Movement of a tracer-laced pulse of reclaimed wastewater was monitored using pressure-vacuum lysimeters installed at depths that range from 11 to 45 ft below the bottom of the recharge basin. Tracer-breakthrough curves do not indicate a consistent relation between maximum tracer concentration and depth or between time of tracer breakthrough and depth. Apparent dispersion, as indicated by the slope of the rising leg of the tracer-breakthrough curve, shows no apparent relation with depth. In some cases, the tracer arrived earlier at deep sampling locations than at shallow ones. Velocity of solute flow ranged from 1.9 to 9.0 ft/day. Less interaction between recharge water and solid-phase materials in the unsaturated zone occurs under preferential-flow conditions than if flow occurred as a uniform wetting front. Flow of water through the unsaturated zone is concentrated into fingers or channels under preferential-flow conditions, and the renovating capability of soil is reduced because of the reduced surface area and reduced contact time in the biologically active part of the unsaturated profile. Chemical substances that normally would be decomposed by microbial activity or sorbed by sediment particles can move through the unsaturated zone and cause groundwater contamination under preferential-flow conditions. Cross-sections of the channel and some lateral sections were run at each bridge in June and July 1987, and significant scour at piers supporting each of these bridges was recorded. Each of the four geophysical systems proved to have advantages and limitations. The ground penetrating radar system used single and dual 80 megahertz antennae floating in the water to transmit and receive the signal. The method was successful in water less than 25 ft deep, and in resistive earth materials. The geometry of existing scour holes and the extent of post-scour sedimentation were clearly defined. The color fathometer, operating at a signal frequency of 20 kilohertz, delineated existing scour-hole geometry, detected infilling of scour holes, and provided qualitative information about the physical properties of sediments. The tuned transducer, operating at a signal frequency of 14 kilohertz, defined scour-hole geometry and the extent of post-scour sediment deposition. Both of these systems were effective in water greater than 5 ft deep. At a signal frequency of 200 kilohertz, the black-and-white fathometer could not penetrate post-scour deposits, but it was useful in defining existing scour-holed geometry in water of any depth. The river is underlain directly or indirectly by six regional aquifers the Trinity Group, Edwards, Carrizo-Wilcox, Queen City, Sparta, and Gulf Coast; the Trinity Group aquifer is further subdivided into the lower Trinity, middle Trinity, and upper Trinity aquifers. Generalized potentiometric-surface maps of each regional aquifer show the ground-water-flow pattern near the river valley. Each regional aquifer discharges water to the lower Colorado River valley, particularly in the outcrop area of each aquifer. Only the Gulf Coast aquifer in central Wharton County appears to be recharged by water in the river valley. In addition to output from the formulas, the results from suspended-sediment samples and several bedload measurements using a Helley-Smith type bedload sampler are presented. No interpretation of the output is provided. The package consists of two FORTRAN 77 computer programs: (1) MODPATH, which calculates pathlines, and (2) MODPATH-PLOT, which presents results graphically. MODPATH uses a semi-analytical particle tracking scheme. The method is based on the assumption that each directional velocity component varies linearly within a grid cell in its own coordinate direction. This assumption allows an analytical expression to be obtained describing the flow path within a grid cell. Given the initial position of a particle anywhere in a cell, the coordinates of any other point along its path line within the cell, and the time of travel between them, can be computed directly. Data is input to MODPATH and MODPATH-PLOT through a combination of files and interactive dialogue. Examples of how to use MODPATH and MODPATH-PLOT are provided for a sample problem. Listings of the computer codes and detailed descriptions of input data format and program options are also presented. To update the basin plan developed in 1975 by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, San Diego Region, water-level and water quality data for the 44-sq mi Escondido hydrologic subarea were collected and analyzed. Water-level measurements indicate that groundwater in most of the subarea was within 20 ft of land surface. Groundwater generally moves from the weathered crystalline rocks on hillsides into the alluvium. Groundwater moves from north to south in Reidy Canyon and from east to west in the alluvium along Escondido Creek. Water from all 20 wells sampled in 1987 had dissolved-solids concentrations greater than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommended limit of 500 mg/L; concentrations ranged from 720 to 4,500 mg/L. Nitrate (as nitrogen) concentrations ranged from 1.1 to 86 mg/L. Water from 14 of the 20 wells had nitrate (as nitrogen) concentrations greater than the U.S. Environmental Agency recommended limit of 10 mg/L.
