The study, done in cooperation with the City of Bellevue, was part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 's National Urban Runoff program. The objectives of the study were to (1) establish a consistent and accessible data base for typical urban watersheds; (2) determine the magnitude and frequency of storm-runoff loads of water-quality constituents from three catchments in the city; (3) develop methods for estimating storm and annual loads of water-quality constituents from unsampled catchments in the study area; and (4) test the effectiveness of storm-water-quality management alternatives, such as street sweeping and detention storage, for the attenuation of constituent loads carried in storm runoff. This report presents data collected during the study period. Data include rainfall and runoff amounts, physical characteristics of the catchments, the chemical quality of storm runoff and in wet- and dry-atmospheric deposition, constituent loads in storm runoff and in wet- and dry-atmospheric deposition, and storm characteristics data, such as rainfall and runoff volumes. Three of the gaging stations are on the main stem and four are on tributary streams. These are the results from the second year of a two-year study in cooperation with the Lower James Conservancy Sub-District. The data listed in the tables and figures include location, a summary of the streamflow for the period of record, tables listing the daily streamflow, mean suspended-sediment concentration, and suspended-sediment discharge; and figures showing the daily streamflow, mean suspended-sediment concentration and suspended-sediment discharge for each gaging station. Sandbars are developing in the river and this data is to be used in studies analyzing sources of the sediment and tributary sediment loads relative to those carried by the main stem. Comenditic ash-flow tuffs, the oldest recognized rocks of the caldera complex, were erupted during caldera collapse associated with the rapid evacuation of the upper, mildly peralkaline part of a zoned magma reservoir. Within the tuff sequence, a massive, lithic-rich intracaldera tuff containing megabreccia blocks is overlain by a layered ash-flow sequence. Later peralkaline granite intruded the caldera ring fracture zone. Metaluminous to peraluminous magma rose beneath the caldera approximately 580 Ma ago and solidified as biotite alkali-feldspar granite, syenogranite, and granophyre. The information was needed because the EPA had confirmed the presence of dioxin contamination at Bubbling Spring Horse Arena and on properties in Romaine and Rock Creek basins. Streambed sampling in the upstream reaches of Romaine Creek shows that dioxin is leaving the sites. Because dioxin strongly adsorbs onto fine sediments, it is believed to be transported with the sediments by water erosion. Sediment yields from two sampling sites along Romaine Creek generally were small during base-flow periods; however, instantaneous storm-runoff sediment discharges as large as 1.7 lbs/sec occurred at the downstream site. Typical instantaneous sediment discharges during storm-runoff sampling ranged from <0.1 to 0.5 lb/sec. More than 99% of the suspended sediment was of silt- or clay-size particles (fines); this was true for both base-flow and storm-runoff periods. Suspended sediment collected during the storm of October 20, 1983, was analyzed for dioxin. At the upstream site, the dioxin concentration was 15.3 parts per billion (ppb) in the sediment, but none was detected in the residual water layer at a detection limit of 1 ppb. No dioxin was detected at the downstream site in either the sediment or residual water layer at the 1 ppb detection limit. The plutons are highly fractionated, leucocratic granitoids assigned to a major magmatic pulse that spanned the later stages of the Hijaz orogeny (about 610 Ma to about 550 Ma). Most of the targeted plutons are small or not deeply eroded. Two rock types are dominant: subsolvus, muscovite-bearing monzogranite or syenogranite; and hypersolvus, mieroeline perthite granite commonly containing sodic pyriboles. Enrichment in varied suites of the granitophile elements (Sn-W-NbTa-Zr-Y-Th-U) is characteristic. The plutons occupy the central part of a broad arcuate belt of geochemically specialized plutons that conforms generally to the eastern limit of exposed Proterozoic basement.
\n
The muscovite-bearing monzogranites containing anomalous tin and tungsten in rock and (or) wadi sediment samples occur generally east of long 42°30' E. Two of these, Jabal Minya and Jabal Khinzir, are recommended for immediate follow-up studies. Of the alkali granites, most of which occur in the area west of long 42°30' E., the composite plutons of Jabal Hadb ad Dayahin and Jabal Tuqfah have the highest potential for rare-element mineralization and warrant prompt systematic investigation. Evaluation of isolated one- or two-element anomalies should be coordinated with current high-density geochemical prospecting programs of the Riofinex Geological Mission.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr856","usgsCitation":"Moore, W.J., 1985, Mineral potential of felsic plutonic rocks in the north-central Arabian Shield, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-6, Report: ii, 47 p., ill.; Maps: 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr856.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 47 p., ill.; Maps: 28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143952,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0006/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38242,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0006/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38243,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0006/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38244,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0006/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38245,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0006/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38246,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0006/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 43,\n 17\n ],\n [\n 37,\n 25\n ],\n [\n 46,\n 25\n ],\n [\n 46,\n 17\n ],\n [\n 43,\n 17\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0be4b07f02db5fbd62","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, W.
