The site was selected for borehole geophysical research because it is included in a detailed groundwater study where the effects of flow in fractures on flow in overlying drift deposits is being studied. Three of the boreholes are approximately 100 meters in depth, and the fourth is approximately 230 meters in depth. All four boreholes were logged with caliper, acoustic, gamma, single-point-resistivity, and acoustic televiewer logs. Fracture sets dipping approximately 45 degrees to the east were detected in all four boreholes. Two sets of deeper fractures were detected near the bottom of the deepest borehole. Acoustic waveform logs were obtained in all boreholes using three different source frequencies, 34, 15, and 5 kilohertz, for future comparison with surface to borehole seismic data.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr85340","usgsCitation":"Paillet, F.L., 1985, Geophysical well log data for study of water flow in fractures near Mirror Lake, West Thornton, New Hampshire: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-340, vi, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85340.","productDescription":"vi, 27 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":394786,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75793.htm"},{"id":44252,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0340/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146456,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0340/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Hampshire","city":"West Thornton","otherGeospatial":"Mirror Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.69660568237305,\n              43.94110816034728\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.68905258178711,\n              43.94110816034728\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.68905258178711,\n              43.94679373516942\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.69660568237305,\n              43.94679373516942\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.69660568237305,\n              43.94110816034728\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b390","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Paillet, Frederick L.","contributorId":63820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paillet","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170954,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Borehole-wall breakouts were observed in the unaltered interiors of a large part of individual basalt flows; however, several of the flows in one of the five boreholes had almost no breakouts. The distribution of breakouts observed on the televiewer logs correlated closely with the incidence of core disking in some intervals, but the correlation was not always perfect, perhaps because of the differences in the specific fracture mechanisms involved. Borehole-wall breakouts were consistently located on the east and west sides of the boreholes. The orientation is consistent with previous estimates of the principal horizontal-stress field in south-central Washington, if breakouts are assumed to form along the azimuth of the least principal stress. The distribution of breakouts repeatedly indicated an interval of breakout-free rock at the top and bottom of flows. Because breakouts frequently terminate at major low-angle fractures, the data indicate that fracturing may have relieved some of the horizontal stresses near flow tops and bottoms. Unaltered and unfractured basalt appeared to have a uniform compressional velocity of 6.0 + or - 0.1 km/sec and a uniform shear velocity of 3.35 + or - 0.1 km/sec throughout flow interiors. Acoustics-waveform logs also indicated that borehole-wall breakouts did not affect acoustic propagation along the borehole; so fracturing associated with the formation of breakouts appeared to be confined to a thin annulus of stress concentration around the borehole. Televiewer logs obtained before and after hydraulic fracturing in these boreholes indicated the extent of induced fractures, and also indicated minor changes to pre-existing fractures that may have been inflated during fracture generation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr85419","usgsCitation":"Paillet, F.L., 1985, Acoustic-televiewer and acoustic-waveform logs used to characterize deeply buried basalt flows, Hanford site, Benton County, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-419, ix, 90 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85419.","productDescription":"ix, 90 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405274,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75804.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":44251,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0419/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146439,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0419/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","county":"Benton County","otherGeospatial":"Hanford site","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.97344970703124,\n              46.2957133089894\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.234619140625,\n              46.2957133089894\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.234619140625,\n              46.64377960861833\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.97344970703124,\n              46.64377960861833\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.97344970703124,\n              46.2957133089894\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b06e4b07f02db69a05f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Paillet, Frederick L.","contributorId":63820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paillet","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170953,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Precambrian formations include metamorphosed and strongly deformed volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks and plutons of calc-alkalic, mafic to intermediate composition, dated at about 645 Ma. These are unconformably overlain by the Maraghan formation of the Murdama group, composed of sandstone and siltstone deposited in a vast sedimentary basin present in the region between about 640 to 620 Ma. On the northwestern margin of this large basin, a smaller, fault-controlled basin was filled by the Hibshi formation, a sequence of conglomerate, sandstones, tuffs and minor lava flows, which dates from 632 Ma. Other volcanic rocks from this period probably accumulated around caldera-like volcanoes.
\n
The deposition of the Maraghan and Hibshi formations was interrupted by moderate deformation and metamorphism. About 617 Ma ago, the region was intruded by many granodiorite, granite and subordinate gabbro, diorite and peralkaline granite plutons. Gold-bearing quartz veins formed as a result of this intrusive event.
\n
A gap in the geologic record of nearly 40 Ma followed, ended by the emplacement of more evolved syenogranite and alkali-feldspar granite plutons. Hydrothermal alteration of one of these granites led to the formation of tin greisen; other granites contain anomalous amounts of rare-earth elements.
\n
The stable rock mass created by these geologic processes was extensively eroded at the end of the Precambrian, and was subsequently covered by flat-lying Lower Paleozoic clastic rocks, the Saq Sandstone of Cambrian (?) to early Ordovician age, and the Tabuk Formation, largely siltstone and claystone, of early Ordovician to early Silurian age. Another major gap in the record, extending from the early Paleozoic to late Cenozoic, ended by the extrusion of basaltic lava flows and cinder cones in the northern part of the quadrangle, about 1.8 Ma ago. Glacial-meltwater streams that deeply incise unstable pyroclastic and related flow deposits typically from debris flows when high discharge rates cause slope failures within steep-walled gorges. The landslide material either adsorbs streamflow quickly and becomes a slurry or it briefly dams the stream and converts to a debris flow as breaching occurs. All glacial-meltwater streams on Mount Shasta have been repeated debris-flow activity during the last 500 years. During this period, large-magnitude, potentially destructive flows on Mount Shasta have occurred at a rate of four per century, but smaller flows contained by stream channels may be 10 to 20 times more numerous. The smaller debris flows on Mount Shasta pose little hazard to human life or property, whereas larger, out-of-channel flows could cause minor damage. Only the City of McCloud and inhabited areas on the Whitney-Bolam fan appear to be threatened by possible debris-flow activity. None of the streams lacking glacial meltwater have had significant debris-flow activity during late Holocene time. Sediment yields from upper fan areas of Mount Shasta are very high, but most of the sediment, moved by debris flows from upper slopes is redeposited on lower fan areas, locally causing extensive and rapid aggradation of the fan surface. Little sediment enters a through-flowing stream network. Correspondingly high denudation rates in the sediment source areas for debris flows (the deep gorges) suggest that a high frequency of debris flows may be unique in recent centuries. The area was extensively surface mined for coal between the mid-1940 's and the early 1960's. Reclamation efforts immediately after mining were unsuccessful. The results have been elevated sediment loads and the subsequent loss of channel conveyance. Two sediment and stream gaging stations were established on West Branch Shade River in the area of past mining to provide data to evaluate the effectiveness of current reclamation activities on reducing sediment loads. A third station was established on the East Branch Shade River in an unmined area as a control. From October 1983 through September 1984, the annual suspended sediment yield/acre-ft of runoff was approximately two times as high for West Branch Shade River (0.51 ton/acre-ft of runoff) as for East Branch Shade River (0.28 ton/acre-ft). In addition, water quality of West Branch indicates that acidity is higher, pH is lower, and concentrations of dissolved sulfate and metals are higher than for East Branch. The concentration of coal in bed material increased in the downstream direction along West Branch Shade River. The concentration downstream in the West Branch was more than 20 times greater than in the East Branch. Data from all stations have multiple uses. All stations have sufficient justification for continuation, but five stations primarily are used in short-term research studies. Those five stations are scheduled to be discontinued at the end of the 1985 water year.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr85349","usgsCitation":"Ryan, G.L., 1985, Data uses and funding of the streamflow-gaging program in North Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 85-349, iv, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr85349.","productDescription":"iv, 29 p.","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":44760,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0349/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146500,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1985/0349/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f8d89","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ryan, Gerald L.","contributorId":43417,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ryan","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171629,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Recently, concerns about impacts of coal mining on surface-water quality have been raised. To answer these concerns, information on existing, or background, water quality must be known. To obtain this information for the study area, a program for the synoptic collection of water quality data was established in 1982. Water quality data were collected on continuously flowing streams in the upper North Fork of the Gunnison River basin in 1982 and 1983. Each site was sampled repetitively as changes occurred in streamflow and specific conductance.
