Focus was placed on determining the distribution and age of plateau-capping basalts, and on mapping the eastern limits of Paleogene marine strata and the western limits of the nonmarine Comondu Formation. The area was also examined for outcrops of pre-Tertiary crystalline rocks, however, none were found.
\n
Mapping was done on aerial photographs and transferred, where possible, to 1:50,000-scale topographic base maps. Areas with roads were field checked; however, in the northeast part of the map area, lack of roads prevented field checks. Previous geologic surveys of parts of the map area were made by horseback in the early 1920's; reports were published by Darton (1921), Heim (1922), and Beal (1948). Subsurface data from petroleum exploration and a geologic map were incorporated in a regional study by Mina (1957). The first radiometric ages of rocks from the map area were published by Gastil and others (1979). Recently determined radiometric ages and chemical analysis of volcanic rocks were reported by Hausback (1984) and by Sawlan and Smith (1984). Our study incorporates geologic mapping with age control based on new radiometric ages as well as paleontology, Flows and tuffs were dated by the K-Ar method. Fossil ages are based on diatom and mollusk assemblages.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1799","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with The Consejo de Recursos Minerales de Patrimonio y Fomento Industrial de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos","usgsCitation":"McLean, H., Hausback, B., and Knapp, J., 1985, Reconnaissance geologic map of part of the San Isidro Quadrangle, Baja California Sur, Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1799, Plate: 50.18 x 36.99 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1799.","productDescription":"Plate: 50.18 x 36.99 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326197,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1799.JPG"},{"id":327352,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1799/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"0","country":"Mexico","state":"Baja California Sur","otherGeospatial":"San Isidro Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -113,26.25 ], [ -113,27 ], [ -112,27 ], [ -112,26.25 ], [ -113,26.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a73e4b07f02db6437bf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McLean, Hugh","contributorId":73977,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McLean","given":"Hugh","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263430,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hausback, B.P.","contributorId":90760,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hausback","given":"B.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263431,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Knapp, J.H.","contributorId":16487,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knapp","given":"J.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":263429,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Penobscot Bay is one of the major embayments along the U.S. Atlantic coast (fig. 1), extending more than 50 km from the Gulf of Maine to the mouth of the Penobscot River. The bay constitutes an area of about 1,100 km\" and is divided into three main passages by numerous islands.
\n
The bay and surrounding coastal area have had a complex history of glaciation and sea-level change since late Wisconsinan time. The last ice sheet advanced across the area about 20,000 years ago, eroding the bedrock surface, removing most older sediments, and isostatically depressing the crust (Schafer and Hartshorn, 1965; Stuiver and Borns, 1975; Thompson, 1979). Deglaciation followed between about 12,700–13,500 years ago and was accompanied by a marine transgression (because of crustal depression), with ice and sea in contact (Stuiver and Borns, 1975; Thompson, 1979, 1982; Smith, 1982). Isostatic recovery of the crust then caused the coast to emerge during the immediate postglacial period, and emergence was completed by about 11,500 years ago (Stuiver and Borns, 1975; Thompson, 1979, 1982; Thompson and Smith, 1983). Finally, resubmergence of the Maine coast has accompanied the Holocene rise of sea level that began about 9,000 to 11,000 years ago (Bloom, 1963; Kaye and Barghoorn, 1964; Schmitker, 1974; Oldale and others, 1983).
\n
In the maps presented here, we illustrate and briefly describe the sea-floor topography, bedrock morphology, and variable sediment thickness within Penobscot Bay that were either produced or modified during the period of geologic change since late Wisconsinan time.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1751","isbn":"0607815787","usgsCitation":"Knebel, H.J., and Scanlon, K.M., 1985, Maps showing sea-floor topography, depth to bedrock, and sediment thickness, Penobscot Bay, Maine: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1751, 2 Plates: 38.42 x 46.41 inches and 37.40 x 27.34 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1751.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 38.42 x 46.41 inches and 37.40 x 27.34 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326208,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1751.JPG"},{"id":327313,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1751/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327314,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1751/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"1","country":"United States","state":"Maine","otherGeospatial":"Penobscot Bay","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -69.08333333333333,44 ], [ -69.08333333333333,44.46666666666667 ], [ -68.66666666666667,44.46666666666667 ], [ -68.66666666666667,44 ], [ -69.08333333333333,44 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db605e8c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knebel, Harley J.","contributorId":25930,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knebel","given":"Harley","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":262870,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Scanlon, Kathryn M.","contributorId":6816,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scanlon","given":"Kathryn","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":262869,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Most previous work on the Cenozoic has focused on the Quaternary surficial deposits and on the outcrops of older rocks at the margins of the valley, although ground-water resource studies of the upper Cenozoic deposits have used subsurface information (for example, Davis and others, 1959; Croft, 1972). One purpose of this report is to show the distribution and stratigraphic relations of Tertiary units under the valley and represents, in part, an attempt to extend correlations from Tertiary units previously recognized in outcrop at the margins of the valley into the subsurface. A second purpose is to depict the structure of the Tertiary rocks by cross sections and by a structure contour map of a middle Tertiary horizon.
\n
The emphasis in this report is on the Tertiary rocks of the northern part of the San Joaquin Valley, although pre-Tertiary stratigraphic units are shown on the cross sections where information was available. They serve to emphasize the discordance between the Neogene and the older units. Correlations of units in the Great Valley sequence (Late Jurassic to earliest Tertiary) are based mostly, with some modification, on the work of Hoffman (1964) and Callaway (1964), although the informal stratigraphic names used by those workers are not applied here.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1761","usgsCitation":"Bartow, J., 1985, Map showing Tertiary stratigraphy and structure of the Northern San Joaquin Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1761, 2 Plates: 56.27 x 36.16 inches and 49.95 x 40.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1761.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 56.27 x 36.16 inches and 49.95 x 40.00 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326207,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1761.JPG"},{"id":327140,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1761/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327141,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1761/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Northern San Joaquin Valley","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -121,37 ], [ -121,38 ], [ -120,38 ], [ -120,37 ], [ -121,37 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a94e4b07f02db6589f3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bartow, J. This gazetteer contains physical and chemical data from 107 surface-mine lakes sampled from June through August 1983. Information collected includes location, morphology, and vertical profile measurements of water quality of the lakes. Sampled lakes range in size from 8.8 to 210 acres, and are from 4.0 to 92.0 feet deep. Maximum widths range from 0.03 to 0.35 mile, and maximum lengths range from 0.27 to 3.08 miles. Some lake waters were stratified, whereas others were completely mixed. General water quality differed widely among the lakes. Specific conductances ranged from 130 to 7,800 micromhos per centimeter (at 25 degrees Celsius). Specific conductances of 2 ,000 to 5,000 micromhos per centimeter were most prevalent. The pH values ranged from 1.8 to 9.6 at the surface, whereas bottom measurements ranged from 2.0 to 8.5. Water temperatures near the surface ranged from 22.5 degrees Celsius in June to 34.5 degrees Celsius in August. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations differed greatly among the lakes; concentrations near the surface ranged from 6.0 to 13.2 milligrams per liter. Transparencies ranged from 0.3 to 35.4 feet. This was done to determine the plausible minerals and clay types in the aquifers that may be reacting with groundwater and affecting the water quality. The purpose of this report is only to present the whole rock x-ray and clay-fraction mineralogy data. Nineteen surface samples or samples from outcrop of Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial basin deposits in the central and southern Rio Grande rift were collected and analyzed. The analysis of the samples consisted of grain size analysis, and clay-size fraction mineralogy and semiquantitative analysis of the relative abundance of different clay mineral groups present. Stony Fork was sampled at six sites, during which time the area of surface mines increased from 0.5 to 5.5 percent of the study area. Streamflow, suspended-sediment, and water quality data were collected at gaging stations upstream and downstream of mining. The total runoff between the upstream and downstream stations differed by one percent; this small difference could not be attributed to the effects of mining. The suspended-sediment yield increased during storms due to erosion from the mining sites. The suspended-sediment yield doubled at the downstream site following mining. Specific conductance was highly variable during storm runoff but generally varied inversely with flow and increased slightly during the study period. The pH ranged between 4.8 and 7.9 with values below 6.0 usually occurring during storm runoff. Concentrations of dissolved zinc and sulfate increased between the upstream and downstream sampling sites. Laboratory analysis of a precipitation sample indicates that acid precipitation may be partly responsible for pH depressions during storm runoff periods. Sulfate concentrations in groundwater in the Prairie Dog Creek valley statistically larger during 1981-82 than before irrigation began. Concentrations of calcium, bicarbonate, sulfate, and dissolved solids in groundwater in the Republican River valley and calcium, sodium plus potassium, sulfate, chloride, and dissolved solids in groundwater in the Smoky Hill River valley were significantly larger during 1981-82 than before irrigation began. No significant long-term changes in nitrate concentrations in groundwater were detected in any of the three valleys. Irrigation generally has not caused contamination of groundwater in the alluvium with organic pesticides for which National Primary drinking-water standards have been established. The pesticide 2, 4-D was detected, however, at concentrations of less than 2 micrograms per liter in water from several wells and surface-water sampling sites. The transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and specific yield were estimated for the part of the aquifer that discharges at Barton Springs in Austin. The aquifer is composed of the Edwards and overlying Georgetown Limestones of Cretaceous age and ranges in thickness from about 100 ft to about 450 ft.
\n
More than 60 years of discharge measurements and 5 years of gaged discharge for Barton Springs were used to adjust springflow for the simulations. Barton Springs accounts for about 96% of springflow from the study area and 90% of the total discharge. The remaining discharge was pumpage from wells which was entered in the model. Four years of gaged recharge were used in the simulations. The potentiometric surfaces used by the models were constructed from water level measurements in as many as 75 wells.
\n
The transmissivity was calibrated through steady-state simulations that used the mean value of recharge and mean potentiometric surface to represent average conditions for the aquifer. The transmissivities vary from about 100 sq ft/day in the western part of the aquifer to > 1 million sq ft/day near Barton Springs. Specific yield was calibrated through transient-state simulations for 5 consecutive months using time-dependent data for recharge, discharge, and water levels. The mean specific yield for the aquifer is 0.014 and ranges from 0.008 to 0.064. Additional aquifer properties used in the simulations include storage coefficient, altitudes of the base and top of the aquifer, and hydraulic conductivity.
\n
A simulation for the year 2000 using projected pumping rates for municipal, industrial, agricultural, and domestic supplies indicates that the aquifer would be dewatered in the southwestern part of the study area and have large declines in the southeastern part of the study area. Another simulation of projected conditions using potential recharge enhancement predicts a rise in the potentiometric surface of about 50 feet in the southwestern part of the aquifer and moderate water-level declines in the southeastern part of the aquifer.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri854299","usgsCitation":"Slade, R.M., Ruiz, L., and Slagle, D., 1985, Simulation of the flow system of Barton Springs and associated Edwards Aquifer in the Austin area, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85-4299, vii, 49 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri854299.","productDescription":"vii, 49 p.","numberOfPages":"56","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":159322,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4299/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58555,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4299/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"Austin","otherGeospatial":"Edwards Aquifer","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db6977e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Slade, Raymond M.
