The study area is a 370,000 sq mi area that includes all of Kansas and Nebraska and parts of Arkansas, Colorado, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The broad objective for each Regional Aquifer-System analysis (RASA) study is to assemble geologic, hydrologic, and geochemical information; to analyze and develop an understanding of the hydrogeologic system; and to develop predictive capabilities that will contribute to effective management of groundwater resources. The Central Midwest RASA project includes the study of the major regional aquifers that occur in the stratigraphic interval between the Precambrian surface and the top of the Great Plains aquifer system. The Dakota aquifer system in Nebraska, which is the equivalent of the Great Plains aquifer system, can best be defined as those sandstones and shales occurring in the stratigraphic interval between the base of the Cretaceous system and the top of the first major sandstone bed below the Cretaceous Greenhorn Limestone. This aquifer systems underlies approximately 94 percent of the State. Distribution of data sites is not uniform across the State. Although the aquifer systems underlies all or parts of 88 of Nebraska 's 93 counties, hydrogeologic data on the Dakota are available only for 83 counties. Individual data sites were selected on the basis of the completeness and representativeness of data for the site and to provide an adequate areal distribution of data needed to describe the hydrogeology of the aquifer system. Four tables are used to summarize hydrogeologic data. A basic requirement for such analysis is information about the volumes and distributions of snow and ice on other volcanoes.\r\n\r\nA radar unit contained in a backpack was used to make point measurements of ice thickness on major glaciers of Mount Rainier, Wash.; Mount Hood, Oreg.; the Three Sisters, Oreg.; and Mount Shasta, Calif. The measurements were corrected for slope and were used to develop subglacial contour maps from which glacier volumes were measured.\r\n\r\nThese values were used to develop estimation methods for finding volumes of unmeasured glaciers. These methods require a knowledge of glacier slope, altitude, and area and require an estimation of basal shear stress, each estimate derived by using topographic maps updated by aerial photographs. The estimation methods were found to be accurate within ?20 percent on measured glaciers and to be within ?25 percent when applied to unmeasured glaciers on the Cascade volcanoes. The estimation methods may be applicable to other temperate glaciers in similar climatic settings.\r\n\r\nAreas and volumes of snow and ice are as follows: Mount Rainier, 991 million ft2, 156 billion ft3; Mount Hood, 145 million ft2, 12 billion ft3; Three Sisters, 89 million ft2, 6 billion ft3; and Mount Shasta, 74 million ft2, 5 billion ft3.\r\n\r\nThe distribution of ice and firn patches within 58 glacierized basins on volcanoes is mapped and listed by altitude and by watershed to facilitate water-hazard analysis.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1365","usgsCitation":"Driedger, C.L., and Kennard, P.M., 1986, Ice volumes on Cascade Volcanoes: Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, Three Sisters, and Mount Shasta: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1365, Report: vi, 28 p.; 6 Plates: 12.50 x 26.50 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1365.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 28 p.; 6 Plates: 12.50 x 26.50 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":494410,"rank":13,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4819.htm","text":"Mount Shasta","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":494409,"rank":12,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4818.htm","text":"Three Sisters","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":65288,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1365/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":65287,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1365/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":65286,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1365/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":65285,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1365/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":65284,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1365/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":494407,"rank":10,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4816.htm","text":"Mount Rainier","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":494408,"rank":11,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4817.htm","text":"Mount Hood","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":65283,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1365/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":12500,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/geology/publications/pp/1365/index.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":65289,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1365/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":122545,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1365/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Oregon, Washington","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.98982014011878,\n              39.93395834106278\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.49831019936644,\n              39.93395834106278\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.49831019936644,\n              47.1145890021225\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.98982014011878,\n              47.1145890021225\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.98982014011878,\n              39.93395834106278\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb7dc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Driedger, Carolyn L. 0000-0002-4011-4112 driedger@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4011-4112","contributorId":537,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Driedger","given":"Carolyn","email":"driedger@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":219999,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kennard, Paul M.","contributorId":51827,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kennard","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":220000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Leachate, indicated by the conservative ion thiocyanate, has been observed 1/2 mi downgradient from the retort. The contaminated aquifer is part of the Green River Formation and consists of thin, permeable layers of tuff and sandstone interbedded with oil shale. Most solute migration has occurred in an 8-ft sandstone at the top of the aquifer. Groundwater flow in the study area is complexly 3-D and is characterized by large vertical variations in hydraulic head. The solute transport model was used to predict the concentration of thiocyanate at a point where groundwater discharges to the land surface. Leachates with peak concentrations of thiocyanate--45 mg/L or approximately one-half the initial concentration of retort water--were estimated to reach the discharge area during January 1985. Advantages as well as the problems of site specific studies are described. Data such as the distribution of thin permeable beds or fractures may introduce an unmanageable degree of complexity to basin-wide studies but can be incorporated readily in site specific models. Solute migration in the study area primarily occurs in thin permeable beds rather than in oil shale strata. Because of this behavior, leachate traveled far greater distances than might otherwise have been expected. The detail possible in site specific models permits more accurate prediction of solute transport than is possible with basin-wide models. A major problem in site specific studies is identifying model boundaries that permit the accurate estimation of aquifer properties. If the quantity of water flowing through a study area cannot be determined prior to modeling, the hydraulic conductivity and groundwater velocity will be estimated poorly. Segments from selected depths below the sediment surface have been analyzed for a variety of constituents, including lead-210, trace metals, nutrients, and particle size. The core sites were positioned throughout the hydrologic divisions and geomorphic units of the tidal Potomac system and in water depths ranging from 1 to 30 cm. Cores collected by divers were mostly for historical deposition-rate computations. Vibra cores, as much as 12 m long, were collected primarily to provide data on long-term (pre-historical) sedimentation rates and conditions. Benthos cores were used to provide samples rapidly in locations where divers were not available. Alpha counting methods were used to determine the polonium-210 radioactivity and secular equilibrium was assumed between lead-210 and polonium-210. The alpha decay of polonium-210 provides a measure of the lead-210 radioactivity of the lead-210 produced by in-situ decay of radium-226 in the sediment column (background lead-210) and the lead-210 from external sources (unsupported lead-210). Only the unsupported lead-210 was used in computations of the deposition rate. The count error is based on the counting statistics alone and varies from 3 to 5% of the total number of counts. The background level of lead-210 in tidal Potomac system sediment cores usually is based on in-situ measurements of total lead-210 at depths below which no unsupported lead-210 is believed to be present, and the lead-210 concentrations are relatively constant. A reconnaissance study of the area was conducted to identify water resources of the coal tract and to determine general effects that underground mining could have on the water resources. Surface-water resources consist of Elbow Creek, a small perennial stream that drains most of the area, plus irrigation water diverted into the basin from Rock Creek and the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River. Groundwater resources consist of sandstone aquifers in several formations of Late Cretaceous age and alluvial aquifers of Pleistocene and Holocene age. Chemical analyses were made of water in Elbow Creek and water from seven wells in the area. Water from Elbow Creek is suitable for use by all livestock, based on the concentration of dissolved solids. Water from most sampled wells had dissolved-solids concentrations larger than the maximum (500 milligrams/L) recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public water supply. Effects of underground mining on water resources would be minimal. The Bridger coal bed in the Upper Cretaceous Eagle Sandstone has no significant hydraulic connection with Elbow Creek in most of the area and the Bridger coal bed does not appear to be a significant aquifer. Mining and dewatering of the coal could temporarily lower water levels in aquifers overlying the coal if mining causes subsidence and fracturing of rocks above the mine workings. However, an aquifer may be exempted from protection and used for injected wastes where the aquifer meets criteria established in the EPA 's Underground Injection Control program. The Knox Group in Middle and West Tennessee occurs primarily in the subsurface, and the top of the Knox Group ranges from about 350 to 3,000 feet below land surface. The upper part of the Knox Group (upper Knox aquifer) is an important source of drinking water in parts of the Central Basin and the Highland Rim provinces. The lower part of the Knox Group is currently being used for injected wastes at New Johnsonville on the western Highland Rim and at Mount Pleasant in the Central Basin. Runoff to the lake, mainly runoff from melting snow and glacier ice, filled the lake to an elevation of 83 feet above sea level by October 8, when the ice dam failed. The lake level rose at an average rate of 0.6 ft/day, and average daily inflow to the lake was calculated to be 16,500 cu ft/sec. After failure of the ice dam, the water level fell to the former high tide level of Russell Fiord within 24 hours. Average discharge through the breach in the ice dam during a 4-hr period of maximum water level decline is estimated to have been 3.8 million cu ft/sec. The formation and breakout of the lake is expected to be repeated as the Hubbard Glacier continues to advance, though the timing of the phenomenon cannot be predicted with certainty.
