These data were collected as part of a study to determine the geochemical controls on the mobility of arsenic and other trace elements in shallow groundwater systems. The main study area is approximately 7 miles south of Fallon. A subsidiary study area is about 8 miles east of Fallon. The data collected include lithologic logs and water level altitudes for the augered sampling wells and piezometers, and determinations of arsenic and selenium content, grain size, porosity, hydraulic conductivity, and mineralogy for sediment samples from cores. These four variables can be estimated graphically for each stream from distance of travel and either discharge at the downstream end of the reach or flow-duration frequency. From equations developed from field measurements, the traveltime and dispersion characteristics also can be estimated for other unregulated streams in Illinois that have drainage areas less than about 1,500 square miles. For unmeasured streams, traveltime of peak concentration and of the leading edge of the cloud are related to discharge at the downstream end of the reach and to distance of travel. For both measured and unmeasured streams, peak concentration and passage time are best estimated from the relation of each to traveltime. In measured streams, dispersion efficiency is greater than that predicted by Fickian diffusion theory. The rate of decrease in peak concentration with traveltime is about equal to the rate of increase in passage time. Average velocity in a stream reach, given by the velocity of the center of solute mass in that reach, can be estimated from an equation developed from measured values. The equation relates average reach velocity to discharge at the downstream end of the reach. Average reach velocities computed for 9 of the 10 streams from available equations that are based on hydraulic-geometry relations are high relative to measured values. The estimating equation developed from measured velocities provides estimates of average reach velocity that are closer to measured velocities than are those computed using equations developed from Flow in the shallow aquifer is confined to three basins that ultimately drain into a stripmine lake. Most of the flow from the site is through a buried, pebbly sandfilled channel. Remaining flow is toward alluvium of an existing stream. Conceptual flow models for the two largest basins are used to improve definition of flow velocity and direction. Flow velocities range from about 25 to 2,500 ft/yr. Tritium was found in all three basins. The most extensive migration of tritium is coincident with buried channel. The reservoir is fed by the Carson River and by the Truckee Canal which transports water from the adjacent Truckee River. Water quality in both rivers is influenced by agriculture and urbanization. Specific conductance tended to increase in a downstream direction. Generally, pH values ranged from 7.0 to 8.8. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations were greater than 5 milligrams/L. Calcium and sodium were the dominant cations and bicarbonate the dominant anion. Suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 3 to 1,790 milligrams/L. Ultimate carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand ranged from 1.2 to 19.6 milligrams/L. The codominant algal groups were the blue-greens, greens, and diatoms. Background total nutrient and suspended-sediment loads were about 490 tons nitrogen, 130 tons phosphorus, and 200,000 tons suspended sediment. Total nutrient and suspended-sediment loads to Lahontan Reservoir were about 980 tons nitrogen, 300 tons phosphorus, and 300,000 tons suspended sediment. This report documents the water quality during the period 1975-83. The water quality is good for most uses and is a calcium bicarbonate type. Concentrations of most constituents analyzed were less than most sites in Wisconsin. Constituent loads and yields were alsg lower in the Sceiilc Riverway than in other Wisconsin streams. Water-quality samples were collected at 10 stations throughout the study area and were compared to analyses of samples from selected National Stream Quality Accounting Network stations (NASQAN) and the Hydrologic Bench-Mark NetWork (HBMN) station in Wisconsin.</p>\n<p>The average suspended-sediment concentration for 9 of the 10 stations in this study was 7.7 milligrams per liter. This compared with an average suspended-sediment concentration of 11 milligrams per liter for two other stations in the scenic riverway and an average suspended-sediment concentration of 110 milligrams per liter for Wisconsin. Concentrations of major cations and anions were generally below concentrations at other stations in the State. The concentrations of major cations and anions at two of the stations were similar to concentrations at the HBMN station Popple River near Fence. Mean total phosphorus concentrations ranged from 0. 02 to 0. 08 milligram per liter at the study stations and from 0.03 to 0.16 milligram per liter at selected NASQAN stations. Concentrations of trace metals were below safe drinking water standards at all the study sites except for iron and manganese which exceeded drinking water standards at some of the study sites. Pesticides were sampled at the St. Croix River at St. Croix Falls and above and below cranberry bogs that drain into the Namekagon River. No pesticides were detected in the water/suspended-sediment mixture or bottom material.</p>\n<p>Average annual loads of suspended sediment, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and dissolved solids were calculated by a flow-duration curve method. Annual suspended-sediment loads ranged from 580 to 25,000 tons per year at the study stations. Annual suspended-sediment loads at the HBMN station and NASQAN stations ranged from 720 tons at the Popple River near Fence to 443,000 tons at the Chippewa River near Durand. Average annual total phosphorus loads ranged from 6,800 to 900,000 pounds at the study stations compared with 145,000 to 1 ,600,000 pounds at selected Wisconsin NASQAN stations.</p>\n<p>Yields for suspended sediment, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and dissolved solids at the study stations were consistently lower than at other stations in the State. Suspendedsediment yields ranged from 1.9 to 13.3 tons per square mile. The average suspended-sediment yield for Wisconsin is 80 tons per square mile.
