Residues (geometric means, wet weight) of DDE (0.58 and 0.59 ppm) in eggs from Colville Island and Protection Island were lower than from other locations in the Pacific Northwest, while PCBs (2.19 and 1.37 ppm) were similar to those at most locations. Both contaminants in 1984 were below levels associated with reproductive problems. Eggs also contained concentrations of mercury (0.26 and 0.27 ppm) and selenium (0.31 and 0.28 ppm) below levels associated with reproductive problems. The distribution of nesting colonies in the study area changed dramatically since 1984. The cormorants were most likely responding to increased human disturbance in the San Juan Islands, coupled to additional protection and reduced human activity on Protection and Smith Islands. This presumably led to the abandonment of all nesting islands in the San Juans. The nesting population in the study area in 1988 (all on Protection and Smith Islands) was the highest recorded.","language":"English","publisher":"Waterbird Society","doi":"10.2307/1521341","usgsCitation":"Henny, C.J., Blus, L.J., Thompson, S., and Wilson, U., 1989, Environmental contaminants, human disturbance and nesting of double-crested cormorants in northwestern Washington: Colonial Waterbirds, v. 12, no. 2, p. 198-206, https://doi.org/10.2307/1521341.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"198","endPage":"206","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197446,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"12","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6aec87","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Henny, Charles J.","contributorId":12578,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Henny","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":336085,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Blus, L. Plasma ChE activity of control females increased consistently during 28 days of storage while both carbamate- and cidrotophos-inhibited ChE decreased.  Refrigeration of plasma at 4?C for 2 days had little effect of ChE activity.  Plasma ChE activity was averaged about 34% higher in breeding males than in females. To relate levels in the different tissues used for regulatory and monitoring purposes and for biological assessments, we exposed American black ducks to mixtures of three organochlorines.  Differences in residue burdens among tissues were not statistically significant when levels were expressed on a lipid weight basis.  Levels of heptachlor and Aroclor 1254 in one tissue can be accurately predicted from those in another; such predictions for endrin are less reliable.  Lipid weight based residue concentrations in wings may be used to predict whether levels in fat exceed residue standards set for human health or approach those associated with effects on populations of species sampled.","largerWorkTitle":"","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF00398732","usgsCitation":"Haseltine, S.D., Hall, R.J., and Geissler, P.H., 1989, Monitoring contaminant exposure:  Relative concentrations of organochlorines in three tissues of American black ducks: Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, v. 13, no. 1, p. 11-19, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00398732.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"11","endPage":"19","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197536,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"13","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db69915d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Haseltine, Susan D.","contributorId":76837,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haseltine","given":"Susan","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335977,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hall, Russell James","contributorId":44602,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hall","given":"Russell","email":"","middleInitial":"James","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335976,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Geissler, Paul H.","contributorId":33746,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Geissler","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335975,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Brain ChE activity in the young of altricial species increase with age; however, this relationship has only been demonstrated in the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris).  Brain ChE activity of nestling great egrets (Casmerodius albus) collected from a colony in Texas increased significantly with age and did not differ among individuals from different nests.  Brain ChE activity of nestling snowy egrets (Egretta thula) and black-crowned night -herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) collected in one colony each from Rhode Island, Texas, and California also increased significantly with age and did not differ among individuals from different nests or colonies.  This study further demonstrates that age must be considered when evaluating exposure of nestling altricial birds to ChE inhibitors.","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Association","doi":"10.7589/0090-3558-25.3.359","usgsCitation":"Custer, T., and Ohlendorf, H.M., 1989, Brain cholinesterase activity of nestling great egrets, snowy egrets, and black-crowned night-herons: Journal of Wildlife Diseases, v. 25, no. 3, p. 359-363, https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-25.3.359.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"359","endPage":"363","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":479865,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-25.3.359","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":193891,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"25","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fce19","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Custer, T. Centrolenella azulae is distinguished by its moderately large size, the presence of vomerine teeth, a snout truncate in dorsal view and slightly protruding in profile, a color pattern in preservative of very diffuse lavender with small colorless spots, basal webbing on the outer fingers, and a low ulnar fold. Centrolenella puyoensis is distinguished by its moderately large size, a snout truncate in dorsal view and rounded in profile, a color pattern in preservative of purplish-gray with large cream spots, a tympanum that is three-fourths exposed, and intricate anal ornamentation. Both new species are closely related to the Peruvian C. mariae, and together the three species form the C. mariae group, definable on a number of shared, derived characters. A hypothesis of relationships within the mariae group is presented, postulating puyoensis as the most primitive and azulae as the most derived of the trio.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Herpetologica","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Flores, G., and McDiarmid, R., 1989, Two new species of South American Centrorlenella (Anura: Centrolenidae) related to C. Surveys were conducted in uncut (control) and clear-cut (treatment) plots in three stand types: conifer, hardwood, and mixed growth.  We used a mark-recapture model and its associated jackknife species richness estimator (N), as an indicator of avian community structure.  Increases in estimated richness (N) and Shannon - Weaver diversity (H') were noted in the treated hardwood and mixed growth, but not in the conifer stands.  Seventeen avian species increased in relative abundance, whereas two species declined.  Stand treatment was associated with important changes in bird species composition.  Increased habitat patchiness and the creation of forest edge are hypothesized as causes for the greater estimates of richness and diversity.","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Results are compared with those from studies of other subspecies.   Because the species occurs in temperate, subtropical, and tropical habitats from Mexico south to Paraguay, northern Argentina, and southeastern Brazil, we expected details of breeding to differ in different parts of the range. Tests on captive African stocks have shown that females reject eggs of other cohorts if such eggs are sufficiently different. The Village Weaver may have evolved rejection behavior and variable eggs in response to cuckoo parasitism in Africa. The Village Weaver was introduced into Hispaniola from Africa as early as the 18th century. Before the arrival of the Shiny Cowbird (</span><i>Molothrus bonariensis</i><span>) in the early 1970's, there were no brood parasites on Hispaniola. Furthermore, in an experimental parasitism study, Hispaniolan Village Weavers accepted both dummy eggs and dissimilar Village Weaver eggs. The Village Weaver may have decreased the egg‐rejection behavior in the absence of the selective pressure of brood parasitism. Now Hispaniolan populations of the Village Weaver are parasitized by the Shiny Cowbird, which lays eggs dissimilar to those of the weaver. Brood parasitism by the Shiny Cowbird exerts a detrimental impact on the Village Weaver by reducing nest success and productivity.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.1111/j.1558-5646.1989.tb04206.x","usgsCitation":"Cruz, A., and Wiley, J.W., 1989, The decline of an adaptation in the absence of a presumed selection pressure: Evolution, v. 43, no. 1, p. 55-62, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1558-5646.1989.tb04206.x.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"55","endPage":"62","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193553,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"43","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-05-31","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4eb7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cruz, A.","contributorId":89993,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cruz","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331158,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wiley, James W.","contributorId":39886,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiley","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331157,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
