The existence of a categorically stable attractor characterizing both types of activities strongly suggests that the excitation mechanism of tremor is similar to that of gas piston events, which in turn are correlated with visual observations at the volcanic vent. The prevalence of ingested lead shot was significantly higher at Catahoula Lake (27%) than at the Mississippi River Delta (4%). Canvasbacks collected at Catahoula Lake showed significant differences in prevalence of ingested lead shot by age and month. We attributed age-related and seasonal variations to differences in foraging effort and exposure time. If the kill is related to the presence of toxic chemicals, there may be human health concerns, in addition to the obvious damage to the ecosystem and the fisheries resources. Depending on the cause of a fish kill, legal and economic ramifications may be involved. If the kill is cause by human or corporate actions, litigation is likely to follow, with possible court-awarded damages and assessed costs for cleanup and restoration.</p><p>Federal and State agencies have expressed the need for a compendium of known and accepted methods and techniques that should be followed by anyone investigation a fish kill. This manual is an attempt to fill that need. It addresses the many facets involved in a fish kill investigation and provides instruction, guidance, examples, and sample forms that can be used.</p><p>The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is pleased to provide this manual to help fisheries biologists and others prepare for a fish kill investigation. Research and Development (Region 8) has cooperated with the Division of Environmental Contaminants in Fish and Wildlife Enhancement to provide expertise and funds. A known dead load, simulating an overburden load, was applied to a sample of completely saturated aquifer material contained inside a cylinder. After the dead load was applied, water was withdrawn from the sample, causing the hydrostatic pressure to decrease and the effective stress to increase. The resulting compression of the sample and the amount of water withdrawn were measured after equilibrium was reached. The procedure was repeated by increasing the dead load and the hydrostatic pressure followed by withdrawing water to determine new values of effective stress and compaction. The simulated dead loads are typical of those experienced by shallow artesian aquifers. The void ratio and the effective stress of the aquifer sample, as simulated by different dead loads, determine the pore volume compressibility which, in turn, determines the values of specific storage. An analytical algorithm was used to independently determine the stress dependent profile of specific storage. These values are found to be in close agreement with laboratory results. Tidal stage data, current meter measurements, and conductivity, temperature, and depth profiling data in San Francisco Bay are used for comparison with model predictions. An extensive review of the literature is conducted to assess the success and failure of previous similar investigations and to establish a strategy for development of the present model. A &sigma; plane transformation is used in the vertical dimension to alleviate problems associated with fixed grid model applications in the bay, where the tidal range can be as much as 20&ndash;25% of the total water depth. Model predictions of tidal stage and velocity compare favorably with the available field data, and prototype salinity stratification is qualitatively reproduced. Introduction and dispersal","docAbstract":"<p>The euryhaline bivalve mollusc Potamocorbula amurensis (family Corbulidae), a native of China, Japan, and Korea, has recently appeared and become very abundant in San Francisco Bay. This clam appears to have been introduced as veliger larvae in the seawater ballast of cargo vessels. It was first collected in northern San Francisco Bay in late 1986. P, amurensis then spread throughout the estuary within 2 yr and reached densities at some sites exceeding 10 000 m<sup>-2</sup> It lives primarily in the subtidal on all substrates (mud, sand, peat, and clay) and is found in the full range of bay salinities (&lt; 1 to 33%). Its explosive increase in abundance and spread may result in major alterations of the San Francisco Bay estuary ecosystem. These could include changes in (1) trophic dynamics (through competition with other suspension-feeding and deposit-feeding infauna; changes in benthic community energy flow; availability of a new and abundant prey item for birds, fish, and crabs; and reduction - as a result of its filter feeding - of phytoplankton standmg stock) and (2) benthic dynamics (through inhibition and/or enhancement of infauna due to substrate destabilization; alteration of suspended sediment load of near-bottom water; and change of sediment surface redox balance). Strong seasonal variations in metal concentrations of M. balthica were associated with seasonal variations in soft tissue weight. Aperiodic fluctuations in metal concentration appeared to be driven by changes in metal content of the soft tissues. Metal content of clams of standard shell length was less variable than tissue metal concentration, and generally followed changes in the concentrations of Cu and Ag in the sediments. Correlations between metal content and sediment concentrations were improved when content was standardized to age rather than shell length. Metal content of M. balthica displayed few consistent temporal trends among stations, evidently reflecting different sources of input and complex hydrologic and geochemical processes affecting metal availability in San Francisco Bay. Increases in Cu and Ag were noted at several stations in South Bay during 1977 to 1980. Relations for apparent longitudinal and transverse dispersivity are developed through an analytical solution for dispersion in a fluctuating, quasi-steady uniform flow field, in which storativity is zero. For transient flow, spatial moments are evaluated from numerical solutions. Ignored or unknown transients in the direction of flow primarily act to increase the apparent transverse dispersivity because the longitudinal dispersivity is acting in a direction that is not the assumed flow direction. This increase is a function of the angle between the transient flow vector and the assumed steady state flow direction and the ratio of transverse to longitudinal dispersivity. The types of maps produced by the center have been national, regional, or local in scope depending on user needs. Map scales have ranged from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000. Themes depicted have included biological resources, including wetlands and seagrasses; upland habitat or land use; water resources such as water quality, bathymetry, and salinity; cultural features such as ownership, archaeological sites, and dredge-spoil disposal areas; and soils and landforms. We present overviews on the various mapping programs of the center. We highlight efforts such as the ecological inventories of the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts; the ecological characterization atlases of the Gulf of Mexico; and the large scale (1:24,000) habitat maps of various coastal regions of the United States. Center methods and techniques are discussed, including the collaborative efforts between the center and FWS's National Wetlands Inventory for updating wetland maps and adding upland and seagrass bed delineations to inventory maps. The sulfur isotope data are treated as an isotope dilution problem, whereas the carbon isotope data are treated as Rayleigh distillations. All reaction models reproduce the observed chemical and carbon and sulfur isotopic composition of the final waters and are partially validated by predicting the observed carbon and sulfur isotopic compositions of dolomite and anhydrite from the Madison Limestone. The geochemical reaction models indicate that the dominant groundwater reaction in the Madison aquifer is dedolomitization (calcite precipitation and dolomite dissolution driven by anhydrite dissolution). Sulfate reduction, [Ca</span><sup>2+</sup><span>&nbsp;+ Mg</span><sup>2+</sup><span>]/Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;cation exchange, and halite dissolution are locally important, particularly in central Montana. The groundwater system is treated as closed to CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;gas from external sources such as the soil zone or cross‐formational leakage but open to CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;from oxidation of organic matter coupled with sulfate reduction and other redox processes occurring within the aquifer. The computed mineral mass transfers and modeled sulfur isotopic composition of Madison anhydrites are mapped throughout the study area. Carbon 14 groundwater ages, adjusted for the modeled carbon mass transfer, range from modern to about 23,000 years B.P. and indicate flow velocities of 7–87 ft/yr (2.1–26.5 m/yr). Most horizontal hydraulic conductivities calculated from Darcy's Law using the average&nbsp;</span><sup>14</sup><span>C flow velocities are within a factor of 5 of those based on digital simulation. The calculated mineral mass transfer and adjusted&nbsp;</span><sup>14</sup><span>C groundwater ages permit determination of apparent rates of reaction in the aquifer. The apparent rate of organic matter oxidation is typically 0.12 μmol/L/yr. Sulfate and, to a lesser extent, ferric iron are the predominant electron acceptors. The (kinetic) biochemical fractionation of&nbsp;</span><sup>34</sup><span>S between sulfate and hydrogen sulfide is approximately −44‰ at 25°C, with a temperature variation of −0.4‰ per °C. The rates of precipitation of calcite and dissolution of dolomite and anhydrite typically are 0.59, 0.24, and 0.95 μmol/L/yr, respectively. This paper is not subject to U.S. copyright. Stomach samples were collected by induced emesis from 1,803 live birds of 15 species and during necropsy of 277 dead birds of 5 species. The prevalence of ingested plastic varied greatly among species; age, year of collection, and location of the study site had less pronounced but significant effects. Ingested plastic was absent or uncommon in terns and noddies. Plastic was not found at all in samples from gray-backed terns, <i>Sterna lunata</i>, or white terns, <i>Gygis alba</i>. The prevalence was low in sooty terns, <i>Sterna fuscata</i> (0 to 8%), and brown, <i>Anous stolidus</i>, and black noddies, <i>A. minutus</i> (0 to 3%). Plastic was much more prevalent (67 to 100%) in chicks of black-footed, <i>Diomedea nigripes</i>, and Laysan albatrosses, <i>D. immutabilis</i>. In the 11 other species prevalence ranged from 0 to 44% depending on the age, year of collection, and location. The mean volume of plastic in samples collected at necropsy from Laysan albatross chicks was higher in 1986 (46 cc) than in 1987 (5 cc). Prevalence was generally higher in seabirds which fed at the surface. Fragments of manufactured articles were the most common type of plastic found. Other plastics included pellets, Styrofoam, bottle caps, bags, and sponges. The Manson impact structure is a candidate site because of its size (the largest such structure recognized in the United States); in addition, the largest and most abundant shocked quartz grains at the K/T boundary are found relatively close by, and its age is indistinguishable from that of the K/T boundary.</p><p>The region of northwest central Iowa that contains the Manson impact structure is covered by Quaternary glacial deposits, which are underlain by Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks (mostly flat-lying carbonates) and Proterozoic red clastic, metamorphic, volcanic, and plutonic rocks. In a circular area about 22 mi (35 km) in diameter around Manson, Iowa, this normal sequence is absent or “disturbed.” Within the structure, three roughly concentric zones of rock associations have been identified: an outer zone of displaced strata, a zone of completely disrupted strata, and a central area in which basement igneous and metamorphic rocks have been uplifted at least 1,220 ft (4,000 m). Gravity, magnetic, and seismic refraction surveys readily identify the central uplift within the structure. Manson is established as an impact structure based on its circular shape, its central uplift, and the presence of shocked quartz within the granitic central uplift.</p><p>Paleontological evidence, a fission track age, and preliminary<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>40</sup>Ar/<sup>39</sup>Ar dating all allowed a K/T boundary age for the Manson structure. Improved<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>40</sup>Ar/<sup>39</sup>Ar age spectra may be interpreted in terms of samples that were incompletely degassed during heating due to the Manson impact. The Sm-Nd radiogenic isotope system was unperturbed by the alteration, but the Rb-Sr system was severely disturbed in the altered zone. The thick, densely welded high-silica rhyolite is remarkably uniform in composition with only a slight decrease in initial&nbsp;</span><sup><span class=\"sup\">87</span></sup><span>Sr/</span><sup><span class=\"sup\">86</span></sup><span>Sr ratios with depth (0.7129–0.7125). Quartz latite in the upper part of the Topopah Spring has significantly lower initial Sr isotope ratios (0.7095–0.7114). Locally in the altered zone, Sr and Ca were gained in substantial amounts, and K, Rb, and Y were removed. Ti, Zr, Nb, Ba, La, Ce, Sm, and Nd were relatively immobile during the alteration. Plant foods comprised &gt;97 aggregate percent dry mass of the canvasback diet. The proportion of plant material eaten did not vary with sex, age, or month, or differ between study sites or nocturnal and diurnal collections. Tubers of chufa flatsedge (</span><i>Cyperus esculentus</i><span>) and common arrowhead (</span><i>Sagittaria latifolia</i><span>) made up 94% of the canvasback diet at Catahoula Lake. Common and grassy arrowhead (</span><i>Sagittaria graminea</i><span>) tubers and American bulrush (</span><i>Scirpus americanus</i><span>) rhizomes and seeds formed 94% of the canvasback diet at the Mississippi River Delta. Consumption of specific food taxa did not vary with sex, age, or month at either study site. Canvasbacks at the Mississippi River Delta preferred seeds of American bulrush over all other foods, but American bulrush rhizomes were underrepresented in the diet. Canvasback feeding, resting, locomotory, and comfort activities varied by month and location with a month-location interaction. Moreover, the percentage of time spent feeding varied by sex with a month-sex interaction. Study site differences in the time- activity budgets of wintering Canvasbacks may be related to characteristics of their foods, foraging mode, disturbance level, and physical features of habitats at the two study sites. Canvasbacks wintering in Louisiana generally spent less time feeding and more time resting during the day than they did in Mississippi or coastal South Carolina. Levels of agonistic behavior were lower than those observed in South Carolina.
