We performed a prestack migration of a Shell multichannel seismic profile, that crosses this area, and examined it in the light of this unusually diverse Kaiko dataset. Unlike the frontal structure of the northern Japan trench, where mass-wasting appears to be the dominant tectonic process, the margin in front of the Daiichi-Kashima shows indentation, imbrication, uplift and erosion. Emplacement of the front one-third of the seamount beneath the margin front occurs without accretion. Six operating parameters used for the high-voltage spark and argon-ICP combination are established by sequential simplex optimization of both signal-to-background ratio and signal-to-noise ratio. The time-dependences of the atomic emission signals of analytes and matrix elements ablated from a finely pulverized sample embedded in a pressed disk of copper demonstrate selective sampling by the spark. Concentration ratios of hafnium to zirconium in zircons are measured with a precision of 4% (relative standard deviation, RSD). For ferromanganese nodules, spectral measurements based on intensity ratios of analyte line to the Mn(II) 257.610 nm line provide precisions of analysis in the range from 7 to 14% RSD. Two ultrafine coal samples, the Illinois No. 5 (Springfield) and Pittsburgh No. 8, have been evaluated with various reagent types in order to derive the rate constants for coal (k</span><sub>c</sub><span>), ash (k</span><sub>a</sub><span>), and pyrite (k</span><sub>c</sub><span>). Pine oil, a mixture of terpene alcohols and hydrocarbons, was an exception to this finding; it exhibited higher rate constants than the pure aliphatic alcohols or other pure anionic surfactants studied; this may be explained by the fact that the sample of pine oil used (70% alpha-terpineol) acted as a frother/collector system similar to alcohol/kerosene. The separation efficiencies of ash and pyrite from coal, as evidenced by the ratios of k<sub>c</sub>/k<sub>a</sub>&nbsp;or k<sub>c</sub>/k<sub>p</sub>, tend to indicate, however, that commercially available surfactant—alcohol mixtures are not as selective as pure alcohols such as 2-ethyl-1-hexanol or methylisobutylcarbinol.</span></p><p><span>Some distinct differences in various rate constants, or their ratios, were noted between the two coals studied, and are possibly attributable to surface chemistry effects.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0032-5910(89)80061-0","issn":"00325910","usgsCitation":"Read, R., Camp, L., Summers, M., and Rapp, D., 1989, The influence of reagent type on the kinetics of ultrafine coal flotation: Powder Technology, v. 59, no. 3, p. 153-162, https://doi.org/10.1016/0032-5910(89)80061-0.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"153","endPage":"162","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223295,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"59","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bad35e4b08c986b323a60","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Read, R.B.","contributorId":31119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Read","given":"R.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":372334,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Camp, L.R.","contributorId":108235,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Camp","given":"L.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":372337,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Summers, M.S.","contributorId":47087,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Summers","given":"M.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":372335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Rapp, D.M.","contributorId":105439,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rapp","given":"D.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":372336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Hualalai's diffuse north-trending rift zone, marked by the large trachyte cone of Puu Waawaa and several basaltic spatter cones, is located mainly in the southwestern part of the quadrangle. Several Hualalai flows originated in the Hualalai quadrangle, crossed the Puu Anahulu quadrangle, and terminated in the Kiholo quadrangle. Hualalai flows cover most of the western half of the quadrangle and are interlayered with Mauna Loa lavas along a 2-kilometer-wide strip from southeast to northwest across the middle of the Puu Anahulu quadrangle. Mauna Loa flows cover most of the eastern half. Mauna Kea flows are restricted to the northeastern corner, where they underlie Hualalai and Mauna Loa lavas. A few extensive and relatively young flows from Hualalai and Mauna Loa cover most of the quadrangle; thus, the older units are generally small in area. The oldest units in the quadrangle are the trachyte cone of Puu Waawaa and its flow, which includes Puu Anahulu, covers about 7 percent of the quadrangle. Basaltic lavas of Hualalai range in age from latest Pleistocene to less than 2,000 years. Pleistocene lavas cover about 5 percent of this quadrangle, lavas that are 5,000 - 10,000 years old cover about 5 percent, lavas that are 3,000 - 5,000 years old cover about 3 percent, and three extensive flows that are 1,500 - 3,000 years old cover about 25 percent. The oldest Mauna Loa flows, that are probably 5,000 - 10,000 years old, cover about 2 percent of this quadrangle, flows that are 3,000 - 5,000 years old cover about 18 percent, six extensive flows that are 1,500 - 3,000 years old cover about 23 percent, and the 1859 flow, that is the youngest volcanic unit, and covers about 10 percent of its area. Two hawaiite flows from Mauna Kea, that are late Pleistocene in age, cover about 2 percent of the quadrangle.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr89284","usgsCitation":"Moore, R.B., Clague, D.A., Bohrson, W.A., and Wise, W.S., 1989, Preliminary geologic map of the Puu Anahulu quadrangle, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 89-284, Report: 19 p.; 2 Plates: 24.50 x 30.59 inches and 40.74 x 21.52 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr89284.","productDescription":"Report: 19 p.; 2 Plates: 24.50 x 30.59 inches and 40.74 x 21.52 inches","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":397619,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_18942.htm"},{"id":46689,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1989/0284/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":46690,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1989/0284/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":149262,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1989/0284/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46691,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1989/0284/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Puu Anahulu quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -155.875,\n 19.75\n ],\n [\n -155.75,\n 19.75\n ],\n [\n -155.75,\n 19.875\n ],\n [\n -155.875,\n 19.875\n ],\n [\n -155.875,\n 19.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67ad82","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, Richard B. rmoore@usgs.gov","contributorId":1464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Richard","email":"rmoore@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":405,"text":"NH/VT office of New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":176760,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Clague, David A.","contributorId":77105,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Clague","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":176761,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bohrson, Wendy A.","contributorId":55024,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bohrson","given":"Wendy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":176763,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Wise, W. The main features of the SEI system were (1) a digital recorder with an instantaneous-floating-point-gain constant of 24 dB, (2) a 64-channel hydrophone streamer, 3,200 m long, and (3) a 21-airgun array that had a total volume of 2,000 in and a pressure of 2,000 psi. Sampling interval was array to the center of the farthest phone group was 3,338 m and to the nearest phone group, 188 m. Shot points were 5O m apart to obtain a 32-fold stack. Navigation was by an integrated satellite/Loran/doppler-sonar system.</p><p>The SEI data were processed by Geophysical Data Processing Center, Inc. of Houston, Texas. Processing procedures were standard with the following exceptions: (1) a deringing deconvolution that had a 128-ms operator length was done prior to stacking. (2) a time-variant predictive deconvolution that had a filter operator length of 100 ms and automatic picking of the second zero-crossing was applied after stacking to further suppress multiple energy. (3) Velocity analyses were performed every 3 km, using a technique that included the determination and consideration of both the amount and direction of apparent dip. (4) Automatic gain ranging using a 750-ms window was applied pre- and post-stack. ( 5) Lines affected by sea floor's angle of slope were deconvolved again before stacking and time-variant filter parameters were adjusted to follow the sea-floor geometry.</p><p>The data taken with the 3,200-m streamer and 2,000 in3 airgun array, aboard M/V SEISMIC EXPLORER (Arabic numerals) are vastly superior to those obtained by R/V GYRE using a much smaller streamer and source (Roman numerals). The former consistently show coherent primary events from within the units underlying the Mesozoic section on the western Florida Shelf, while the latter tend to do so only in the inshore area where pre-Mesozoic basement occurs at depths of less than 2 km. The R/V GYRE data were open filed previously (Ball and others, 1987). A synthesis of both sets of data is included in Ball and others (1988).</p><p>Reflectors correlate to the full 8-s duration of recording time. A number of lines were restarted due to equipment failure; no areas were omitted, however, shotpoints overlap. The original records may be seen at the USGS branch of Atlantic marine geology offices in Woods Hole, Mass. Copies of the multichannel data may be purchased only from the National Geophysical Data Center, NOAA, Code E64, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80303 (tel. 303/497-6345).</p>","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Woods Hole, MA","doi":"10.3133/ofr89157","usgsCitation":"Ball, M.M., and Soderberg, N., 1989, Multichannel seismic-reflection profiles collected in 1979 aboard M/V Seismic Explorer on the western Florida shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 89-157, 3 p., map, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr89157.","productDescription":"3 p., map","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":144526,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259680,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1989/0157/ofr1989157.pdf","text":"Report","size":"36.2 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1989-157"}],"contact":"<p><a href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\" data-mce-href=\"https://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/\">Coastal and Marine Geology Program</a><br> U.S. Geological Survey<br> 384 Woods Hole Road<br> Woods Hole, MA 02543</p>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b4883","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ball, M. Samples were collected from 11 sites in the channel and 5 sites in overbank deposits of the Big Lost River, 6 sites in the spreading areas that receive excess flow from the Big Lost River during peak flow conditions, 7 sites in the natural sinks and playas of the Big Lost River, 1 site in the Little Lost River Sink, and 5 sites from other small, isolated closed basins. Eleven samples from the Big Lost River channel deposits had a mean of 1.9 and median of 0.8 weight percent in the less than 0.062 mm fraction. The other 24 samples had a mean of 63.3 and median of 63.7 weight percent for the same size fraction. Mineralogy data are consistent with grain-size data. The Big Lost River channel deposits had mean and median percent mineral abundances of total clays and detrital mica of 10 and 10%, respectively, whereas the remaining 24 samples had mean and median values of 24% and 22.5% , respectively. During 1985, public supply, irrigation, and self-supplied industry required 38% of the 56 ,500 acre-ft of appropriated surface water and 57% of the 187 ,800 acre-ft of appropriated groundwater. If the historic (1920-80) annual population growth rate (2.8%) continues, the 126,100 acre ft of water appropriated for public-water supplies should meet demand until 2015. The quantity of potentially available water supplies was estimated by summing those resources having less than 1.00 mg/L dissolved solids. Surface water resources that meet this criterion are the Little Arkansas and Ninnescah Rivers and Cheney Reservoir. Subtracting legislated minimum streamflows for the rivers from their mean annual streamflow volumes leaves 532,000 acre-ft, which combined with the annual sustained yield of Cheney Reservoir (40,000 acre-ft) provides an estimated 572,000 acre-ft of surface water annually. Groundwater that meets the criterion was estimated by summing the annual precipitation recharge available to unconsolidated deposits in the county (78,400 acre-ft) and in the Harvey County part of the Wichita well field (13,000 acre-ft). Although more groundwater is available, withdrawals exceeding annual precipitation recharge would cause water level declines. Because less than 4% of the potentially available surface water was used for supplies in 1985 and because about 120% of the groundwater recharge was used, surface water resources have a greater potential for meeting future water use demands.
