The Southwest Region has been supporting Resource Basic Inventory (RBI) efforts to establish baseline data for comparisons with long-term monitoring results to be conducted in the future. This “pulse taking” is a part of the Servicewide initiative being fostered so that resource managers, scientists, and park managers will be able to track the health of park resources by determining changes and trends. The RBI work is being linked with the development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Bandelier, Big Thicket, Big Bend, Padre Island, and Guadalupe Mountains. Many of the parks in the southwest Region have only partially completed RBIs. This informational shortcoming is a pervasive threat to the parks because without detailed knowledge of the parks’ respective resources the Service cannot protect them adequately.
\nTo overcome this deficiency, the SWRO’s Division of Natural Resources Management and Science has fostered at Bandelier a pilot research effort, which started in FY ’87 and utilizes a landscape ecology paradigm. This concept links the RBI, GIS, and research activities in a park to present an overall picture of the park in its regional ecosystem setting. The flowchart diagrams this project’s concept. The results have been encouraging. A final report was recently completed (Allen 1989). This concept may now be applied to other Southwest Region parks.

Tallac roof pendant are interpreted to be syntectonic fault trough deposits. Similar deposits in similar stratigraphic successions throughout the northern Sierra Nevada demonstrate that the Middle Jurassic continental-margin arc north of latitude 39° was essentially marine, and possibly extensional or transtensional in nature. Recognition of Middle Jurassic syntectonic deposits in the northern Sierra Nevada establishes continuity of structural style between the arc in the northern Sierra Nevada and a portion of the arc south of latitude 39°, which has been interpreted as an ancient analog of the modern extensional or transtensional Central American arc. The Middle Jurassic marine conglomeratic deposits in the northern Sierra Nevada form one of three post–Late Triassic stratigraphic elements shared by the northern Sierra terrane and rocks of probable cratonal affinity in west-central Nevada. Upper Triassic limestone in the northern Sierra Nevada is linked faunally to correlative limestone of west-central Nevada. While correlation is speculative, Lower to Middle(?) Jurassic intervals of quartzose sandstone are common to parts of the Sailor Canyon Formation in the northern Sierra terrane and to rocks of the Auld Lang Syne Group, Boyer Ranch Formation, and Dunlap Formation of west-central Nevada. Middle Jurassic syntectonic conglomeratic deposits, such as in the Dunlap Formation of west-central Nevada, are now recognized in the northern Sierra terrane as well.

This discussion is concerned principally with inorganic chemistry and geochemistry. However, biochemical processes in river and lake water influence their chemical composition extensively, and specific effects are pointed out. Aquatic biology is discussed in another chapter. The physical processes occurring in lakes also have very important effects on water chemistry; these aspects of limnology are covered more fully in a separate chapter.
Data on which this chapter is based relate mostly to waters of Canada, the United States, and Mexico. For most of Central America, very little water-quality information is available. Tables 1 through 3 contain analytical data for river waters that illustrate some of the principles discussed, and summarize major features of the chemical composition of North American surface waters.
To a certain extent, at least, one would expect the average concentrations of dissolved elements in surface fresh water to reflect the relative abundance of the elements in the crustal rocks exposed at and near the land surface.

Generally a low prevalence, widely-scattered, individual animal disease, avian tuberculosis is caused by the same agent in wild and domestic birds. Thus there exists the potential for disease transfer between these two groups in situations that result in direct contact such as wild animals newly captured or transferred from rehabilitation centers, and wild and captive animals intermingling in exhibit areas. During the past 7 yr, tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium avium, was diagnosed in 64 birds submitted to the National Wildlife Health Research Center from 16 states; avian tuberculosis was the primary diagnosis in 52 of the 64 birds, while the remaining 12 isolates were incidental findings. Twenty-eight of these birds were picked up during epizootics caused by other disease agents including avian cholera, botulism type C, and lead, organophosphorus compound, and cyanide poisoning. Twelve birds were found incidental to birds collected during disease monitoring programs and research projects, and 10 birds were collected by hunters or found sick and euthanatized. Tuberculosis lesions occurred (in order of decreasing frequency) in the liver, intestine, spleen, lung, and air sacs. Several unusual morphological presentations were observed in the gizzard, shoulder joint, jugular vein, face, nares and bill, ureter and bone marrow. Infected birds were collected during all 12 mo of the yr from a variety of species in the Anseriformes, Podicipediformes, Gruiformes, and Falconiformes. Nine of the 46 known age birds were immature indicating that lesions can develop during the first year.

Chloride/bromide solute ratios, which are thought to be unaffected by mineral precipitation or sorption, average 160 in saline lakes and springs, close to an average for the High Plains aquifer (140), and are significantly different from the average deep-basin brines (680). Solute ratios of sodium/potassium, chloride/sulfate, and sulfur isotopes, although not conservative, also strongly support the hypothesis that solutes in the lakes were derived from shallow ground water from the High Plains aquifer and from overland runoff rather than from deep-basin brines.
