Resource-management agencies in this locality have recommended conservation tillage or \"no-tillage\" as a best management practices to control soil erosion. The pesticide aldicarb was selected for this study because it is both highly mobile and extremely toxic. Horizontal movement of aldicarb and its metabolites was negligible. Vertical movement of aldicarb and its metabolites was limited to the top 2.5 feet of soil. Most of the aldicarb residue (over 85 percent) remaining in the soil after 148 days was detected in the top 0.5 foot of soil. No significant differences in the movement or degradation of aldicarb and its metabolites were observed between the no-tilled and conventionally tilled fields. No-till practices did not increase the downward movement of aldicarb in the test areas. No-tillage has proven to be an effective best management practice for soil-loss reduction in many studies throughout the United States.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological This report presents available well-construction, hydrogeologic, and ground-water-quality data compiled into a geographic information system (GIS) data base for this study. General instructions on manipulation and suggested applications of the GIS data base are included. Three plates show the location and type of wells and distribution of ground-water-quality data within the study area. The data are intended to aid investigators in present and possible future hydrogeologic studies in the vicinity of Belvidere.\nThe data base contains information for 725 water-supply and monitoring wells and lithologic borings. The sources of the data and methodology utilized to develop the data base are discussed. Well-construction and hydrogeologic data include well-identification label, latitude and longitude of the well locations, type of well, aquifer to which the well is open, total depth of the well, depth to water in the well, the screened or open interval, and owner information. Water-quality data are tabulated for concentrations of selected volatile organic compounds (VOC's) and semivolatile organic compounds, inorganic compounds, and total pesticide, and specific conductance. Data are provided on a floppy diskette accompanying the report.\n\nAbout 78 percent of the wells in the data base are water-supply wells, including eight municipal water-supply wells. About 40 percent of the wells are open to the glacial drift aquifer, and 53 percent are open to the Galena-Platteville aquifer. The remaining wells are open to multiple-bedrock aquifers. Of the 157 wells and borings with available water-quality data, 59 percent are open to the glacial drift aquifer, 24 percent are open to the Galena-Platteville aquifer, and 17 percent are open to multiple-bedrock aquifers. VOC's have been detected in six municipal and three domestic wells. Of these volcanoes, AVO has a real time, continuously recording seismic network only at Iliamna, which is located in the Cook Inlet area of south-central Alaska (fig. 1). AVO has dial-up access to seismic data from a 5-station network in the general region of the Katmai group of volcanoes. The remaining unmonitored volcanoes are located in sparsely populated areas of the Wrangell Mountains, the Alaska Peninsula, and the Aleutian Islands (fig. 1). Ground- water withdrawals were estimated to average 269 million gallons per day (Mgal/d), or 38 percent of the total public-supply water use. This volume represents an increase of 34 percent in the use of ground water for public supply since 1980 when public-supply withdrawals were 200 Mgal/d. About 212 Mgal/d (79 percent) were withdrawn from the Tertiary sand and Cretaceous sand aquifers in western Tennessee. The largest ground-water with- drawals for public-supply occurred in Shelby County (154 Mgal/d or 57 percent of the total withdrawals for public supply). Thirty-four of the 267 principal public water-supply systems withdrew 1 Mgal/d or more and accounted for 83 percent of ground water withdrawn for public supply.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S.
