Dye clouds subjected to increasing and decreasing flow rates (unsteady flow) showed that increasing flows shorten the cloud and decreasing flows lengthen the cloud. After the flow rate was changed and the flow was again steady, traveltime and dispersion characteristics were determined by the new rate of flow. Seven stage/streamflow relations identified the general changes of stream geometry throughout the study reach. Channel cross sections were estimated for model input. Low water and streambed profiles were developed from surveyed water surface elevations and water depths. Forty five fine-grained stream-sediment samples and 45 panned-concentrate samples were collected in the Blood Mountain study area (fig. 1). A.E. Nelson, in conjunction with detailed geologic mapping, collected 13 rock-chip samples for geochemical analysis, in addition to a large number of hand specimins for thin-section study. Analytical solutions compiled from available literature or derived by the author are presented in this report for a variety of boundary condition types and solute-source configurations in one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems with uniform ground-water flow. A set of user-oriented computer programs was created to evaluate these solutions and to display the results in tabular and computer-graphics format. These programs incorporate many features that enhance their accuracy, ease of use, and versatility. Documentation for the programs describes their operation and required input data, and presents the results of sample problems. As part of a regional geochemical reconnaissance, M/ Hurst (University of Georgia) collected 51 fine-grained stream-sediment samples and 45 planned-concentrate samples &nbsp;of alluvial gravels in the Chattahoochee study area (see figure 1). A.E. Nelson, in conjunction with detailed geologic mapping (Nelso, 1983), collected 10 rock-chip samples for geochemical analysis in addition to a large number of hand specimens for thin-section study. In order to evaluate isolated anomalies indicated by the earlier sampling, R.P. Koeppen, D.M. Sutphin, and P.D. Schruben collected several additional panned-concentrate, stream-sediment, and rock samples from the area in 1986. Both the geologic study by Nelson (1983) and this geochemical survey provide the basis for our mineral-resource assessment of the Chattahoochee Roadless Area (Nelson and others, 1983).&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. Daily mean and instantaneous stream discharge data were collected at two U.S. Geological Survey gaging stations. Water-quality data collected from these sites and from one storm-sewer sampling site included nutrients, chemical and biochemical oxygen demands, solids, metals, major anions, other constituents, and pH. Instantaneous loads of selected constituents were computed.\r\n\r\n      Chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, sulfate, alkalinity, chloride, and dissolved solids generally were low in precipitation and runoff. During the November 5, 1980 storm at Pine Road, dissolved nitrate concentrations equaled or exceeded 10 milligrams per liter in 17 percent of the samples analyzed and dissolved ammonia nitrogen concentrations exceeded 2.5 milligrams per liter. Hydrographs for selected wells are included to show trends and lack of trends in water-level changes. The aquifer consists of gravel and sand in flood-plain and terrace deposits of Quaternary age. The aquifer supplies much of the water used for irrigation and aquaculture in eastern Arkansas. A large depression in the potentiometric surface caused by pumping for irrigation and aquaculture occurs in Arkansas, Lonoke, and Prairie Counties. A smaller depression in the potentiometric surface occurs north of Brinkley. Significant water-level declines occurred during the period 1972-80 in several counties west of Crowleys Ridge.
