This report details characteristics and processes that commonly determine the most acceptable approaches to hydrologic monitoring in the arid and semiarid central-western United States. No single approach is best for all hydrologic systems; consideration of basin characteristics, regulatory requirements, and regional patterns in hydrologic systems is necessary in any well-designed monitoring program for hydrologic-impact assessment. This report describes processes and characteristics that control the surface and subsurface hydraulics, as well as the water quality, of typical hydrological systems being mined in the central-western United States. After a discussion of these processes and characteristics, three examples are presented that describe acceptable, but nonexclusive, approaches to hydrologic monitoring network design. These maps contribute to the assessment of mineral resources within Silver City&nbsp;1<sup>o</sup>&nbsp;x 2<sup>o&nbsp;</sup>quadrangle by (1) showing regional patterns of elements enriched in heavy-mineral concentrates, thereby providing clues to regional patterns of mineralization; (2) showing new areas containing enriched metals, not previously known from mining activity; and (3) providing supportive data to the interpretive and summary maps (Watts and Hassmer, 1986) and the mineral resource assessment (Richter and others, 1983). Geochemical maps showing the distribution and abundance of 10 other selected key elements and the mineral fluorite in the Silver City quadrangle are also part of this folio (Watts and Hassemer, 1980; Watts and others 1986a-i). These maps contribute to the assessment of mineral resources within Silver City&nbsp;1</span><sup><span><span>o</span></span></sup><span>&nbsp;x 2</span><span><sup><span>o</span></sup>&nbsp;</span><span>quadrangle by (1) showing regional patterns of elements enriched in heavy-mineral concentrates, thereby providing clues to regional patterns of mineralization; (2) showing new areas containing enriched metals, not previously known from mining activity; and (3) providing supportive data to the interpretive and summary maps (Watts and Hassmer, 1986) and the mineral resource assessment (Richter and others, 1983). The purpose of the data collection was to determine the water quality of Arvada Reservoir, evaluate the effect of source waters on the reservoir , and determine the trophic state of the reservoir. Data collected include reservoir profile measurements with depth and inflow measurements of water temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and pH. Secchi disk depth measurements also are reported. In addition, water samples were analyzed periodically for concentrations of major chemical constituents, nutrients, trace elements, and selected radiochemicals; for densities and relative abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton; and for concentrations of chlorophyll alpha. Results of algal growth potential determinations are included. This report describes sampling site locations and methods of data collection and analyses and presents qualitative and quantitative results of water quality data collected during the study. Sampling began during June 1983 and continued through September 1985. The irrigation data include well yields, time of operation, fuel consumption, and water applied to individual crops for the 1983 and 1984 growing seasons. The area is at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada, approximately 30 miles east-northeast of Bakersfield, and 2.5 miles and 3.5 miles south-southeast of the communities of Bodfish and Lake Isabella, respectively (index map). Geochemical sampling was conducted during 1980 and 1981. This report summarizes the results of that investigation and provides details of the geochemical evaluation used in the final mineral resource assessment of the study area (Kennedy and others, 1983).</p>\n<p>Map A shows the locations of all sites sampled for this report and the distributions of anomalous concentrations of 4 elements in 33 samples of rock, 5 elements in 34 samples of minus-60-mesh stream sediment, and 11 elements in 33 samples of nonmagnetic heavy-mineral concentrate derived from stream sediment.
