As part of our studies, translation of a Russian manual on the CHIM methodology and eight articles from the Russian literature were transit ted to provide background for our own research. The translations were done by Earth Science Translation Services of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and are presented as received, without editing on our part. Below is a bibliography of the translated articles.</p><p>For approximately the past 20 years Russian geoscientists have been applying an electrogeochemical sampling technique given the Russian acronym CHIM, derived from Chastichnoe Izvlechennye Metallov which translates as \"partial extraction of metals\". In this technique a direct current is introduced into the earth through collector electrodes similar to \"porous pots\" used in electrical geophysical applications. The solution in the cathode is dilute nitric acid, and current is passed through the cathode for times ranging from 6 hours to 48 hours or more. Electrical connections to the nitric acid are made through an inner conductor that is typically spectroscopically pure graphite. At the cathode, mobile cations collect on the graphite or in the nitric acid solution, both of which serve as the geochemical sampling media. These media are then analyzed by appropriate methods for the ions of interest. In most applications of the CHIM method only mobile cations are sampled, although Russian literature does refer to collection of anions as well. More recently the CHIM method has been applied by the Peoples Republic of China and the Indian Geological Survey.</p><p>The literature indicates that the method has advantages over other geochemical sampling techniques by providing increased sensitivity to the metals being searched for, especially where deposits are covered by substantial overburden. In some cases success has been claimed with overburden in excess of 500 meters. The technique appears to have been applied principally to exploration for base- and precious-metal deposits, but does not appear to be limited to these. In this report, the area studied is referred to, collectively or individually, as the 'wilderness study area' or simply 'the study area'; any reference to the Black Mountains North or Burns Spring Wilderness Study Areas refers only to that part of the wilderness study area for which a mineral survey was requested by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The study area is located in western Arizona, about 30 mi northwest of Kingman. There are no identified resources in the study area. An area surrounding the Portland mine and including the southern part of the Black Mountains North Wilderness Study Area and the extreme northwestern part of the Burns Spring Wilderness Study Area has high resource potential for gold and moderate resource potential for silver, lead, and mercury. The area surrounding this and including much of the northern part of the Burns Spring Wilderness Study Area has moderate potential for gold, silver, and lead. The northeastern corner of the Black Mountains North Wilderness Study Area has moderate potential for gold and low potential for silver, copper, and molybdenum resources. The central part, including the narrow strip of land just west of the central part, of the Black Mountains North Wilderness Study Area and the southern and extreme eastern parts of the Burns Spring Wilderness Study Area have low resource potential for gold. The central and southern parts of the Black Mountains North Wilderness Study Area and all but the southwestern part of the Burns Spring Wilderness Study Area have moderate resource potential for perlite. Moderate resource potential for zeolites is assigned to a large area around the Portland mine that includes parts of both study areas, to a narrow strip of land just west of the central part of the Black Mountains North Wilderness Study Area, and to all but the southwest corner of the Burns Spring Wilderness Study Area. There is no potential for oil and gas in either study area. The report summarizes information on the geology, geomorphology, soils, climate, hydrology, water use, land use, population, and coal-mining history of Clay, Owen, Sullivan, and Vigo Counties in Indiana. Site-specific information is given on the morphology, geology, soils, land use, coal-mining history, and hydrologic instrumentation of the six watersheds, which are each less than 3 square miles in area.</p>\n<p>West-central Indiana is underlain by coal-bearing Pennsylvanian rocks. Nearly all of the area has been glaciated at least once and is characterized by wide flood plains and broad, flat uplands. Most of the soils have formed in loess or in loess overlying Illinoian till. The Wabash, White, and Eel Rivers are the major drainages in west-central Indiana. Average annual precipitation is about 39.5 inches per year, and average annual runoff is about 13 inches per year. The most productive aquifers are confined or unconfined outwash aquifers located along the major rivers. Bedrock aquifers are regionally insignificant but are the sole source of ground water for areas that lack outwash, alluvium, or sand and gravel lenses in till.</p>\n<p>Indiana has more than 17 billion short tons of recoverable coal reserves; about 11 percent can be mined by surface methods. Almost half of Indiana's surface reserves are in Clay, Owen, Sullivan, and Vigo Counties. More than 50,000 acres in west-central Indiana were disturbed by surface coal mining from 1941 through 1980.</p>\n<p>Big Slough and Hooker Creek are streams that drain unmined, agricultural watersheds. Row-crop corn and soybeans are the principal crops. Soils are moderately well-drained silt loams, and the watersheds have well-developed dendritic drainage systems.</p>\n<p>The unnamed tributary to Honey Creek and the unnamed tributary to Sulphur Creek are streams that drain mined and reclaimed watersheds. Ridges of mine spoil have been graded to a gently rolling topography. Soils are well drained and consist of 6 to 12 inches of silt-loam topsoil that was stockpiled and then replaced over shale and sandstone fragments of the graded mine spoil. Grasses and legumes form the vegetative cover in each watershed.</p>\n<p>Pond Creek and the unnamed tributary to Big Branch are streams that drain mined and unreclaimed watersheds. Approximately one-half of the Pond Creek watershed is unmined, agricultural land. Soils are very well-drained shaly silty loams that have formed or' steeply sloping spoil banks. Both watersheds contain numerous impoundments of water and have enclosed areas that do not contribute surface runoff to streamflow. It is located in the west-central part of the Sirhan-Turayf basin and is underlain by Silurian to Miocene-Pliocene sedimentary rocks that are partly covered by volcanic flows. The map area also contains large areas of surficial sand and gravel.</p>\n<p>The study area is mainly a structural depression formed by the Wadi as Sirhan graben complex, and it is flanked by highlands of moderate altitude. The Wadi as Sirhan graben is believed to have been formed by tensional forces associated with rifting in the Red Sea.</p>\n<p>The map area contains the Thaniyat, Ghinah, and Arqah phosphorite members, and the phosphate-bearing Sib member. Hypothetical estimates of mineral resource potential of the phosphate rock in the quadrangle are high, but most prospects are either covered with too much overburden or are too thin and of too low a grade to be considered for economic exploitation at this time.</p>\n<p>Several deep drill holes in the Wadi as Sirhan depression have penetrated thick sequences of marine rocks that are potential sources of oil and gas. These deposits are thinnest in northern Queens County (northwestern Long Island), where bedrock crops out, and increase to a maximum thickness of 2,000 ft in southeastern Long Island. This sequence of unconsolidated deposits consists of several distinct geologic units ranging in age from late Cretaceous through Pleistocene, with some recent deposits near shores and streams. These units are differentiated by age, depositional environment, and lithology in table 1. <br />Investigations of ground-water availability and flow patterns may require information on the internal geometry of the hydrologic system that geologic correlations and interpretation alone cannot provide; hydrologic interpretations in which deposits are differentiated on the basis of water-transmitting properties are generally needed also. This set of maps and vertical sections depicts the hydrogeologic framework of the unconsolidated deposits that form Long Island's ground-water system. These deposits can be classified into eight major hydrogeologic units (table 1). The hydrogeologic interpretations presented herein are not everywhere consistent with strict geologic interpretation owing to facies changes and local variations in the water-transmitting properties within geologic units. <br />These maps depict the upper-surface altitude of seven of the eight hydrogeologic units, which, in ascending order, are: consolidated bedrock, Lloyd aquifer, Raritan confining unit, Magothy aquifer, Monmouth greensand, Jameco aquifer, and Gardiners Clay. The upper glacial aquifer&mdash;the uppermost unit&mdash;is at land surface over most of Long Island and is, therefore, not included. The nine north-south hydrogeologic sections shown below depict the entire sequence of unconsolidated deposits and, together with the maps, provide a detailed three-dimensional interpretation of Long Island's hydrogeologic framework. <br />The structure-contour map that shows the upper-surface altitude of the Cretaceous deposits is included to illustrate the erosional unconformity between the Cretaceous and overlying Pleistocene deposits.
