Murres (primarily common murres <i>Uria aalge</i>), Atlantic puffins <i>Fratercula arctica</i>, and schooling fish (primarily capelin <i>Mallotus villosus</i>) were highly aggregated at spatial scales ranging from 0.25 to 15 km. Patchiness of murres, puffins and schooling fish was scale-dependent, as indicated by significantly higher variance-to-mean ratios at large measurement distances than at the minimum distance, 0.25 km. Patch scale of puffins ranged from 2.5 to 15 km, of murres from 3 to 8.75 km, and of schooling fish from 1.25 to 15 km. Patch scale of birds and schooling fish was similar m 6 out of 9 comparisons. Correlation between seabirds and schooling birds was significant at the minimum measurement distance in 6 out of 12 comparisons. Correlation was scale-dependent, as indicated by significantly higher coefficients at large measurement distances than at the minimum distance. Tracking scale, as indicated by the maximum significant correlation between birds and schooling fish, ranged from 2 to 6 km. Our analysis showed that extended aggregations of seabirds are associated with extended aggregations of schooling fish and that correlation of these marine carnivores with their prey is scale-dependent.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Research Science Center","usgsCitation":"Schneider, D.C., and Piatt, J.F., 1986, Scale-dependent correlation of seabirds with schooling fish in a coastal ecosystem: Marine Ecology Progress Series, v. 32, p. 237-246.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"237","endPage":"246","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":336992,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":336990,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/meps/v32/","text":"Volume 32 on Journals's Website"}],"country":"Canada","state":"Newfoundland","otherGeospatial":"Avalon Channel, Grand Banks","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -53.5638427734375,\n              46.35451083736523\n            ],\n            [\n              -51.7620849609375,\n              46.35451083736523\n            ],\n            [\n              -51.7620849609375,\n              47.908978314728714\n            ],\n            [\n              -53.5638427734375,\n              47.908978314728714\n            ],\n            [\n              -53.5638427734375,\n              46.35451083736523\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"32","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58bfd51ae4b014cc3a3ba64d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schneider, Davod C.","contributorId":7800,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schneider","given":"Davod","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":681137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Piatt, John F. 0000-0002-4417-5748 jpiatt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4417-5748","contributorId":3025,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Piatt","given":"John","email":"jpiatt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":117,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology WTEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":681138,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Cross-polarization and magic-angle spinning 13C NMR spectroscopy clearly shows pronounced differences between the commercial materials and all other samples. Elemental and infrared spectroscopic data do not show such clear-cut differences but can be used as supportive evidence, with the 13C NMR data, to substantiate the above distinctions. All 3 regions showed a roughly exponential increase of conductivity with depth. Distinct discontinuities seemed to be evident near 255-300km and near 450-600km. Regional differences in the conductivity profiles were shown by the functional fittings to the data. For depths less than about 275km, the N American conductivities seemed to be significantly higher than the other regions. Geological Survey streamgaging network. The objective of the study is to define and document the most cost-effective means of furnishing streamflow information. In the first step of this study, data uses were identified for 3,493 continuous-record stations currently being operated in 32 States. In the second step, evaluation of alternative methods of providing streamflow information, flow-routing models, and regression models were developed for estimating daily flows at 251 stations of the 3,493 stations analyzed. In the third step of the analysis, relationships were developed between the accuracy of the streamflow records and the operating budget. The existing streamgaging networks in four Districts were further analyzed to determine the impacts that satellite telemetry would have on the cost effectiveness. Satellite telemetry was not found to be cost effective on the basis of hydrologic-data collection alone, given present cost of equipment and operation.","conferenceTitle":"Preprinted Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on River Basin Management.","conferenceLocation":"Sao Paolo, Braz","language":"English","publisher":"Int Assoc on Water Pollution Research & Control","publisherLocation":"London, Engl","usgsCitation":"Scott, A.G., 1986, ANALYSIS OF THE U. In addition, this region is flanked by two important oil provinces—the Prudhoe Bay area to the west and the Mackenzie delta to the east. To begin to understand the petroleum resource potential of ANWR, we evaluated the source rock quality and thermal maturity of five rock units ranging in age from Triassic to early Tertiary: Shublik Formation, Kingak Shale, pebble shale unit, Hue Shale and Canning Shale. We also compared ANWR oils using stable carbon isotope ratios, tricyclic terpane ratios, and saturate/aromatic hydrocarbon ratios.</span></p><p><span>The organic carbon content of the five rock units range from an average of 1.6 to 4.0 wt%. Cretaceous rocks from the coastal plain are thermally immature (vitrinite reflectance &lt;0.5%) and in the southern mountains thermally mature to overmature (vitrinite reflectance 1.0–1.8%). In general, type III organic matter predominates in the Kingak Shale, pebble shale unit, and Canning Shale, and types II and III in the Hue Shale.</span></p><p><span>ANWR oils are divided into three groups: (1) Jago oil type, includes oils from Angun Point, Katakturuk River and Jago River; (2) Manning oil type, from Manning Point near the coast of the Beaufort Sea; and (3) Kavik oil type, from Kavik west of the Canning River. None of the three oil types of ANWR compares favorably with the economically important oils from Prudhoe Bay and the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska (NPRA). The most promising source rock for the otherd ANWR oil types could not be type II units of the Hue Shale. The isotopic compositions indicate that the brines are genetically related and that they probably originated from the evaporation of paleo-ocean waters. Although highly variable in solute contents, the brines have rather uniform isotopic compositions. The stable isotope compositions of brine from the ERDA No. 6 site (826.3 m depth) and fluid inclusions from the ERDA No. 9 site are variable but remarkably regular and show that (1) mixing with old or modern meteoric waters has occurred, the extent of mixing apparently decreasing with depth, and (2) water in the ERDA No. 6 brine may have originated from the dehydration of gypsum. Alternatively, the data may reflect simple evaporation of meteoric water on a previously dry marine flat. Stable isotope compositions of all the waters analyzed indicate that there has been fairly extensive mixing with ground water throughout the area, but that no significant circulation has occurred. The conclusions bear importantly on the suitability of these salt beds and others as repositories for nuclear waste.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation Specifically, their distribution and spread in North America; their life cycle, productive and reproductive potential; and their ecosystem relationships are reviewed. Hopefully this review will improve a manager's ability to deal with aquatic nuisance problems. It also provides suggestions for basic research needed to develop more effective management practices. It was found that all three species possess a number of adaptations, including an ability to rapidly propagate vegetatively, an opportunistic nature for obtaining nutrients, a life cycle that favors cool weather, and a number of mechanisms which enhance photosynthetic efficiency, which allow them to proliferate. These three species do provide benefits to the ecosystem through their roles in materials cycling and energy flow. Therefore, management of these species should take an integrated approach which recognizes these benefits. The life history information available about the three species varies tremendously; however, a better understanding of resource gain and allocation is needed to manage all three species. Specifically, more research is needed to provide a better understanding of: 1) the role bicarbonate plays in photosynthesis, 2) the role roots play in supplying CO2 to the plabts, 3) resource accumulation and allocation under different temperature and light regimes, 4) resource allocation on a seasonal basis, and 5) nutrient cycling under different management regimes. ?? 1986 Dr W. C. area are associated with reactivated Triassic(? ) basin boundary extensional fault zones. The Gants-Cooke fault zone associated with the Jedburg basin in the 1886 meizoseismal area, an unnamed fault along the margin of the Branchville basin in the Bowman earthquake area and the offshore Helena Banks fault zone (no observed seismicity) along the margin of the Kiawah basin show evidence of reactivation of Triassic(? ) normal faults zones in a compressional, probably strike slip sense. The previously reported reverse separation of these faults observed on the seismic profiles in the late Cretaceous-Cenozoic Coastal Plain sediments is possibly produced by oblique slip with the horizontal component possibly 10 to 100 times the vertical. Earthquake recurrence intervals of several thousand years reported in the Charleston area appear consistent with ranges of magnitude of strike slip displacement inferred from the seismic reflection data, and are constrained by aeromagnetic data.","conferenceTitle":"Proceedings of the Third U. A method for simulating these flood hydrographs at urban and rural ungauged sites in Georgia is presented. The O'Donnell method was used to compute unit hydrographs from 355 flood events from 80 stations. An average unit hydrograph and an average lag time were computed for each station. These average unit hydrographs were transformed to unit hydrographs having durations of one-fourth, one-third, one-half, and three-fourths lag time and then reduced to dimensionless terms by dividing the time by lag time and the discharge by peak discharge. Hydrographs were simulated for these 355 flood events and their widths were compared with the widths of the observed hydrographs at 50 and 75 percent of peak flow. For simulating hydrographs at sites larger than 500 mi**2, the U. S. Geological Survey computer model CONROUT can be used.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transportation Research Record","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"03611981","usgsCitation":"Inman, E.J., and Armbruster, J., 1986, SIMULATION OF FLOOD HYDROGRAPHS FOR GEORGIA STREAMS.: Transportation Research Record, p. 15-23.","startPage":"15","endPage":"23","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224135,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505aaf57e4b0c8380cd87534","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Inman, E. Part 1: Rock-Eval pyrolysis and vitrinite reflectance","docAbstract":"<p>Detailed organic geochemistry has been performed on a large number of Lower Mississippian-Upper Devonian Bakken shales from the North Dakota portion of the Williston Basin, and 28 oils mainly from Mississippian Madison Group rocks from different basinal areas. Here we report results of Rock-Eval pyrolysis and vitrinite reflectance (<i>R<sub>o</sub></i>) analyses. Variable paleoheat flows in the Williston Basin caused the threshold of intense hydrocarbon generation to occur at different depths in different basinal areas. In higher paleogeothermal gradient basinal areas, this event occurred at depths of 7,650-8,000 ft, and at 10,000 ft or deeper in lower paleogeothermal gradient areas of the Basin. Distinct organic metamorphic imprints in Williston Basin sediments were also caused by extreme, but variable, paleoheat flows in the basin, as well as secondary migration of crude oils from deep basinal source areas. The high paleoheat flows are postulated as being due to a Late Cretaceous - Paleocene aborted rift event. Only a small volume of Bakken shales in restricted areas of the Williston Basin was responsible for the oil found reservoired in Mississippian Madison Group rocks. However, this small shale volume has been responsible for a relatively large amount of crude oil. </p><p><i>R<sub>o</sub></i> profiles in the Tertiary through Middle Jurassic rocks in the Williston Basin had steep, linear <i>R<sub>o</sub></i> versus depth gradients, with strong reversals of <i>R<sub>o</sub></i> values occurring in the Lower Jurassic rocks. The lower Mesozoic through Paleozoic rocks of the Basin had strongly suppressed <i>R<sub>o</sub></i> values compared to the values in the Tertiary through Middle Jurassic rocks. This was especially true of the <i>R<sub>o</sub></i> values in the Bakken shales. This <i>R<sub>o</sub></i> suppression was due to a change in organic matter (OM) type from oxygen-rich terrestrially derived OM in the younger rocks, to a hydrogen-rich marine derived OM in the deeper, older rocks. The threshold of intense oil generation (TIHG) occurred in the Bakken shales of the Williston Basin at <i>R<sub>o</sub></i> values somewhere between 0.9 and 1.7% (best estimate 0.9), as would be read in oxygen-rich OM. Much higher burial temperatures (and consequently <i>R<sub>o</sub></i> values) than usually held to be necessary were required for both the TIHG as well as mainstage hydrocarbon generation in the Bakken shales. These results are most likely applicable in general to source rocks with hydrogen-rich OM. The data of this study have major implications to petroleum exploration as well as to petroleum resource assessment.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.1747-5457.1986.tb00378.x","issn":"01416421","usgsCitation":"Price, L., Daws, T., and Pawlewicz, M., 1986, Organic metamorphism in the Lower Mississippian-Upper Devonian Bakken shales. The most striking feature in the unit maps is a strong hemispheric asymmetry. It is seen most clearly in the ultraviolet/violet albedo ratio image, because the asymmetry becomes more intense as the wavelength decreases. It appears as if the surface has been darkened, most intensely in the center of the trailing hemisphere and decreasing gradually, essentially as the cosine of the angle from the antapex of motion, to a minimum in the center of the leading hemisphere. The cosine pattern suggests that the darkening is exogenic in origin and is interpreted as evidence of alteration of the surface by ion bombardment from the Jovian magnetosphere.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0019-1035(86)90068-0","usgsCitation":"Nelson, M., McCord, T.B., Clark, R.N., Johnson, T.V., Matson, D.L., Mosher, J.A., and Soderblom, L.A., 1986, Europa: Characterization and interpretation of global spectral surface units: Icarus, v. 65, no. 1, p. 129-151, https://doi.org/10.1016/0019-1035(86)90068-0.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"129","endPage":"151","numberOfPages":"23","costCenters":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":223913,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Europa","volume":"65","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0bcee4b0c8380cd528ae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, M. These sand blows extend far beyond 1886 earthquake induced sand blows, in sediments having approximately the same liquefaction susceptibility. The seismic source zone for the prehistoric sand blows is unknown. The different distributions of prehistoric and 1886 sand blows have two possible explanations: (1) moderate to strong earthquakes originated in different seismic source locations through time or (2) at least one earthquake much stronger than the 1886 event also originated from the same seismic source as the 1886 earthquake.","conferenceTitle":"Proceedings of the Third U. His interpretation of the area between Castle and Hardpan transverse faults is identical to mine of 1941. Subsequent detailed mapping has shown that the structure between the transverse faults is more complicated than originally envisioned and resurrected by Blackstone. The present paper describes and discusses geologic features that are the basis for my interpretations; also discussed are differences between my interpretations and those of Blackstone. Most data are shown on the geologic map of the Wapiti Quadrangle (Pierce and Nelson, 1969). Blackstone's 'allochthonous' masses are part of the South Form fault. Occurrences of Sundance Formation, which he interpreted as the upper plate of his 'North Fork fault', are related to Heart Mountain fault. Volcaniclastic rocks south of Jim Mountain mapped as Aycross Formation by Torres and Gingerich may be Cathedral Cliffs Formation, emplaced by movement of the Heart Mountain fault. - Author","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to Geology - University of Wyoming, Laramie","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Pierce, W.G., 1986, The South Fork detachment fault, Park County, Wyoming: discussion and reply ( USA).: Contributions to Geology - University of Wyoming, Laramie, v. 24, no. 1, p. 77-90.","startPage":"77","endPage":"90","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":225390,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"24","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505ba8f9e4b08c986b321f96","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pierce, W. Injection was into a high chloride water aquifer at six sites, and into a high sulfate water aquifer at the seventh. Recovery efficiency has ranged from 0 to 75 percent in high chloride water aquifers, and has exceeded 100 percent in the high sulfate water aquifer. Computer modeling techniques were used to examine the geohydrologic, design, and management factors governing the recovery efficiency of subsurface freshwater storage. The modeling approach permitted many combinations of geohydrologic and operational conditions to be studied at relatively low cost.","conferenceTitle":"Water Forum '86: World Water Issues in Evolution, Proceedings of the Conference.","conferenceLocation":"Long Beach, CA, USA","language":"English","publisher":"ASCE","publisherLocation":"New York, NY, USA","isbn":"0872625451","usgsCitation":"Merritt, M.L., 1986, RECOVERY OF FRESHWATER STORED IN SALINE AQUIFERS IN PENINSULAR FLORIDA., Water Forum '86: World Water Issues in Evolution, Proceedings of the Conference., Long Beach, CA, USA, p. 251-260.","startPage":"251","endPage":"260","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224131,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a9336e4b0c8380cd80c99","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Merritt, Michael L.","contributorId":29392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Merritt","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370104,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The trends are characterized by increasing H2O and decreasing CO2 and sulfur. Maximum fumarole temperatures also show a linear decrease during this period. High-temperature fumarole gases collected from the crater and dome between September 1980 and July 1982 are all H2O-rich (> 90%) with 1-10% CO2 and small amounts of H2S, SO2, H2, CO, HC, and HF. Trace amounts of COS and S2 are present, and occasional observations of minor CH4 appear to result from contamination or low-temperature reactions in sample vessels. The O2 fugacities of the gases remain near Ni-NiO during cooling. The low sulfur content of the gases obviates the need for extensive gas-rock oxygen exchange to maintain fO2's near Ni-NiO. A detailed thermodynamic analysis of 50 gas samples collected between September 1980 and December 1981 led to improved compositions for 22 samples. The gases were initially in a state of equilibrium, but disequilibrium modifications from atmospheric oxidation of H2 and, to a lesser extent, CO occurred within the upper portions of the fumarole vents. The last temperatures of equilibrium for the fumarole gases range from 800??C to 650??C and are nearly always higher than the collection temperatures. No evidence was found of disequilibrium admixture of surface waters; if such modifications of the fumarole gases occurred, the water must have been added at depth and have reequilibrated with the other gas species at magmatic or near-magmatic temperatures. The highest quality analytical data are obtained by field gas chromatograph measurements and from caustic soda bottle samples. Samples collected in evacuated bottles or by pumping through double stopcock tubes tend to be severely deficient in sulfur due to post-collection reactions between H2S and SO2. It is also necessary to infer the water content of the latter samples. ?? 1986.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"03770273","usgsCitation":"Gerlach, T., and Casadevall, T.J., 1986, Evaluation of gas data from high-temperature fumaroles at Mount St. Helens, 1980-1982: Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, v. 28, no. 1-2, p. 107-140.","startPage":"107","endPage":"140","numberOfPages":"34","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223580,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"28","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0c77e4b0c8380cd52b6f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gerlach, T.M.","contributorId":38713,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gerlach","given":"T.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370007,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Casadevall, T.
