In 1938, as in previous years, the Committee devoted its energies primarily to the collecting of data on the variations in length and volume of American glaciers, it being felt that the maintenance of a continuous record of these variations is of prime importance, not only to hydrology and glaciology, but, as has become increasingly evident recently, also to climatology, geomorphology, geography, ecology, history, and archaeology. As the time available for the work of the Committee is limited and does not permit covering the entire field of glaciology, it seems best to devote it before all else to this line of research which yields results of value to so many different sciences. Besides, the gathering of data on glacier‐oscillations is not a one‐man job that can be taken up or dropped at convenience from time to time, but is an organized and far‐flung enterprise whose success depends upon the faithful cooperation of many volunteer workers located in different parts of the country. Such an enterprise, once launched, must be kept running or it will disintegrate and the precious enthusiasm of the field‐workers will be lost.

B. Ward from cysts found in the body musculature of a silver salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch Walbaum) taken from the Stickeen River in southeastern Alaska. Ward described the cysts as “pyriform, fairly uniform in size, and hard to the touch. . . . The cysts measured 3 to 6 mm in diameter and were found everywhere through the muscle mass.”
\nZschokke and Heitz (1914) had previously encountered cysts measuring 3 to 5 mm in a silver salmon during a parasitological survey of salmonid fishes of the Kamchatka peninsula. Myxosporidian spores within the cysts were identified by these workers as those of Henneguya aschokkei Gurley, although they gave no details as to the spores found and it seems quite probable that Kudo (1920) was correct in his assumption that these spores belonged to the same species which was later described by Ward as H. salminicola.

The compilation of a lexicon of geologic names was suggested to the compiler more than 25 years ago, by Dr. T. W. Stanton, who served as chairman of the Committee on Geologic Names from 1912 to January 1931, when he became Acting Chief Geologist of the United States Geological Survey, and later served as Chief Geologist until his retirement September 30, 1935. Dr. Stanton suggested that the definitions should state, briefly, the lithology, thickness, age, underlying and overlying formations, and type locality and the formal definitions herein given have been compiled in accordance with that suggestion.

Gold was panned from some of the better looking material.Near Sandy Cove, 30 miles away, more irregular, but locally thicker, veins appear to carry only pyrite. Here pyrite also occurs along the contact between the granitic rocks and the intruded limestone.Sparse ore minerals have been seen at other places in and near the monument. As yet, no large mineral deposits have been found there, but many miles of igneous contacts have not been prospected. In southeastern Alaska, as elsewhere, such contacts are considered favorable places in which to search for mineral deposits.
