The 2-, 5-, 10-, and 25-year base-flow-recurrence intervals were determined for each station. The 50- and 100-year recurrence intervals were determined for stations with minimums of 25 and 50 years of record, respectively. All active and inactive continuous-recording Pennsylvania streamflow stations with 10 or more years of record through water year 1986 were analyzed. Stations on the Delaware River in New York and New Jersey also were included. Hydrograph analysis by computer provides consistency of results by removing the subjectivity inherent in manual analyses and considerably reduces the time required to make the analyses. Estimates of the 25-year base-flow-recurrence interval made by using the local-minimum technique, which gives the most conservative estimate, range from 0.069 to 0.888 million gallons per day per square mile. Base flows estimated by using the three computer-assisted techniques compared well with published base flows estimated by using manual methods for three studies in southeastern Pennsylvania. Examples of the effects of geology, climate, regulation, and urbanization on base flow are provided.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The data were collected to provide a record of groundwater changes over the long-term and pumpage estimates that can be incorporated into an existing groundwater model. The estimated total pumpage in water year 1986 was 10,200 acre-ft and in water year 1987 was 13,400 acre-ft. Groundwater levels exhibited seasonal fluctuations but remained relatively stable over the reporting period throughout most of the valley. The technical basis on which the National Park Service can develop flood-management plans for use in evaluating their existing or future developments at Akers and Alley Spring recreational areas is given in Hydrologic Investigations Atlas HA-712-A (Alexander, in press).</p><p>The Ozark National Scenic Riverways, administered by the National Park Service, is an extensively used recreational area where approximately 2 million visitors per year (M.E. Hunter, National Park Service, oral commun., 1985) participate in a wide range of river-use and land-based activities. Visitor areas along the 134-mi (mile) reach of the Current River and its principal tributary, Jacks Fork, range from highly-developed areas mostly along the upper Current River to primitive camping areas and river accesses along the Jacks Fork and downstream reach of the Current River. Most facilities at these developments are in or near flood-prone areas. The aquifer was studied as part of the Central Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (CMRASA, Jorgensen and Signor, 1981), a study of regional aquifer systems in the midcontinent United States that includes parts of 10 States. Because of its significance as a source of freshwater in and adjacent to the Ozark Plateaus province (index map) of Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma, a subregional project was established to investigate the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system in more detail than the regional study could provide.<br />The geologic and hydrologic relation between the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system and other regional aquifer systems of the Midwest is presented in Jorgensen an others (in press). The relation of the St. Francois aquifer to the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system is explained in Imes [in press (a)]. A companion publication, Imes [in press (b)], contains contour maps of the altitude of the top, thickness, and potentiometric surface of the St. Francois aquifer. This report contains maps that show water type and concentration of dissolved solids, chloride, and sulfate in water from the St. Francois aquifer. Most of the data from which these maps are compiled is stored in the CMRASA hydrochemical data base (R.B. Leonard, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 1986). Only water quality analyses that ionically balanced to within 10 percent are included in this report.
