,{"id":14520,"text":"ofr85194 - 1985 - Preliminary evaluation of magnitude and frequency of floods in selected small drainage basins in Ohio","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2012-02-02T00:06:46","indexId":"ofr85194","displayToPublicDate":"1994-01-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"1985","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"seriesTitle":{"id":330,"text":"Open-File Report","code":"OFR","onlineIssn":"2331-1258","printIssn":"0196-1497","active":true,"publicationSubtype":{"id":5}},"seriesNumber":"85-194","title":"Preliminary evaluation of magnitude and frequency of floods in selected small drainage basins in Ohio","docAbstract":"A previous study of flood magitudes and frequencies in Ohio concluded that existing regionalized flood equations may not be adequate for estimating peak flows in small basins that are heavily forested, surface mined, or located in northwestern Ohio.\r\n\r\nIn order to provide a large data base for improving estimation of flood peaks in these basins, 30 crest-stage gages were installed in 1977, in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Transportation, to provide a 10-year record of flood data\r\n\r\nThe study area consists of two distinct parts: Northwestern Ohio, which contains 8 sites, and southern and eastern Ohio, which contains 22 sites in small forested or surface-mined drainage basins. Basin characteristics were determined for all 30 sites for 1978 conditions.\r\n\r\nAnnual peaks were recorded or estimated for all 30 sites for water years 1978-82; an additional year of peak discharges was available at four sites. The 2-year (Q2) and 5-year (Q5) flood peaks were determined from these annual peaks.Q2 and Q5 values also were calculated using published regionalized regression equations for Ohio. The ratios of the observed to predicted 2-year (R2) and 5-year (R5) values were then calculated.\r\n\r\nThis study found that observed flood peaks aree lower than estimated peaks by a significant amount in surface-mined basins. The average ratios of observed to predicted R2 values are 0.51 for basins with more than 40 percent surface-minded land, and 0.68 for sites with any surface-mined land. The average R5 value is 0.55 for sites with more than 40 percent surface-minded land, and 0.61 for sites with any surface-mined land.\r\n\r\nEstimated flood peaks from forested basins agree with the observed values fairly well. R2 values average 0.87 for sites with 20 percent or more forested land, but no surface-mined land, and R5 values average 0.96. Stony Fork was sampled at six sites, during which time the area of surface mines increased from 0.5 to 5.5 percent of the study area. Streamflow, suspended-sediment, and water quality data were collected at gaging stations upstream and downstream of mining. The total runoff between the upstream and downstream stations differed by one percent; this small difference could not be attributed to the effects of mining. The suspended-sediment yield increased during storms due to erosion from the mining sites. The suspended-sediment yield doubled at the downstream site following mining. Specific conductance was highly variable during storm runoff but generally varied inversely with flow and increased slightly during the study period. The pH ranged between 4.8 and 7.9 with values below 6.0 usually occurring during storm runoff. Concentrations of dissolved zinc and sulfate increased between the upstream and downstream sampling sites. Laboratory analysis of a precipitation sample indicates that acid precipitation may be partly responsible for pH depressions during storm runoff periods. Saturated thicknesses within the aquifer are as great as 600 ft near the southern border of southwest Kansas. The aquifer is replenished primarily by infiltration from precipitation. Average precipitation at the Garden City Experiment Station is 18.93 in/yr. Groundwater flow is generally from west to east under unconfined conditions. Hydraulic connection with subcropping consolidated aquifers allows ground water to flow vertically in minor quantities. The aquifer is depleted primarily by irrigation. Hydraulic conductivity estimates from 1,612 lithologic logs had an average value of 75 ft/day, with a standard deviation of 35 ft/day. Specific yields estimated from the same lithologic logs had a mean of 0.17 and a standard deviation of 0.047. Water from the High Plains aquifer in Kansas generally is suitable for human and animal consumption and irrigation of crops. Typically, it is a calcium bicarbonate type water, with concentrations of total dissolved solids ranging from 250 to 500 mg/L. The quality of water in the aquifer deteriorates toward the east due to mixing with recharge water containing dissolved minerals leached from the overlying soil and unsaturated zones and mineralized water from adjacent bedrock units. The simulated water budget for the steady state model of predevelopment (pre-1950) conditions in the High Plains aquifer in northwest Kansas showed that annual recharge to the aquifer from infiltration of precipitation was 87,000 acre-ft/yr and from boundary inflow, 21,000 acre-ft/yr. Annual discharge from the aquifer was 108,000 acre-ft/yr, including 81,000 acre-ft/yr from leakage to streams, 23,000 acre-ft from outflow at the boundaries of the aquifer, and 4,000 acre-ft from municipal and industrial pumpage. These strata dip steeply westward and are underlain by shale and shaly graywacke to the east and overlain by lapilli crystal tuff to the west. This section is part of the Habawnah fold or mineral belt that extends from the Wadi Wassat area southward into Yemen. Western parts of the Habawnah fold belt, including the Al Masane area, are characterized by a bimodal assemblage of of phenocryst-poor basalts and sodic rhyolite crystal tuff, and by zinc-copper mineral deposits. Strata in the eastern part of the belt, mostly east of the Ashara fault zone, contain abundant phenocryst-rich mafic volcanic rocks, little felsic crystal tuff, and barren or locally nickeliferous massive pyrite deposits.</p>\n<p>Stratified rocks and gabbro sills of the Al Masane area were isoclinally folded and metamorphosed to the greenschist facies. Structural analysis indicates that foliation, lineation, joints, major and minor folds, and one of three sets of faults formed during a single east-west compressional deformational episode. Axial-plane foliation dips steeply westward and is usually coincident with bedding. Lineation plunges steeply to the northwest throughout the map area and is parallel to the intersection of joints of two major sets and to the intersection of these joints with foliation. Major folds have north-trending, gently plunging axes to which the axis of a minor fold set is essentially parallel. A second minor fold-set has a steeply plunging axis parallel to lineation. The Saadah massive-sulfide body is elongated by a fold of this system.</p>\n<p>Unmetamorphosed Proterozoic felsic sills, quartz monzonite and gabbro plutons, porphyritic diorite dikes, mafic dikes, and basalt dikes, in that apparent order, have intruded the stratified section. Basalt dikes are offset by southwestward-dipping reverse faults and by faults parallel to bedding.</p>\n<p>Malachite and metal-oxide-bearing gossans in the Al Masane area were mined in ancient times. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal in slag indicates that the ores were smelted about 1,200 years ago. Gossans are depleted in copper, silver, and zinc, relative to underlying sulfide, by factors of about 0.33, 0.2, and 0.08, respectively. Evaluation of numerous analyses of gossans, carbonates, and silicate rocks indicates that exploration for zinc-copper massive-sulfide deposits in the region should center on detailed geochemical studies of dolomitic beds.</p>\n<p>Dolomitization of host siliceous shales and tuffs and the formation of the massive-sulfide bodies at Al Masane probably caused by submarine fumarolic hydrothermal activity during periods of relative volcanic quiescence. Further work in the Al Masane region should include a study of the dolomitized areas and a search for other potential alteration \"pipe\" products (e.g. chlorite) as a guide to location of proximal deposits.</p>\n<p>Zinc-copper deposits at Al Masane and in the Dhahar-Al Hajrah and Kutam-Farah Garan areas have characteristics in common and are associated with felsic volcanic centers in the western bimodal part of the Habawnah mineral belt. They probably have parallel origins related to sea-floor volcanism. Deposits at Al Masane and Dhahar-Al Hajrah are possibly in the same general stratigraphic interval. This was done to determine the plausible minerals and clay types in the aquifers that may be reacting with groundwater and affecting the water quality. The purpose of this report is only to present the whole rock x-ray and clay-fraction mineralogy data. Nineteen surface samples or samples from outcrop of Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial basin deposits in the central and southern Rio Grande rift were collected and analyzed. The analysis of the samples consisted of grain size analysis, and clay-size fraction mineralogy and semiquantitative analysis of the relative abundance of different clay mineral groups present.
