartzofeldspathic gouges, which comprise the principal types of natural fault gouge material. The examined samples were tested under a wide range of temperature, confining and fluid pressure, and velocity conditions.</span></p><p><span>The clayey and quartzofeldspathic gouges show some textural differences, owing to their different mineral contents and grain sizes and shapes. In the clayey gouges, for example, a clay mineral fabric and kink band sets are commonly developed, whereas in the quartzofeldspathic gouges fracturing and crushing of the predominately quartz and feldspar grains are important processes. For both types of gouge, however, and whatever the pressure-temperature-velocity conditions of the experiments, the transition from stable sliding to stick-slip motion is correlated with: (i) a change from pervasive deformation of the gouge layer to localized slip in subsidiary shears; and (ii) an increase in the angle betweem the shears that crosscut the gouge layer (Riedel shears) and ones that form along the gouge-rock cylinder boundaries (boundary shears). This suggests that the localization of shear within a fault zone combined with relatively high Riedel-shear angles are somehow connected with earthquakes.</span></p><p><span>Secondary fracture sets similar to Riedel shears have been identified at various scales in major strike-slip faults such as the San Andreas of the western United States (Wallace, 1973) and the Luhuo and Fuyun earthquake faults of China (Deng and Zhang, 1984; Deng&nbsp;<i>et al.</i>, 1986). The San Andreas also contains locked and creeping sections that correspond to the stick-slip and stably sliding experimental samples, respectively. We plan to study the physical structure of the San Andreas fault, to see if the experimentally observed differences related to sliding behavior can also be distinguished in the field.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0079-1946(89)90002-5","issn":"00791946","usgsCitation":"Moore, D., and Byerlee, J., 1990, Textural development of clayey and quartzofeldspathic fault gouges relative to their sliding behavior: Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, v. 17, p. 1-9, https://doi.org/10.1016/0079-1946(89)90002-5.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"9","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222870,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"17","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505ba600e4b08c986b320e06","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, Diane E. 0000-0002-8641-1075","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8641-1075","contributorId":106496,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Diane E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":372012,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Byerlee, J.D.","contributorId":69982,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Byerlee","given":"J.D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":372011,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
