Ground-water quality data have been and are being collected at more sites in Florida than are other types of ground- and surface-water hydrologic data. Information available from the Master Water Data Index includes location (county, hydrologic unit, and latitude-longitude); reporting agency; agency identifying number; period and frequency of record; types of data (parameter sampled); and for wells, the principal aquifer sampled and well depth. This information may be retrieved, upon request, in a variety of formats. This report contains an index of the information available, not the actual water-quality data itself. The actual data may be obtained from the reporting agency that collected and stored the data. Washing polyethylene with acetone, hexane, methanol, or nitric acid can change the adsorptive characteristics of the polyethylene. In this study, simulated precipitation at pH 4.5 was in contact with the polyethylene sacks for 21 days; subsamples were removed for chemical analysis at 7, 14, and 21 days after intitial contact. Sacks washed with acetone adsorbed iron and lithium; sacks washed with hexane adsorbed barium, iron , and lithium; sacks washed with methanol adsorbed calcium and iron; and sacks washed with 0.30 N nitric acid adsorbed iron. Leaching the plastic sacks with 0.15 N nitric acid did not result in 100-percent recovery of any of the adsorbed metals. Washing polyethylene sacks with dilute nitric acid caused the pH of the simulated precipitation to be decreased by 0.2 pH unit after 1 week of contact with the polyethylene. The specific conductance increased by 10 microsiemens per centimeter. Contamination of precipitation samples by lead was determined to be about 0.1 microgram per liter from contact with precleaned polyethylene sacks. No measurable contamination of precipitation samples by zinc occurred. The transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and specific yield were estimated for the part of the aquifer that discharges at Barton Springs in Austin. The aquifer is composed of the Edwards and overlying Georgetown Limestones of Cretaceous age and ranges in thickness from about 100 ft to about 450 ft.</p>\n<p>More than 60 years of discharge measurements and 5 years of gaged discharge for Barton Springs were used to adjust springflow for the simulations. Barton Springs accounts for about 96% of springflow from the study area and 90% of the total discharge. The remaining discharge was pumpage from wells which was entered in the model. Four years of gaged recharge were used in the simulations. The potentiometric surfaces used by the models were constructed from water level measurements in as many as 75 wells.</p>\n<p>The transmissivity was calibrated through steady-state simulations that used the mean value of recharge and mean potentiometric surface to represent average conditions for the aquifer. The transmissivities vary from about 100 sq ft/day in the western part of the aquifer to &gt; 1 million sq ft/day near Barton Springs. Specific yield was calibrated through transient-state simulations for 5 consecutive months using time-dependent data for recharge, discharge, and water levels. The mean specific yield for the aquifer is 0.014 and ranges from 0.008 to 0.064. Additional aquifer properties used in the simulations include storage coefficient, altitudes of the base and top of the aquifer, and hydraulic conductivity.</p>\n<p>A simulation for the year 2000 using projected pumping rates for municipal, industrial, agricultural, and domestic supplies indicates that the aquifer would be dewatered in the southwestern part of the study area and have large declines in the southeastern part of the study area. Calculated velocities for the time of maximum velocity in the tidal cycle ranged from 2.32 ft/sec near the bottom to 4.65 ft/sec near the surface of the sound in a cross section in the vicinity of a proposed wastewater outfall. Vertical velocity distributions calculated for the time of maximum velocity were similar at all stations at which velocities were measured except the station in shallow water near the shore. A recent bathymetric chart of the vicinity of the proposed outfall indicates that a bar extends farther along the northern shore of Hilton Head Island than indicated on earlier nautical charts of Port Royal Sound. Continued extension of this bar could alter the impact on water quality from discharge of treated wastewater into the sound. Further study may be needed to monitor changes in the bar if the outfall is located between the bar and Hilton Head Island. Conservative calculations based on the results of the dye tracer study indicate that the discharge of 10.9 million gallons/day of wastewater having concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids of 15 mg/L will result in a maximum cumulative increase in concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand of &lt; 0.01 mg/L and no increase in concentrations of suspended solids at high slack tide in the part of Port Royal Sound most affected by the proposed wastewater discharge. Sulfate concentrations in groundwater in the Prairie Dog Creek valley statistically larger during 1981-82 than before irrigation began. Concentrations of calcium, bicarbonate, sulfate, and dissolved solids in groundwater in the Republican River valley and calcium, sodium plus potassium, sulfate, chloride, and dissolved solids in groundwater in the Smoky Hill River valley were significantly larger during 1981-82 than before irrigation began. No significant long-term changes in nitrate concentrations in groundwater were detected in any of the three valleys. Irrigation generally has not caused contamination of groundwater in the alluvium with organic pesticides for which National Primary drinking-water standards have been established. The pesticide 2, 4-D was detected, however, at concentrations of less than 2 micrograms per liter in water from several wells and surface-water sampling sites. An upper basalt unit, an intermediate unconsolidated sedimentary rock unit, and a lower basalt unit were penetrated by the test hole. Drilling verified that the upper several hundred feet of high-resistivity material, as determined by surface electrical soundings, is basalt. Core examination, laboratory analysis, and correlation with other drill holes indicated that the basalt is typical of Quaternary basalt of the Snake River Group. Quaternary basalt in the test hole is 200 feet thick. Correlation with other drill holes and comparison with rock outcrops near the Snake River and in the Snake River canyon suggest that the underlying sediments and lower basalt unit are parts of the Tertiary and Quaternary Glenns Ferry Formation and Tertiary Banbury Basalt. Piezometers in the hole verify upward movement of water in a major discharge area for the regional aquifer. Hydraulic head in the bottom of the hole is about 155 feet higher than the water table. Lithologic sequence in the test hole correlates well with sequences in deep drill holes at scattered locations on the plain. A three-dimensional, finite-difference, groundwater flow model was developed to: (1) Reproduce hydrologic conditions in the flow system between the Equus beds aquifer and the underlying Wellington aquifer from 1940 to 1980, and (2) simulate the effect that future withdrawals could have on water supply in the Equus beds aquifer and on relationships between water levels in the Equus beds aquifer and the Wellington aquifer from 1980 to 2020. The model favorably reproduced both measured water levels and streamflow gains in the Equus beds aquifer for 1971 and 1980, and measured water levels in the Wellington aquifer. The flow model then was used to simulate the effects of five pumping alternatives based on rates of withdrawal by wells from 1971-79. For the first alternative, withdrawal rates were decreased by one-half. Projected saturated thickness in the aquifer and streamflow gain were the greatest among the five alternatives. For the second alternative, withdrawal rates for 1971-79 were continued. Compared to results from the first alternative, saturated thickness was projected to decline from 10 to 40 ft in some areas, and streamflow gains were maintained for the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers. A two-dimensional, finite-difference, solute-transport model was developed to: (1) Reproduce the movement of chloride ion in part of the Equus beds aquifer, including the Wichita municipal well field, from 1940 to 1980, and (2) simulate the effect that future withdrawal rates could have on the concentration of chloride ion from 1980 to 2020. Sources of the chloride ion were oilfield brine disposed from 1932-43 that is moving toward the well field and water in the Arkansas River. Each simulation projected an increase in the concentration of chloride ion in the Wichita well field. The projections indicated that a continuous 1,000 mg/L source of chloride ion in streamflow losses from the Arkansas River had a greater effect on increasing chloride-ion concentrations in the Wichita well field than did the movement of residual oilfield brine. Transmissivity of the aquifer ranges from 7,200 to 24,300 sq ft/day. Water table conditions prevail in the aquifer, which is in good hydraulic connection with perennial streams and ponds. A digital model of two-dimensional groundwater flow was used to simulate the interaction between surface water and groundwater, and to evaluate the impact of alternative schemes of groundwater development on groundwater levels, pond levels, and streamflow in the Beaver-Pasquiset groundwater reservoir. Transient simulations of theoretical pumpage were made for a drought period (1963-66) and a wet period (1976-78). The areas most favorable for development of high-capacity wells (350 gal/min or more) are along the Beaver River and near Pasquiset Pond. The water is soft and generally contains &lt; 100 mg/L dissolved solids. Locally, groundwater contains elevated concentrations of iron and manganese (7.5 and 3.7 mg/L, respectively), southeast of Pasquiset Pond, and will require treatment if used for public supply. The groundwater reservoir was simulated with a two-dimensional finite-difference model using a block-centered grid consisting of 33 rows and 75 columns. Differences between measured and simulated water table altitudes for the final steady state run for 21 selected observation wells averaged +0.07 ft. Combined pumping rates for simulation of groundwater development alternatives at eight sites ranged from 3.25 to 7.00 Mgal/d. Pumping rates for individual wells ranged from 0.25 to 1.50 Mgal/d. Transient simulations suggest that the Beaver-Pasquiset groundwater reservoir is capable of sustaining a pumping rate of 4.25 Mgal/d during years of average groundwater recharge with minimal impact on groundwater levels, pond levels, and streamflow. During extreme drought periods (1965 and 1966) it would be necessary to reduce pumpage below 3.25 Mgal/d to maintain flow in both the Beaver River and Pasquiset Brook. Sodium bicarbonate type water is less common. Isolated areas of sodium chloride and calcium sulfate types also are present. The water is predominantly very hard, and has a median hardness concentration of 258 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate and a median dissolved-solids concentration of 436 milligrams per liter. Few wells contain water with dissolved-solids concentrations in excess of 1,000 milligrams per liter.\r\n\r\nBicarbonate concentration in ground water was found to be significantly different among coals, whereas concentrations of bicarbonate, hardness, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, manganese, and strontium were significantly different between ground water in the Allegheny and Monongahela Formations. Many constituents are significantly correlated, but few correlation coefficients are high.\r\n\r\nThe presence of sulfate or iron is attributed to the kinetic mechanism operating during the oxidation of pyrite. The position along the sulfide or ferrous-iron oxidation pathways controls the reaction products of pyrite found in solution, and the formation of either the sulfate of iron constituents. The availability and rate of diffusion of oxygen in the formations exerts control on the water quality.\r\n\r\nDiscriminant-function analysis correctly classifies 89 percent of the observations into the Allegheny or Monongahela Formations. As a verifications, 39 of 41 observations from another study were correctly classified by formation.\r\n\r\nThe differences in water chemistry between the Allegheny and the Monongahela Formations are gradational and are attributed the oxidation of iron sulfide.
