Significant water-yielding units within the upper White River basin include the Eminence and Potosi Dolomites, the Roubidou Formation, the Gasconade Dolomite and the Van Buren Formation, outcrops of undifferentiated Paleozoic rocks, the Nacatoch Sand, and quaternary deposits. Water in the Quaternary deposits is the most heavily used, but areally, other units are significant sources of groundwater for domestic and rural use. The quality of groundwater withdrawn from the various units generally is suitable for most uses, although groundwater in the study area is typically very hard. Iron concentrations commonly exceed allowable limits. Yields from the different water-yielding units are highly variable. The Eminence and Potosi Dolomites are known to yield as much as 230 gal/min. Nearer the surface, the Gunter Sandstone Member of the Van Buren Formation yields as much as 500 gal/min. Above the Gunter Sandstone, the Roubidoux Formation yields as much as 450 gal/min to wells. In contrast to the high yields from these deeper units , the outcrops of Paleozoic rocks commonly yield less than 10 gal/min. The Quaternary deposits yield as much as 2,500 gal/min of very hard water. Elevated nitrate concentrations that exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency primary drinking-water standards occur in Marion County. In addition, saline water is present in the Quaternary deposits near Bald Knob and Cord, Arkansas. This effort was part of a comprehensive investigation of Green Bay funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Great Lakes National Program Office.</p>\n<p>The U.S. Geological Survey sampled the bottom sediments and water columns of 11 streams tributary to western Green Bay for polychlorinated biphenyls, lead, and cadmium. Four of these streams also were sampled for dieldrin, a pesticide previously used in the watershed. An additional 11 streams tributary to eastern Green Bay were sampled for dieldrin in the bottom sediment and storm runoff. Samples were collected from July 1987 through April 1988.</p>\n<p>Neither dieldrin nor cadmium was detected in any of the sampled tributaries. Detectable concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls and lead were found at only three sites. Polychorinated biphenyls (0.10 microgram per gram) and lead (10 milligrams per kilogram) were found in the bottom sediment of Duck Creek, a western-shore tributary near the city of Green Bay. Lead (10 milligrams per kilogram) also was found in the bottom sediment of the Suamico River near the mouth, about 5 miles north of Duck Creek. Thirty-six of the wells obtain water from the Snake River Plain aquifer and were equipped with dedicated or portable pumps. Water samples from one well that obtains water from the aquifer and one that obtains water from a perched groundwater zone were collected using a thief sampler. Analyses of water from 22 wells indicated the aquifer locally contained detectable concentrations of at least 1 of 19 purgeable organic compounds,  mainly carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and trichloroethylene. Except for five wells, the maximum concentration of a specific compound in groundwater was 6.4 microgram/L or less; concentrations of most compounds were less than 0.2 microgram/L. Water from four wells at and near the Test Area North contained from 44 to 29, 000 micrograms/L of trichloroethylene. Water from a well that obtains water from a discontinuous perched groundwater zone at the Radioactive Waste Management Complex contained 1,400 micrograms/L of carbon tetrachloride, 940 micrograms/L of chloroform, 250 micrograms/L of 1,1,1- trichloroethane, and 1,100 micrograms/L trichloroethylene. Selected purgeable organic compounds, such as total xylene and methylene chloride, were detected in some groundwater samples and some blank samples consisting of boiled deionized water. Their presence in the blank samples suggest the compounds could have been inadvertently introduced into the groundwater sampled during or subsequent to collection.
