Simulation of flood hydrographs for rural watersheds in South Carolina","docAbstract":"A method is given for simulating a typical (average) flood hydrograph corresponding to a peak discharge of specific recurrence interval for ungaged rural basins having drainage areas less than 500 sq mi in South Carolina. Dimensionless hydrographs were developed for three regions on the basis of 188 storm events at 49 stations that represent a wide range of drainage area sizes and basin conditions. The design peak discharge and a basin lagtime (which has been adjusted to produce correct hydrograph volume) are required to apply the technique. The standard errors of estimate for simulated hydrograph widths at 50 and 75%, respectively, of observed stormflow were +/-14.1 and +/-18.3% for basins in the Blue Ridge physiographic province, +/-29.2 and +/-36.2% for basins in the Piedmont province, and +/-17.8 and +/-22.8% for basins in the Coastal Plain provinces. Precipitation in the Laurel Hill area is among the most acidic in the Nation, with a mean volume-weighted pH of 4.06. Sulfate is the dominant acid-forming anion, averaging 3.6 milligrams per liter or about 50 kilograms per hectare in wet deposition alone. Nitrate averages about 2 milligrams per liter or 7 kilograms per hectare in the study area.\r\n\r\n      Stream chemistry in the five streams is quite variable and apparently is influenced to a large degree by the bedrock geology and by small amounts of alkaline material in watershed soils. Three of the five streams with no or little acid-neutralizing capacity presently are devoid of fish because of low pH and elevated aluminum concentrations. Aluminum concentrations increase in the other two streams during rainfall and snowmelt despite comparatively higher base flow and acid-neutralizing capacities.\r\n\r\n      Comparison of the chemistry of streamflow during 14 storm events at South Fork Bens Creek and North Fork Bens Creek reveals similar chemical responses when discharge suddenly increases. Concentrations of dissolved metals and sulfate increased during stormflow and snowmelt runoff, whereas concentrations of base cations, silica, and chloride decreased. Nitrate concentrations were not affected by rainfall runoff by tended to increase with snowmelt runoff.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Statistical summaries were compiled for 28 streamflow-gaging stations in and near the reservation. Mean annual streamflow for 1930-86 was computed for stations with complete records for the period; for those stations with records that did not completely cover the 1930-86 period, record extension techniques were used. Mean annual streamflow for ungaged sites on streams with gaging stations was estimated by interpolation between data points using drainage-area ratios. Two regional-regression equations were derived to estimate mean annual streamflow at sites on ungaged natural streams. The standard error of the regression for estimation of mean annual flow for sites in the Salt River basin is -37 to +59%. The standard error of the regression for estimation of mean annual flow for sites in the Gila River basins is -18 to +21%. Specifically, the study dealt with 79 streamflow gages and 2 canal-flow gages that were under the direct operation of Nevada personnel as of 1983. Cost-effective allocations of resources, including budget and operational criteria, were studied using statistical procedures known as Kalman-filtering techniques. The possibility of developing streamflow data at ungaged sites was evaluated using flow-routing and statistical regression analyses. Neither of these methods provided sufficiently accurate results to warrant their use in place of stream gaging. The 81 gaging stations were being operated in 1983 with a budget of $465,500. As a result of this study, all existing stations were determined to be necessary components of the program for the foreseeable future. At the 1983 funding level, the average standard error of streamflow records was nearly 28%. This same overall level of accuracy could have been maintained with a budget of approximately $445,000 if the funds were redistributed more equitably among the gages. The maximum budget analyzed, $1,164 ,000 would have resulted in an average standard error of 11%. The study indicates that a major source of error is lost data. If perfectly operating equipment were available, the standard error for the 1983 program and budget could have been reduced to 21%. Samples of surface and groundwater, bottom sediment, and biota were collected from sites upstream and downstream from the Fallon agricultural area in the Carson Desert, and analyzed for potentially toxic trace elements. Other analysis included radioactive substances, major dissolved constituents, and nutrients in water, and pesticide residues in bottom sediment and biota. In areas affected by irrigation drainage, the following constituents were found to commonly exceed baseline concentrations or recommended criteria for protection of aquatic life or propagation of wildlife: In water, arsenic, boron, dissolved solids, molybdenum, sodium, and un-ionized ammonia; in bottom sediments, arsenic, lithium, mercury, molybdenum, and selenium; and in biota, arsenic, boron, chromium, copper, mercury, selenium, and zinc. In some wetlands, selenium and mercury appeared to be biomagnified, and arsenic bioaccumulated. Pesticides contamination in bottom sediments and biota was insignificant. Adverse biological effects observed during this reconnaissance included gradual vegetative changes and species loss, fish die-offs, waterfowl disease epidemics, and persistent and unexplained deaths of migratory birds. This map is being combined with digital geophysical data to produce three-dimensional depictions of the subsurface geology and to produce cross sections of the Earth's crust. It is an essential component of a transect that stretches from the craton near Quebec City, Quebec, to the Atlantic Ocean Basin south of Georges Bank. The transect is part of the Global Geosciences Transect Project of the International Lithosphere Program. \r\n\r\nThe Digital Line Graph format is used for storage of the digitized data. A coding scheme similar to that used for base category planimetric data was developed to assign numeric codes to the digitized geologic data. These codes were used to assign attributes to polygon and line features to describe rock type, age, name, tectonic setting of original deposition, mineralogy, and composition of igneous plutonic rocks, as well as faults and other linear features. \r\n\r\nThe digital geologic data can be readily edited, rescaled, and reprojected. The attribute codes allow generalization and selective retrieval of the geologic features. The codes allow assignment of map colors based on age, lithology, or other attribute. About 20 feet of clay underlying the Delta land surface commonly is underlain by about 80 to 180 feet of sand and gravel that forms the Mississippi River alluvial aquifer. This study of the alluvial aquifer was prompted by recent declines of water levels. The study was designed to better define the hydrology of the aquifer and to quantify availability of water from the aquifer. \r\n\r\nThe Mississippi River is in good hydraulic connection with the alluvial aquifer. Generally, smaller streams are less likely to recharge the aquifer than larger streams. Direct vertical recharge to the alluvial aquifer from the 52 inches per year of precipitation is small, especially in the central part of the Delta. \r\n\r\nA two-dimensional finite-difference computer model of the alluvial aquifer was constructed, calibrated, and verified using water levels observed for five dates from April 1981 to September 1983. The values of some of the calibration-derived parameters are hydraulic conductivity, 400 feet per day; specific yield, 0.30; and infiltration of precipitation to the aquifer, 0.5 inch per year. \r\n\r\nThe model showed that the aquifer had a net loss in storage of about 360 million gallons per day from April 1981 to April 1983. During this period, pumpage was about 1,100 million gallons per day (1,270,000 acre-feet per year), and the net inflows from the sources of recharge were as follows, in million gallons per day: Mississippi River, 390; recharge along the east edge of the Delta, 170; streams within the Delta, 57; areal recharge from infiltration, 180; and oxbow lakes, 24. \r\n\r\nThe effects of several levels of pumpage by wells--0, 670, 1,100, 1,900, and 4,000 million gallons per day--were projected 20 years into the future. The mine workings are located near the eastern edge of a flat plain covered by eolian sand and drained by Wadi Bishah. Two elongate dumps, 75 m wide and 530 m long (combined length), comprise the workings. Rising 4 m above the plain, they are prominent features in this area of low relief.</p>\n<p>Core drilling (1,023 m total depth drilled) was conducted to define the extent of potential gold occurrences at the prospect. The two northeasternmost of the four holes drilled unequivocally intersected the gold-bearing main vein zone. Drill hole 1, the northeasternmost hole drilled, passed through significant lengths of altered wall rocks + quartz veins containing &gt; 100 ppb Au (threshold value). The average gold concentration of all intercepts in drill holes 1 through 4 is 278 ppb; the total length of drill core that assayed above the gold threshold value is 13.46 m. The highest gold concentration (1,620 ppb) reported in geochemical assay results was obtained from a 0.33 m length of core in drill hole 1. Gold-intercept occurrences are not economic in the rocks drilled; no further deep drilling is recommended at this time.</p>\n<p>Gold concentrations in samples obtained from mine dumps are much higher than in drill-core samples. Samples collected by earlier workers assayed 3-7 g/t, and tonnage estimates of mine spoil have been estimated to be as high as 120,000 tons. A possible sampling bias in earlier studies may favor larger gold-enriched, samples relative to samples from quartz tailings. Further work at Ishmas Kabir should be limited to defining gold resource potential in the dumps and in the oxidized, near-surface quartz-vein system.</p>\n<p>Primary gold at the Ishmas Kabir gold prospect occurs with quartz veins and associated sericite + pyrite alteration hosted by quartz diorite and mafic dikes. The highest gold concentrations both in dumps (earlier studies) and drill core (this investigation) are found with limonite + hematite in breccia zones, in stringer veins, and in sericitic alteration envelopes surrounding quartz veins. Secondary gold is significant in this system and attests to the importance of oxidizing, acidic solutions.</p>\n<p>Quartz veins intersected by drill holes are surrounded by mylonite schist. Quartz and carbonate veins less than 5 mm thick are boudined, whereas thick quartz veins (&pound; 1.2 m) have disrupted and brecciated margins; mylonitized country rock envelops quartz-vein fragments. Sulfide mineralization associated with vein formation predates this rock-deformation event. Contemporaneous brittle and ductile deformation of quartz veins and country rocks occurred during the Nabitah orogeny.
