In 1963, 247 acres within the WNYNSC was developed for a nuclear-fuel reprocessing plant and ancillary facilities, including (1) a receiving and storage facility to store fuel prior to reprocessing, (2) underground storage tanks for liquid high-level radioactive wastes from fuel reprocessing, (3) a low-level wastewater treatment plant, and (4) two burial grounds for shallow burial of solid radioactive waste. A series of geologic and hydrologic investigations was done as part of the initial development and construction of the facilities by numerous agencies during 1960-62; these produced a large quantity of well data, some of which are difficult to locate or obtain. This report is a compilation of well and boring data collected during this period. The data include records of 236 wells, geologic logs of 145 wells and 167 test borings, and descriptions of 20 measured geologic sections. Two oversized maps show locations of the reported data. Samples were obtained by pumping water from the entire well bore (composite sample), and, in three instances, by pumping from one or more isolated intervals within a well bore. Sodium is the most abundant cation , and biocarbonate is the most abundant anion in all water samples. Samples from the Paleozoic carbonate aquifer penetrated by well UE-25p 1 contain higher relative concentrations of calcium and magnesium than samples from overlying volcanic tuffs. Values of the stable isotope concentrations of oxygen and hydrogen are relatively negative (light) and have deuterium excess values ranging from +5 to +10. The distribution of uncorrected radiocarbon ages of tuffaceous groundwater from samples within one kilometer of the exploratory block ranges from 12,000 to 18,500 years before present. Variation in the inorganic, stable, and radioactive isotope composition of samples indicates a significant degree of lateral and vertical chemical inhomogeneity in groundwater of the Yucca Mountain area. Veins in metasediments appear to be lenticular and average less than 1 m thick. A related, quartz-pyrite stockwork in fractured, hydrothermally altered basalt is approximately 1 km long and at least 100 m wide. Poorly defined veins and veinlets bear gold, stibnite, and quartz, A few areas of ancient goldmining activity are in metasediments at the perimeter of a large diorite pluton. The arrangement of the pits also indicates that unexposed veinlet systems may be as much as 40 m wide. Small areas of diorite have also been hydrothermally altered where gold-stibnite-quartz veins were emplaced.</p>\n<p>A molybdenite-quartz stockwork and other quartz stockworks bearing traces of molybdenum, bismuth, and silver are in small diorite plutons. Large areas of moderately hydrothermally altered metasediments bearing trace molybdenum are also present. Double-blind precision tests for an individual counter yielded a standard deviation that was * 10 percent of the mean. Differences between three counters exceeded * 10 percent, and a curve could be fit to calibration counts to yield correlation coefficients of 0.70 to 0.86 between counters. An 18-mile reach of the South Platte River, beginning below Chatfield Reservoir, through the Denver metropolitan area was studied. Chatfield Reservoir was used to regulate the flow of the South Platte River on four occasions between October 1982 and January 1984. Each flow-regulation period was used to achieve a stable, low-flow condition. Data collection during low flow allowed for the study of waste assimilation during both warm- and cold-water conditions. Water quality, streamflow, channel geometry, traveltime, mixing-zone, reaeration, and benthic-oxygen demand data were collected at selected instream, tributary, and effluent sites. Heavy mineral studies of two other drill cores indicate that the deposit is enriched in rare earths. The principal rare earth minerals are bastnaesite and doverite; other rare earth minerals include monazite and synchisite. Niobium occurs in pyrochlore; zirconium is present in zircon. Thorium is found principally in thorite and secondarily in thorianite. Autoradiographs show the distribution and relative sizes of several radioactive minerals.</p>\n<p>Microprobe studies of grains of eight different minerals indicated that significant elemental substitution took place in most of them. The rare earth metals cerium and lanthanum occur in significant amounts in pyrochlore; yttrium is abundant in doverite and is also present in bastnaesite, thorite, and zircon. Niobium substitutes for titanium in anatase and brookite, and some tantalum occurs with the niobium in pyrochlore. Minor amounts of thorium are found in bastnaesite, doverite, and zircon. Small amounts of uranium mostly occur with the thorium in thorite. Tin minerals were not found in any of the samples, but small and variable amounts of this element occur in bastnaesite, doverite, hematite, and zircon.</p>\n<p>The potential ore minerals in the apogranite commonly occur along the grain boundaries of the larger quartz and feldspar.
