The model predicts salmonid survival as a function of number and distribution of northern squawfish, number and timing of juvenile salmonids entering the reservoir, salmonid residence time, water temperature, and flow. The model predicted survival similar to independent estimates for 1983–1986 and also approximated differences among areas and months. Uncertainty analyses showed that the number of salmonids surviving predation may vary ±5% with normal annual variation in predator number, temperature, and flow. Survival in 1983–1986 was near the average predicted from 30 years of historic environmental data. Sensitivity analyses implied that the best avenues ofreducing predation are to reduce the number of northern squawfish, pass salmonids earlier in the year, and maintain sizes of runs of juvenile salmonids at or above present levels. Survival of salmonids, as simulated by the model, is weakly affected by changes in predator distribution, changes in predator consumption rate near the upstream dam, residence time, or flow.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8675(1990)010<0290:MIOAMO>2.3.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Beamesderfer, R.C., Rieman, B.E., Bledsoe, L.J., and Vigg, S., 1990, Management implications of a model of predation by a resident fish on juvenile salmonids migrating through a Columbia River reservoir: North American Journal of Fisheries Management, v. 10, no. 3, p. 290-304, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8675(1990)010<0290:MIOAMO>2.3.CO;2.","productDescription":"15 p. Both PSD and Wr varied spatially and monthly in all years examined. On an annual basis, PSD varied at one area but not at the other, whereas Wr showed little variation. Possible explanations for the variation in PSD and Wr are differences in growth, mortality, recruitment, and exploitation. Our data suggested that regulations established or changed on a reservoir-wide basis may have different effects on the fishery, depending on location in the reservoir. Also, pooling data from various areas within a reservoir to yield point estimates of structural indices may not represent the variation present in the population as a whole. The significant temporal variability reflects the importance of determining the proper time to sample fish to yield representative estimates of the variable of interest. In areas with valuable fisheries or markedly different population structures, we suggest that an area-specific approach be made to reservoir fishery management, and that efforts be made toward effecting consistent harvest regulations in interstate waters.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/02705060.1990.9665246","usgsCitation":"Mesa, M.G., Duke, S., and Ward, D.L., 1990, Spatial and temporal variation in proportional stock density and relative weight of smallmouth bass in a reservoir: Journal of Freshwater Ecology, v. 5, no. 3, p. 323-339, https://doi.org/10.1080/02705060.1990.9665246.","productDescription":"17 p. In each study, fish were exposed to a mixture of boron, molybdenum, selenate, and selenite in the proportions found in subsurface agricultural drainage water in the basin of the San Joaquin Valley, California. Tests were conducted in well water and in site-specific fresh and brackish waters. No boron or molybdenum was detected in fish exposed to concentrations as high as 6,046 μg boron/L and 193 μg molybdenum/L for 90 d in well water or fresh water; however, whole-body concentrations of selenium increased with increasing exposure concentrations in well water and fresh water, but not in brackish water. Concentrations of selenium in chinook salmon were strongly correlated with reduced survival and growth of fish in well water and with reduced survival in a 15-d seawater challenge test of fish from fresh water. Concentrations of selenium in fish seemed to reach a steady state after 60 d of exposure in well water or fresh water. Fish in brackish water had only background concentrations of selenium after 60 d of exposure, and no effects on survival and growth in brackish water or on survival in a 10-d seawater challenge test were exhibited. This lack of effect in brackish water was attributed to initiation of the study with advanced fry, which were apparently better able to metabolize the trace element mixture than were the younger fish used in studies with well water and fresh water. In all three experimental waters, concentration factors (whole-body concentration/waterborne concentration) for selenium decreased with increasing exposure concentrations, suggesting decreased uptake or increased excretion, or both, of selenium at the higher concentrations.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1990)119<0500:COBMAS>2.3.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Hamilton, S., and Wiedmeyer, R.H., 1990, Concentrations of boron, molybdenum, and selenium in chinook salmon: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 119, no. 3, p. 500-510, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1990)119<0500:COBMAS>2.3.CO;2.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"500","endPage":"510","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":330843,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"119","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5821a0e0e4b02f1a881de98e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hamilton, Steven J.","contributorId":174108,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hamilton","given":"Steven J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":653244,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wiedmeyer, Raymond H.","contributorId":176717,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wiedmeyer","given":"Raymond","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":653245,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Increases in body mass averaged 550 and 681 g among female and male G. c. canadensis, respectively, and 616 and 836 g among female and male G. c. rowani. Reliability of the entire system was generally high. Data were received from instrumented caribou (Rangifer tarandus) during 91% of 318 possible transmitter-months. Transmitters failed prematurely on 5 of 45 caribou, 2 of 6 muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus), and 1 of 2 gray wolves (Canis lupus). Failure rates were considerably higher for polar (Ursus maritimus) and brown (U. arctos) bears than for caribou (Rangifer tarandus). Efficiency of gathering both locational and sensor data was related to both latitude and topography.

Mean error of locations was estimated to be 954 m (median = 543 m) for transmitters on captive animals; 90% of locations were <1,732 m from the true location. Argos's new location class zero processing provided many more locations than normal processing, but mean location error was much higher than locations estimated normally. Locations were biased when animals were at elevations other than those used in Argos's calculations.

Long-term and short-term indices of animal activity were developed and evaluated. For several species, the long-term index was correlated with movement patterns and the short-term index was calibrated to specific activity categories (e.g., lying, feeding, walking).

Data processing and sampling considerations were evaluated. Algorithms for choosing the most reliable among a series of reported locations were investigated. All values for contaminant residues were measured and reported as μg/g of whole fish, wet weight; the error limits represented the 95% confidence interval half widths. Total DDT content declined 87%, from 9.9 in 1970, when its use was banned, to 1.3 in 1974, and then averaged 0.88 in 1978–1986 with a low of 0.67 in 1986. Between 1976–1986, p,p’DDD averaged 0.08 and p,p’DDT averaged 0.1; p,p’DDE reached a low of 0.48 in 1980, then averaged 0.53 in 1980–1986. Dieldrin averaged 0.25 until 1974, when it was banned, peaked at 0.55 in 1978, and decreased to 0.20 by 1986. PCBs, first analyzed in 1972, declined 64% (from 5.7 to 2.2) between 1972 and 1980 and were at 1.64 in 1986. The great decline in PCBs occurred following the 1976 ban. A 49% decrease in the lipid content of bloaters from 1980 to 1986 suggested a dietary change possibly due to changing food source makeup.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0380-1330(90)71403-7","usgsCitation":"Hesselberg, R.J., Hickey, J.P., Nortrup, D.A., and Willford, W.A., 1990, Contaminant residues in the bloater (Coregonus hoyi) of Lake Michigan, 1969-1986: Journal of Great Lakes Research, v. 16, no. 1, p. 121-129, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0380-1330(90)71403-7.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"121","endPage":"129","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133240,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"16","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b12e4b07f02db6a27aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hesselberg, Robert J.","contributorId":36074,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hesselberg","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308838,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hickey, James P.","contributorId":83460,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hickey","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nortrup, David A.","contributorId":34882,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nortrup","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308837,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Willford, Wayne A.","contributorId":67446,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Willford","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308839,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Complete shifts of up to 16 days were recorded; the average shift in mid-incubation was 4–6 days. Mean shift length was inversely correlated with hatching success in 5 years, suggesting that Fulmars adjusted their foraging patterns to annual differences in food availability. Males assumed the larger share (55%) of incubation on average, and a larger share in years with lower hatching success. Serial correlation in the length of incubation shifts had two components - the influence of prior shift lengths on time spent foraging and individual variation. Failure of the male to relieve the female soon after laying resulted in a few breeding failures and egg losses were associated with exceptionally long shifts throughout incubation.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.1474-919X.1990.tb00275.x","usgsCitation":"Hatch, S.A., 1990, Incubation rhythm in the Fulmar Fulmarus glacialis: Annual variation and sex roles: Ibis, v. 132, no. 4, p. 515-524, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1474-919X.1990.tb00275.x.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"515","endPage":"524","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":336236,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Semidi Islands","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156.94793701171872,\n              55.94304778489654\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.544189453125,\n              55.94304778489654\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.544189453125,\n              56.28148552616123\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.94793701171872,\n              56.28148552616123\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.94793701171872,\n              55.94304778489654\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"132","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2008-04-03","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58b15446e4b01ccd54fc5eeb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hatch, Scott A. 0000-0002-0064-8187 shatch@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0064-8187","contributorId":2625,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hatch","given":"Scott","email":"shatch@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":672556,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Estimates suggest that populations of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were not significantly related (P > 0.05) to tillage practice or to the presence of winter rye cover crops. Late summer differences in animal mass and movement, and in the proportion of reproductively inactive animals imply that characteristics of individuals and reproductive activity can be affected by tillage practices and winter cover crops. The presence of granular carbofuran had no apparent effect on populations, body mass, or movement in conventionally tilled or no-till fields. Similarly, neither red blood cell acetylcholinesterase, hematocrit, nor liver function were affected by carbofuran use. C.A. Agardh forest located off San Nicolas Island, California. Giant kelp was the largest and most conspicuous species that overgrew large patches of the substrata; overgrowth among turf organisms also appeared common. To determine the effects of giant kelp holdfasts on crustose coralline algae and other turf organisms, “artificial holdfasts” were placed on 0.125-m2 plots for 5, 8 and 12 months. In these treatments, 50–57% of the crustose coralline algae survived. Because these algae also recruited while covered, the total cover (survivorship plus recruitment) differed by only 7–26% from that sampled at the start of the study. The decline of these algae in control plots was similar to that in the treatment plots mostly because of overgrowth by sessile invertebrates. Bryozoans increased markedly on the control plots, whereas 0–12% survived in the treatment plots. Bryozoans and sponges also recruited under the artificial holdfasts. Some arborescent turf algae survived in the 5- and 8-month treatments; articulated coralline algae survived better than did foliose algae. High survival recruitment of crustose coralline algae while overgrown contributed to their prevalence in benthic communities.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0022-0981(90)90120-2","usgsCitation":"Miles, A., and Meslow, E.C., 1990, Effects of experimental overgrowth on survival and change in the turf assemblage of a giant kelp forest: Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, v. 135, p. 229-242, https://doi.org/10.1016/0022-0981(90)90120-2.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"229","endPage":"242","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130222,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"135","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2ee4b07f02db615aad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miles, A.K. 0000-0002-3108-808X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3108-808X","contributorId":85902,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miles","given":"A.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315698,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Meslow, E. Overall survival for the 60-day prefledging period was 0.3951, and 87% of all duckling losses occurred within the first 18 days. Survival through the Class I interval (0.4664) was lower (P < 0.05) than through Class II (0.8887) and Class III (0.9531). Total brood loss occurred among 37% of the females and accounted for 60% of all duckling losses. Broods that survived to fledging averaged 5.0 ducklings. The 60-day survival probability (0.4417) of ducklings in broods that hatched early (on or before 10 Jun) was higher (P < 0.05) than survival of late broods (0.3324).
