It is part of a nationwide evaluation of the stream-gaging program of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>One phase of evaluating cost effectiveness is to identify less costly alternative methods of simulating streamflow records. Statistical or hydro logic flow-routing methods were used as alternative methods to simulate streamflow records for 21 combinations of gaging stations from the 94-gaging-station network. Accuracy of the alternative methods was sufficient to consider discontinuing only one gaging station.</p><p>Operation of the gaging-station network was evaluated by using associated uncertainty in streamflow records. The evaluation was limited to the nonwinter operation of 29 gaging stations in eastern North Dakota. The current (1987) travel routes and measurement frequencies require a budget of about $248/000 and result in an average equivalent Gaussian spread in streamflow records of 16.5 percent. Changes in routes and measurement frequencies optimally could reduce the average equivalent Gaussian spread to 14.7 percent.</p><p>Budgets evaluated ranged from $235,000 to $400,000. These cruises, F4-88-HW and F6-88-HW, discovered an extensive lava flow field on the Hawaiian Arch and extensive landslide deposits that moved down through the Hawaiian Moat and up onto the Hawaiian Arch. These landslide deposits were apparently derived from two separate submarine failures on the north side of Molokai and the northeast side of Oahu. The cruise reports for these cruises will be released as USGS Open-File Reports in 1989.</p><p>This report summarizes the results of a subsequent cruise, F11-88-HW on the R/V Farnella, to sample some of the features discovered during the prior GLORIA surveys. Cruise F11-88-HW began in Honolulu on Oct. 25, 1988 and ended in Honolulu on Nov. 7, 1988. The major objectives of the cruise were to sample the giant lava field north of Oahu (Figure 1), to sample an apparently young flow between Oahu and Kauai (Figure 2) , to do some preliminary sampling of the deposits of the Nuuanu giant landslide northnortheast of Oahu, and to determine the thickness of sediment on flows in this lava field to compare to the acoustic backscatter variations observed in the GLORIA imagery of the flow field.</p><p>These objectives were modified during the cruise due to rough seas which limited the deployment of the camera sled and to problems with the coring equipment which limited us to collecting 10 ft gravity cores. In particular, we did not complete any work aimed directly at the Nuuanu landslide deposits. The comparison of sediment thickness on the flows to observed acoustic backscatter on the GLORIA images was not completed because flows with intermediate backscatter were found to have thicker sediment than we could sample. The other objectives were achieved and lava samples of the flows and vents of the flow field were recovered from 23 locations. Gravity cores on top of the flows also determined the sediment thickness at 12 locations. Total annual water use in the Reservation is about 36.5 million gallons per year and per capita use is about 100 gallons per day. Practically all the water is used for domestic supply. Ground water is the source of all water supplies in the Reservation.</p>\n<p>Three aquifers are the source of ground water in the Reservation. Unconfined-drift aquifers consist of surficial outwash that extends over one third of the Reservation. Confined-drift aquifers consist of sand and gravel deposits that occur discontinuously at depths of 50 to 150 feet throughout the Reservation. The third aquifer is in crystalline bedrock that underlies the glacial drift.</p>\n<p>Surface-water resources in the Reservation consist of numerous wetlands, many shallow lakes, and streams that drain five basins. All the basins in the Reservation are part of the St. Louis River drainage system, except for a small area in the southcentral part of the Reservation that is part of the Kettle River basin. Stoney Brook, which is the major stream, drains three fourths of the Reservation. Average discharge from Stoney Brook during the 1984 water year was 82 cubic feet per second. The lakes in the Reservation, which are shallow and small, have a combined surface area of about 3,000 acres.</p>\n<p>Concentrations of constituents in ground-water samples met recommended and regulated limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for drinking water except for samples collected from wells in the unconfined-drift aquifer that suggested limits for nitrate (one sample), iron (two samples), and manganese (six samples), were exceeded. Quality of water in the lakes and streams is suitable for native forms of plant and animal life.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, The peak discharge of Big Creek at Raleigh-Millington Road was almost twice the discharge of the 100-year flood discharge and that of Loosahatchie River near Arlington was about equal to the 50-year flood discharge. The inundated area and flood elevations are depicted on a map of Millington, Tennessee and vicinity. Water surface profiles for the peak of December 25, 1987, for Loosahatchie River, Big Creek, Royster Creek, North Fork Creek, Casper Creek, and an unnamed tributary to Big Creek are shown. Flood damages and cleanup costs for this record flood have been estimated at about $9.2 million. These measurements were made during base flow conditions to provide data for analysis of the interaction of surface and groundwater. The discharge of Bayou Creek was 0.30 cfs at the most upstream site, and 5.8 cfs at the most downstream site. Total measured tributary inflow of Bayou Creek was 5.7 cfs. Specific conductance values in the Bayou Creek watershed ranged from 208 to 489 microsiemens/cm, and water temperature ranged from 20.0 to 32.6 C. The discharge of Little Bayou Creek was 0.65 cfs at the most upstream site, and 1.8 cfs at the most downstream site. Total measured tributary inflow of Little Bayou Creek was 0.38 cfs. Specific conductance values in the Little Bayou Creek watershed ranged from 211 to 272 microsiemens/cm, and water temperature ranged from 14.5 to 24.9 C. A summary of 3 Federal, 5 State, and 14 local agencies, as well as various nonprofit organizations and universities, serving as repositories for water quality data is presented. Also included is information describing the range of chemical constituents, the ease of retrieving the data, and general characteristics of the data for use in a regional groundwater quality assessment. Certain characteristics of the available data limit their usefulness for a regional assessment of groundwater. These include a (1) lack of information on quality control; (2) inconsistent sampling; preservation, and analytical techniques used among and within agencies; (3) the clustering of sampling wells around known or suspected areas of contamination, which can impose a bias on water quality assessments; and (4) lack of information on sampling locations, well depths, well construction, and aquifer characteristics. Despite these limitations, the analysis provides a foundation for more detailed regional assessments of water resources on the Delmarva Peninsula and highlights areas where pertinent data are needed. Results of the analysis indicate that data on trace element and organic compound concentrations in groundwater in the Delmarva Peninsula are scarce, whereas data for nitrate, iron, and manganese concentrations are relatively abundant. The data indicate that elevated concentrations of nitrate, iron, and manganese are prevalent in water throughout the surficial aquifer--an aquifer that not only is important in recharging the underlying confined aquifer system, but in supplying drinking water to the majority of Delmarva Peninsula residents.
