Background information that pertains to published components of the Silver City Folio is also available (Richter and others, in press).&nbsp;</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1183I","usgsCitation":"Watts, K., Hassemer, J.R., Forn, C.L., and Siems, D.F., 1986, Geochemical maps showing distribution and abundance of tin in two fractions of stream-sediment concentrates, Silver City 1 degree by 2 degrees Quadrangle, New Mexico and Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1183, 46.53 x 39.75 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1183I.","productDescription":"46.53 x 39.75 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":182533,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1183I.PNG"},{"id":326988,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1183-I/plate-1.pdf"}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Arizona, New Mexico","city":"Silver City","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -110,32 ], [ -110,33 ], [ -108,33 ], [ -108,32 ], [ -110,32 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6adfbc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Watts, Kenneth C.","contributorId":101180,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Watts","given":"Kenneth C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":258967,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hassemer, Jerry R.","contributorId":173451,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hassemer","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":258965,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Forn, Carl L.","contributorId":173452,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Forn","given":"Carl","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":258966,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Siems, David F.","contributorId":100835,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Siems","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":258968,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

These efforts have improved our knowledge of the geologic history, general tectonic setting, and patterns of modern seismicity (see McKeown and Pakiser, 1982) in the New Madrid seismic zone. Identifying and characterizing the specific structures that may be responsible for the seismicity is the focus of continuing research. Unfortunately, these structures are buried by the veneer of poorly consolidated Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments that overlie competent rocks in the embayment. In such a geologic setting, seismic-reflection profiling is one of the most valuable techniques available to obtain useful information on the distribution of faults, and on the local and regional structure.</p>\n<p>Three major seismic-reflection programs have been conducted by the USGS in the New Madrid seismic zone. The first program consisted of 32 km of conventional Vibroseis profiling designed to investigate the subsurface structure associated with scarps and lineaments in northwestern Tennessee (Zoback, 1979). A second, more extensive Vibroseis program collected about 250 km of data from all parts of the New Madrid seismic zone in Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee (Hamilton and Zoback, 1979, 1982; Zoback and others, 1980). The profiles presented here are part of the third program that collected about 240 km of high-resolution seismic-reflection data from a boat along the Mississippi River between Osceola, Ark., and Wickliffe, Ky. (fig. 1). The data for profiles A, B, C, and D were collected between river miles 839-1/2 and 850-1/2 from near the Interstate-155 bridge to upstream of Caruthersville, Mo. (fig. 2). Profiles on this part of the river are important for three reasons: (1) they connect many of the land-based profiles on either side of the river, (2) they are near the northeast termination of a linear, 120km-long, northeast-southwest zone of seismicity that extends from northeast Arkansas to Caruthersville, Mo. (Stauder, 1982; fig. 1), and (3) they cross the southwesterly projection of the Cottonwood Grove fault (fig. 1), a fault having a substantial amount of vertical Cenozoic offset (Zoback and others, 1980).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1863","isbn":"0607817208","usgsCitation":"Crone, A.J., Harding, S., Russ, D.P., and Shedlock, K.M., 1986, Seismic-reflection profiles of the New Madrid seismic zone-data along the Mississippi River near Caruthersville, Missouri: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1863, 4 Plates: 40.82 x 57.37 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1863.","productDescription":"4 Plates: 40.82 x 57.37 inches or smaller","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326124,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1863.JPG"},{"id":327013,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1863/plate-2.pdf"},{"id":327012,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1863/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":327014,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1863/plate-3.pdf"},{"id":327015,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1863/plate-4.pdf"}],"scale":"90000","country":"United States","state":"Missouri","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -89.73333333333333,36.084722222222226 ], [ -89.73333333333333,36.25 ], [ -89.56805555555555,36.25 ], [ -89.56805555555555,36.084722222222226 ], [ -89.73333333333333,36.084722222222226 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65e0df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crone, A. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management requested mineral surveys of about 11,921 acres of the approximately 15,000 acre wilderness study area. In this report \"wilderness study area\" refers to the 11,921 acres that were studied. The Dos Cabezas Mountains are in many ways a typical mountain range of the Basin-and-Range physiographic province. They are a northwest-trending block-faulted range separated from adjacent ranges by broad valleys. The range is about 22 mi long and 8 mi wide, and it reaches an elevation of 8,354 ft at Dos Cabezas Peaks, located about 2 mi west of the study area. The terrain of the area is rugged. Roadheads and trails provide adequate access for foot traverses.</p>\n<p>In the Dos Cabezas Mountains the Apache Pass fault zone is the major structural feature, barely skirting the southwest side of the study area. It extends several miles to the northwest and tens of miles to the southeast, across the Chiricahua Mountains beyond Apache Pass. It is typically made up of a pair of bounding faults and some anastomosing faults between them. The study area is underlain by a variety of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks that provide only a fragmentary record of geologic events between Precambrian and Holocene times. A suite of metamorphic and igneous (primarily crystalline) rocks forms the basement terrain. Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and also Paleozoic and Mesozoic volcanic rocks overlie the basement rocks but are extensively eroded away and may be covered. A pile of volcanic rocks of Late Cretaceous and Paleocene age caps the older rocks in much of the study area. Mid-Tertiary intrusive rocks underlie the eastern part of the study area as well as some very small, widely scattered additional localities. Quaternary gravel deposits occur in the major valleys and along the mountain front.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1873A","isbn":"0607817305","usgsCitation":"Abrams, G.A., 1986, Geophysical maps of the Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness Study Area, Cochise County, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1873, Plate: 56.51 x 32.09 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1873A.","productDescription":"Plate: 56.51 x 32.09 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326122,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1873A.JPG"},{"id":327134,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1873-A/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Cochise County","otherGeospatial":"Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness Study Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.58333333333333,32.16777777777777 ], [ -109.58333333333333,32.28333333333333 ], [ -109.45111111111112,32.28333333333333 ], [ -109.45111111111112,32.16777777777777 ], [ -109.58333333333333,32.16777777777777 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8574","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Abrams, G. Other publications in this folio discuss the geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and mineral assessment of the&nbsp;Medford 1<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;x 2<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;quadrangle and are listed in the references at the end of this report.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The distinctive magnetic properties of the major rock types of the&nbsp;Medford 1<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;x 2<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;quadrangle over produce explicit magnetic anomalies. For example, contacts between magnetic ophiolitic rocks with nonmagnetic sedimentary rocks cause abrupt aeromagnetic boundaries even though these contacts may be buried at some depth below the topographic surface. Careful study of the aeromagnetic data, therefore, can provide insights about the geology and the mineral resource potential below the mapped surface. For example, aeromagnetic data may indicate the presence of an ultramafic body at shallow depth that is connected to an ultramafic outcrop with known chromite deposits.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geologic Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1383B","usgsCitation":"Blakely, R.J., 1986, Maps showing aeromagnetic data and interpretation of the Medford 1 degree by 2 degrees Quadrangle, Oregon-California: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1383, 43.65 x 29.74 inches and 40.45 x 28.17 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1383B.","productDescription":"43.65 x 29.74 inches and 40.45 x 28.17 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":183052,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1383B.PNG"},{"id":327155,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1383-B/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327156,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1383-B/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Oregon","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -124,42 ], [ -124,43 ], [ -122,43 ], [ -122,42 ], [ -124,42 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a17e4b07f02db604512","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blakely, Richard J. 0000-0003-1701-5236 blakely@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1701-5236","contributorId":1540,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blakely","given":"Richard","email":"blakely@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":662,"text":"Western Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":261184,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Regionally, the wilderness area lies on a strong gravity gradient that marks the northwest side of the deepest gravity low in the central United States (Behrendt and Bajwa, 1974). This low (fig. 1) reflects a series of Laramide and younger granitic intrusive bodies which are probably related genetically to the Colorado mineral belt (Tweto and Sims, 1963; Behrendt and others, 1968).</p>\n<p>The wilderness area lies on a structural dome, on which Proterozoic basement rocks have been uplifted, exhumed, and sculpted by glacial and fluvial erosional processes into spectacular alpine ridges. Steep faults bound the western edge of the dome; west of these domal border faults lies a sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary strata, which dip gently and thicken to the west. The dome is marked by an oval regional gravity high (Webring, written commun., 1985) whose shape suggests that maximum domal uplift may have occurred along or just to the east of the domal border fault complex. For more extensive descriptions of the regional geologic setting and mineral deposits of central Colorado, see Tweto (1968).</p>\n<p>Map B is a generalized bedrock geologic map of the wilderness area, showing locations of faults, shear zones, and geologic units referred to in this report. Many smaller outcrops are not shown on Map B, however.
