The information is needed by water system managers and planners to develop water budgets for major river basins, to examine the relative extent of existing interbasin transfers, and to define the importance of transferring water to meet regional water demands. All or parts of 11 major water resources regions and 111 complete subregions comprise the study area; water is exported from 39 of these subregions. Fluctuations in the water table caused by ground-water withdrawal may result in periods when this water supply is not accessible to plants. The capacity of the plants to adapt to these periods of water loss depends on the availability of water stored in the soil and on physiological characteristics related to the ability of the plants to resist dehydration and wilting. \r\n\r\nOsmotic adjustment occurred in four phreatophytic shrub species at sites near Bishop, California, where the water table had been lowered by a system of pump-equipped wells installed in the vicinity of vegetation transects. The pressure-volume technique was used to determine osmotic potential and cell-wall elasticity between March 1985 and September 1986 for Atriplex torreyi, Chrysothamnus nauseosus , Sarcobatus verm iculatus , and Artemisia tridentata. Although not usually classified as a phreatophyte, Artemisia tridentata, where it grows on the valley floor, is apparently dependent on the depth to the water table. \r\n\r\nDuring late summer, osmotic potentials were 0.37 to 0.41 MPa (megapascal) lower in plants growing on the site where the water table had been lowered compared to an adjacent site where the water table remained at its natural levels. Measurements of soil matric potential at the two sites indicated that osmotic adjustment occurred in response to stress caused by lowering the water table. \r\n\r\nA theoretical lower limit of osmotic adjustment was determined by comparing initial cell osmotic potentials with initial xylem water potentials. These experimentally derived limits indicated that Atriplex torreyi and S. vermiculatus may maintain leaf cell turgor at significantly lower cell water potentials (about -4.5 MPa) than C. nauseosus or Artemisia tridentata (about -2.5 MPa), which allows them to function in drier soil environments.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O. ;For sale by the Books and Open-File Reports Section,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2370D","usgsCitation":"Dileanis, P.D., and Groeneveld, D.P., 1989, Osmotic potential and projected drought tolerance of four phreatophytic shrub species in Owens Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2370, 21 p. Strata of the Culpeper Group range in age from the Late Triassic to the Early Jurassic. The distribution of strata in the Culpeper Group is explained by accumulation of clastic sediments in a closed basin flanked by fault-block mountains that were episodically uplifted and eroded. Deposition within the basin was controlled by subsidence accompanying extensional tectonics during a dominantly semiarid climate punctuated by periods of abundant precipitation. During the late stages of Jurassic deposition of the Culpeper Group, tholeiitic diabase stocks, sills, and dikes (about 195 Ma) extensively intruded the sedimentary rocks and basalt flows and thermally metamorphosed them. The strata in the Culpeper and Barboursville basins were regionally tilted to the west, particularly along the western border faults, which produced steep dips, drag folds, gravity slumping, and slippage along bedding planes; broad, gently southwest plunging folds, and en echelon and strike-slip faults along the western basin margin; and folds and transverse faults within the basins. -from Authors</span></p>","language":"English","doi":"10.3133/pp1472","issn":"10449612","usgsCitation":"Lee, K.Y., and Froelich, A., 1989, Triassic-Jurassic stratigraphy of the Culpeper and Barboursville basins, Virginia and Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1472, v. 1472, Report: 52 p., 1 Plate: 41.00 x 55.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1472.","productDescription":"Report: 52 p., 1 Plate: 41.00 x 55.00 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":64779,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1472/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":64780,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1472/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":119820,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1472/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States ","state":"Virginia, Maryland ","otherGeospatial":"Culpeper Basin, Barboursville Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -79.91455078125,\n 37.10776507118514\n ],\n [\n -78.64013671875,\n 37.10776507118514\n ],\n [\n -78.64013671875,\n 39.04478604850143\n ],\n [\n -79.91455078125,\n 39.04478604850143\n ],\n [\n -79.91455078125,\n 37.10776507118514\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"1472","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a49e4b07f02db6246c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, K. The extent to which these plant communities are capable of adapting to and surviving fluctuations in the water table depends on physiological adaptations of the plants and on the water content, matric potential characteristics of the soils. Two methods were used to estimate soil matric potential in test sites in Owens Valley. The first, the filter-paper method, uses water content of filter papers equilibrated to water content of soil samples taken with a hand auger. The previously published calibration relations used to estimate soil matric potential from the water content of the filter papers were modified on the basis of current laboratory data. \r\n\r\nThe other method of estimating soil matric potential was a modeling approach based on data from this and previous investigations. These data indicate that the base-10 logarithm of soil matric potential is a linear function of gravimetric soil water content for a particular soil. The slope and intercepts of this function vary with the texture and saturation capacity of the soil. Estimates of soil water characteristic curves were made at two sites by averaging the gravimetric soil water content and soil matric potential values from multiple samples at 0.1-m depth intervals derived by using the hand auger and filter-paper method and entering these values in the soil water model. The characteristic curves then were used to estimate soil matric potential from estimates of volumetric soil water content derived from neutron-probe readings. \r\n\r\nEvaluation of the modeling technique at two study sites indicated that estimates of soil matric potential within 0.5 pF units of the soil matric potential value derived by using the filter-paper method could be obtained 90 to 95 percent of the time in soils where water content was less than field capacity. The greatest errors occurred at depths where there was a distinct transition between soils of different textures.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O. ;For sale by the Books and Open-File Reports Section,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2370C","usgsCitation":"Sorenson, S.K., Miller, R.F., Welch, M.R., Groeneveld, D.P., and Branson, F.A., 1989, Estimating soil matric potential in Owens Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2370, 18 p. Reduction of streamflow may cause an upstream movement of saltwater in the rivers. Data on flow, tide, and salinity define the physical characteristics of both estuaries. Vertical and longitudinal salinity profiles indicate that the estuaries are reasonably well mixed for the streamflow and high-tide conditions observed during the study. Estimates of the daily maximum upstream locations of the vertically averaged 3-ppt and 5-ppt salinities in the Chassahowitzka River and the vertically averaged 2-ppt and 5-ppt salinities in the Homosassa River are described by multiple linear regression analysis using daily mean streamflow of each river and high-tide stage of the gulf. For the vertically averaged 3-ppt and 2-ppt salinities, the square of the correlation coefficient for the predictive equations ranged from 0.77 to 0.85. For the vertically averaged 5-ppt salinities, the square of the correlation coefficient for the predictive equations ranged from 0.73 to 0.88. Upstream movement of salt-water due to pumping 40 million gal/day from a well field near the headwater springs of the Chassahowitzka and Homosassa Rivers was determined. Pumping at this rate from the Chassahowitzka River would cause a 15% reduction of average spring flow, resulting in an upstream movement of both the vertically averaged 3-ppt and 5-ppt of about 0.3 mile. In the Homosassa River, pumping would cause a 13% reduction of average spring flow, resulting in an upstream movement of both the vertically averaged 2-ppt and 5-ppt salinities of about 0.1 mile. Local sources of water for residents of the rancheria are of poor quality or limited availability. Domestic needs are presently met by water from a hand-dug well and from a drilled well with a potential yield of 15 gal/min. Water from both wells fails to meet California State drinking-water standards, primarily because of high concentrations of chloride and dissolved solids. High concentrations of sodium and boron pose additional problems for agricultural use of the water. The dissolved ions originate in Upper Cretaceous marine sediments of the Cortina Formation, which occurs at or near land surface throughout the rancheria. Small quantities of fresh groundwater may occur locally in the Tehama Formation which overlies the Cortina Formation in the eastern part of the rancheria. Canyon Creek, the largest stream on the rancheria, flows only during winter and spring. Water from one of the rancheria 's three springs meet drinking water standards, but it almost stops flowing in summer. The generally poor quality of ground and surface water on the rancheria is typical of areas along the west side of the Sacramento Valley. Additional hydrologic information could indicate more precisely the quantity and quality of surface and groundwater on Cortina Rancheria. Principal features of a possible data-collection program would include monitoring of discharge and water quality in three springs and in Canyon Creek, electromagntic terrain conductivity surveys, and monitoring of water levels and quality in two existing wells and several proposed test wells. This report describes a study to analyze drilling trends on the basis of data for selected years from 1964 through 1984. The study focused primarily on the years 1964 and 1980-84 but also included data from 1960. \r\n\r\nApproximately 397,000 water wells were drilled in the United States in 1984. Seven States, Florida, Texas, New York, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, and Ohio, accounted for 39 percent of all the wells drilled in the United States in 1984. Florida led the Nation in drilling activity with 45,600 new wells. The 1984 national drilling total was 2.6 percent greater than the total for 1980 (387,000) and 8.5 percent less than the total for 1964 (434,000). However, these moderate differences do not reflect substantial year-to-year fluctuations that may have occurred during that 20-year period. \r\n\r\nQualitative comparisons suggest that drilling activity for a given year is closely related to the number of housing starts for that year. If so, there may have been peaks in drilling activity in 1972 and 1977-78 (corresponding to peaks in housing starts) that are not identified in this study because of a lack of available well-drilling data for those years. Well-drilling data for 1964 and the 1980-84 period probably represent a low to moderate level of drilling activity and, if compared to earlier data, suggest that there has been no substantial growth or decline in the water-well industry as a whole since the 1940's.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir1029","usgsCitation":"Hindall, S.M., and Eberle, M., 1989, National and regional trends in water-well drilling in the United States, 1964-84: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1029, iii, 15 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir1029.","productDescription":"iii, 15 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123207,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1989/1029/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30883,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1989/1029/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b28e4b07f02db6b15ec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hindall, S. The April 1986 test included the pumping of 2 test wells for 72 hours at a combined discharge rate of 1,375 gal/min, and the measurement of water levels in 10 observation wells. No lateral recharge boundary in Raritan Bay affected the observed water-level changes. Assuming leaky artesian conditions, the average transmissivity and storage coefficient of the upper aquifer are 7,754 sq ft/day and 0.00044 respectively. The leakance of the combined confining units ranges from 0.000030 to 0.000076/day/ft. On the basis of lithologic samples from a nearby well, the overlying and underlying confining units were assumed to have similar hydraulic properties. By using this assumption, the vertical hydraulic conductivity of the confining units ranges from 0.010 to 0.027 ft/day.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri884183","usgsCitation":"Pucci, A.A., Pope, D., and Ivahnenko, T., 1989, Aquifer-test analysis of the upper aquifer of the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system, Union Beach Borough, Monmouth County, New Jersey: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 88-4183, Report: vi, 27 p.; 3 Plates: 32.15 × 21.07 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri884183.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 27 p.; 3 Plates: 32.15 × 21.07 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":395907,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_49226.htm"},{"id":58087,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58086,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58085,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58088,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124152,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","county":"Monmouth County","otherGeospatial":"Union Beach Borough","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -74.2056,\n 40.425\n ],\n [\n -74.15,\n 40.425\n ],\n [\n -74.15,\n 40.45\n ],\n [\n -74.2056,\n 40.45\n ],\n [\n -74.2056,\n 40.425\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac5e4b07f02db679ec9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pucci, A. The study area was divided into a Mountain Region and a Plains Region and the estimation methods were applied separately in the two regions. Four methods were developed to estimate mean monthly streamflow at ungaged sites. The first method was based on the regression relation between mean monthly streamflow and various basin and climatic characteristics. The standard errors ranged from 35 to 71% in the Mountain Region and from 98 to 157% in the Plains Region. The second method was based on the regression relations between mean monthly streamflow and active-channel width. The standard errors ranged from 38 to 81% in the Mountain Region and from 71 to 98% in the Plains Region. The third method was based on correlation of measured streamflow at ungaged sites with concurrent daily mean streamflow at nearby gaged sites. The standard errors ranged from 36 to 66% in the Mountain Region and from 109 to 321% in the Plains Region. The fourth method, generally the most reliable, estimated mean monthly streamflows by weighing individual estimates in accordance with their variance and degree of independence. The standard error for this method when all three individual estimates were weighed ranged from 25 to 55% in the Mountain Region and from 71 to 97% in the Plains Region. The first test, on May 12, 1978, entailed pumping the Magothy aquifer for 12 hours; the second on July 30-31, 1985, entailed pumping the upper glacial aquifer for 24 hours. Drawdown and recovery data from both tests were analyzed through analytical solutions and curve-matching procedures, and the resulting hydraulic values were used as initial values in a finite-element radial-flow numerical model to simulate the observed drawdowns and recoveries. Storativity values obtained by all methods were consistent with published estimates; but hydraulic conductivity values were higher than published estimates. The simple analytical solutions and curve-matching procedures gave reasonable values of most terms quickly, but the greatest confidence is in the estimates made with the finite-element model. These estimates for the Magothy aquifer were: horizontal hydraulic conductivity of 100 ft/d; ratio of horizontal to vertical conductivity, 5; and specific storage, 0.0001. Estimates for the upper glacial aquifer were: horizontal hydraulic conductivity, 380 ft/d; ratio of horizontal to vertical hydraulic conductivity, 2.5; and specific yield, 0.15.
