These activities included monitoring groundwater levels; compiling and entering geohydrologic data into the U.S. Geological Survey computerized groundwater database; providing technical support to the Radionuclide Migration Committee and the Containment Evaluation Panel; and the planning, drilling, and sampling of the UE20n-1 hole. Groundwater levels were monitored continuously at 2 wells and intermittently at 36 selected wells, test holes, and emplacement holes. Selected monthly water-level measurements are listed for the continuously monitored wells and intermittent measurements are listed for the selected wells, test holes, and emplacement holes. Progress continued on four groundwater hydrology reports of the Nevada Test Site area. Leachate from the landfill does not appear to be contaminating a small creek flowing through a conduit in the landfill, but leachate is being transported by groundwater into a wetlands to the south. An electromagnetic survey of the unconfined aquifer and subsequent sampling from wells indicate that minor amounts of contaminants have reached much of the wetlands as far as Chester Creek, about 2,200 ft to the south. However, concentrations of these contaminants in the groundwater are generally less than U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards for drinking water except within the landfill itself. The off-site migration of these compounds has not been studied; however, a nearby public-supply well is contaminated, and a public-supply well 1,400 ft downgradient from the site may be threatened. The study area, in the New Jersey part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, is underlain by alluvial deposits composed of gravel, sand, silt, and clay. These deposits comprise the water table aquifer, the confining units, and the confined aquifer throughout the study area. The water table beneath the Swope Oil Superfund site is approximately 17 ft below sea level and groundwater levels throughout the study area are below the stage of the Delaware River. The aquifer system is recharged by precipitation, leakage of water through confining units, and the water induced from the Delaware River. Five public supply-well fields, primarily adjacent to the Delaware River, and four waste disposal sites with observation well networks are located in the study area. Both the water table and confined aquifers are contaminated in several locations. The concentration of metals and/or purgeable organic compounds in more than 20 wells exceeds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency primary drinking-water standard and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection recommended drinking water criteria. Selected data from wells and test borings are presented, including well construction details; drillers ', geologists ', and geophysical logs; water levels; specific-capacity and slug test data; and chemical analysis of groundwater samples.
