including whitneyi J. P. Smith), variously assigned to the genera Amaltheus, Quenstediceras, Amoeboceras, and Cardioceras, and subtumidum Whitfield and Hovey, assigned to Aegoceras, include all the previously described species of Jurassic ammonites that are considered in this paper. Material accumulated in the National Museum at Washington, mainly through the efforts of field parties of the United States Geological Survey, has shown, however, the presence of a number of undescribed forms of considerable scientific interest. These new species were obtained mainly from the Sundance formation of Wyoming. One comes from the Ellis formation of Montana, one from Jurassic beds near Lillooet, British Columbia, and three from the Cardioceras-bearing beds near the base of the Naknek formation of Alaska.

In 1906 the increase in the number of papers coming under this (Classification made it necessary to divide the contributions into two parts, one including, papers on metals and nonmetals except fuels and the other including papers on mineral fuels. In 1915 the year included in the title was changed from the year in which the field work reported in these papers was done to the year of publication, and in consequence there was no volume entitled \"Contributions to economic geology, 1914.” The subjoined table gives a summary of these bulletins.
As the subtitle indicates, the papers included in these volumes are of two classes (1) short papers giving comparatively detailed descriptions of occurrences that have economic interest but are not of sufficient importance to warrant a more extended description; (2) preliminary reports on economic investigations the results of which are to be published later in more detailed form. These papers are such only as Have a direct economic bearing, all topics of purely scientific interest being excluded.
Brief abstracts of the publications of the year are given in the annual report of the Director. The complete list of Survey publications affords, by means of finding lists of subjects and of authors, further aid in ascertaining the extent of the Survey's work in economic geology.
The reports on work in Alaska have been printed in a separate series since 1904, the volumes so far issued being Bulletins 259, 284, 314, 345, 379, 442, 480, 520, 542, 592, 622, 642, and 662.

(See fig. 1.) In a broader sense, the Kantishna region should include the entire Kantishna basin and part of the Nenana basin, but the present paper does not describe the part of the Nenana, basin that lies east of the main river between Broad Pass and the Tanana, the part of the Alaska Range that lies south of a line drawn from the mouth of Hines Creek to the terminus of Muldrow Glacier, and the part of the Kantishna basin that lies west of McKinley Fork and west of the main river below the mouth of McKinley Fork. Furthermore, the lowland of Tanana River north of the outermost range of foothills was visited only along the courses of Kantishna and Nenana, rivers. The area here considered lies between parallels 63° 25' and 65° north latitude and meridians 149° and 151° 10' west longitude. It includes about' 4,500 square miles and comprises a part of the Alaska Range and its foothills and a part of the Tanana lowland.
