Seventeen wells and 3 springs were sampled in Hickman County, and 20 wells were sampled in Maury County. Samples from each site were analyzed for radionuclides, common and trace inorganic ions, indicators of redox conditions, selected nutrients, total organic carbon, and selected physical characteristics. Well-construction data were obtained to help determine the source of the water. Where possible, groundwater level measurements were made for each well sampled. Samples were collected from May 1989 through mid-August 1989. Data are presented in tables. Maps of each county show the location of the sites sampled. Mean monthly streamflows during the study period generally were lower than the corresponding long-term monthly averages yet representative of flows that typically enter the estuary. The influence of pumpage from individual well fields in or near the basin on streamflow was not statistically significant; the influence of total well-field pumpage, however, was significant at the 5% level. The upstream daily location of 0.44-, 5.0-, 10-, and 18-parts-per-thousand (ppt) salinity was quantified using multiple regression techniques. Streamflow used in the analysis ranged from 2.3 to 263 cu ft/sec, and high tides ranged from 0.25 ft below to 2.76 ft above sea level. Vertical salinity profiles indicated partially to well-mixed conditions throughout the estuary during the study period. Results of the regression analyses show that streamflow has a large effect on the location of the saltwater- freshwater interface (defined as 0.44 ppt salinity) as well as water having a salinity of 5.0 ppt. The location of water having salinities greater than 5.0 ppt is affected increasingly by tide, with a corresponding decrease in effect by streamflow. Results of proximate and ultimate analyses, reported on an as received basis, indicate that coal beds have an average ash yield of 24.23 percent, average sulfur content of 5.32 percent, average pyritic sulfur content of 4.07 percent, and average calorific value of 8943 Btu (4972 kcal/kg). Thirty five coal samples, analyzed on a whole coal, dry basis for selected trace elements and oxides, have anomalously high average concentrations of Ti, at O.3&amp; percent; Zr, at 382 ppm; and Se, at 11.4 ppm, compared to world wide averages for these elements in coal.</p><p>Some positive correlation coefficients, significant at a 0.01 level, are those between total sulfur and As, pyritic sulfur and As, total sulfur and sample location, organic sulfur and Se,&nbsp;calorific value (Btu) and sample location, and coal bed thickness and Se. Calorific values -for the samples, calculated on a moist, mineral matter free basis, indicate that the apparent rank of the coal is high volatile C bituminous.</p><p>Variations observed in the chemical and physical characteristics of the coal beds may be related to depositional environments. Total ash yields and concentrations of Se and organic sulfur increase toward more landward depositional environments and may be related to an increase of fluvial influence on peat deposition. Variations in pyritic sulfur concentrations may be related to post-peat pyrite filled burrows commonly observed in the upper part of the coal bed. The thickest coal beds that have the lowest ash content, and highest calorific values, formed from peats deposited in back barrier, tidal flat environments of the central and western parts of the coal field. During this period, 6 to 12 inches of rain fell in a 100-mile wide belt extending roughly from Texarkana to West Memphis, Arkansas. The intense rainfall produced flooding throughout much of central and eastern Arkansas. Peak discharges associated with the flood had recurrence intervals of 100 years at two gaging stations. Peak stages, discharges, and recurrence intervals for this flood are documented profiles for 41 gaging stations. Also included in this report are flood profiles for Bayou Meto, Bayou Two Prairie, Cache River, L'Anguille River, and flood hydrographs for gaging stations on Bayou Meto near Lonoke and Cache River at Patterson. The study area is 11.3 kilometers southeast of Oakes, N.Dak. Three runoff plots were established. Snow depth, runoff, sou water content, and soil temperature data were collected for each runoff plot. Precipitation, snow density, air temperature, radiation, and ground-water level data also were collected in the study area.
