Water samples were collected from 87 observation wells screened in Coastal Plain sediments; 59 samples were collected from the Canal Creek aquifer, 18 from the overlying surficial aquifer, and 10 from the lower confined aquifer. Dissolved solids, chloride, iron, manganese, fluoride, mercury, and chromium are present in concentrations that exceed the Federal maximum contaminant levels for drinking water. Elevated chloride and dissolved-solids concentrations appear to be related from contaminant plumes but also could result from brackish-water intrusion. Excessive concentrations of iron and manganese were the most extensive water quality problems found among the inorganic constituents and are derived from natural dissolution of minerals and oxide coatings in the aquifer sediments. Volatile organic compounds are present in the Canal Creek and surficial aquifers, but samples from the lower confined aquifer do not show any evidence of contamination by inorganic or organic chemicals. The volatile organic contaminants detected in the groundwater and their maximum concentrations (in micrograms/L) include 1,1,2,2- tetrachloroethane (9,000); carbon tetrachloride (480); chloroform (460); 1,1,2-trichloroethane (80); 1,2-dichloroethane (990); 1,1-dichloroethane (3.1); tetrachloroethylene (100); trichloroethylene (1,800); 1,2-trans- dichloroethylene (1,200); 1,1-dichloroethylene (4.4); vinyl chloride (140); benzene (70); and chlorobenzene (39). On the basis of information on past activities in the study area, some sources of the volatile organic compounds include: (1) decontaminants and degreasers; (2) clothing-impregnating operations; (3) the manufacture of impregnite material; (4) the manufacture of tear gas; and (5) fuels used in garages and at the air-field. The high density of most of the detected organic compounds in free-product form would have aided their movement into the aquifers by vertical sinking. The outcrop area of the upper confining unit and an area cut by a paleochannel are most susceptible to contamination because a near-surface impermeable layer is not present. The April 1986 test included the pumping of 2 test wells for 72 hours at a combined discharge rate of 1,375 gal/min, and the measurement of water levels in 10 observation wells. No lateral recharge boundary in Raritan Bay affected the observed water-level changes. Assuming leaky artesian conditions, the average transmissivity and storage coefficient of the upper aquifer are 7,754 sq ft/day and 0.00044 respectively. The leakance of the combined confining units ranges from 0.000030 to 0.000076/day/ft. On the basis of lithologic samples from a nearby well, the overlying and underlying confining units were assumed to have similar hydraulic properties. By using this assumption, the vertical hydraulic conductivity of the confining units ranges from 0.010 to 0.027 ft/day.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri884183","usgsCitation":"Pucci, A.A., Pope, D., and Ivahnenko, T., 1989, Aquifer-test analysis of the upper aquifer of the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system, Union Beach Borough, Monmouth County, New Jersey: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 88-4183, Report: vi, 27 p.; 3 Plates: 32.15 × 21.07 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri884183.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 27 p.; 3 Plates: 32.15 × 21.07 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":395907,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_49226.htm"},{"id":58087,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58086,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58085,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58088,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124152,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1988/4183/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","county":"Monmouth County","otherGeospatial":"Union Beach Borough","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -74.2056,\n 40.425\n ],\n [\n -74.15,\n 40.425\n ],\n [\n -74.15,\n 40.45\n ],\n [\n -74.2056,\n 40.45\n ],\n [\n -74.2056,\n 40.425\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac5e4b07f02db679ec9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pucci, A. In response to this concern, the focus of the Iowa ground-water-quality-monitoring program has shifted to emphasize nonpoint contaminants. The program, which began in 1982, is operated by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey Bureau and Environmental Protection Division. The objectives are to describe and assess the long-term chemical quality of the principal aquifers in Iowa and to direct water-quality assessment and sampling toward regional ground-water-quality concerns.
\n
In the spring of 1985, emphasis was placed on the analysis of pesticides in water samples collected from wells completed in surficial aquifers in Quaternary deposits or from wells less than 200 feet deep or both. Samples from these wells were analyzed for nitrate and selected pesticides. In water samples collected from 515 individual shallow wells, 6 percent had nitrate concentrations larger than the maximum contaminant level for public drinking water of 10 milligrams per liter as nitrogen. The concentrations ranged from less than 0.1 to 53 milligrams per liter as nitrogen. Eighteen percent of the samples had concentrations of nitrate between 5 and 10 milligrams per liter as nitrogen. Water samples from 355 individual municipal wells less than 200 feet deep have been analyzed for pesticides at least once. Detectable concentrations of at least one pesticide, including alachlor, atrazine, cyanazine, dicamba, metolachlor, or metribuzin, were detected in 20 percent of the samples. Atrazine was the most prevalent pesticide; concentrations, which ranged from 0.10 to 21 micrograms per liter, were detected in 18 percent of the samples.
\n
The results of the monitoring program indicate a relation between decreasing well depth and the presence of detectable concentrations of nitrate and pesticides. Most nitrate and pesticide detection was in areas where surficial aquifers in Quaternary deposits are the principal source of ground water. Pesticides were detected in samples collected throughout the year; samples collected in late spring and early summer more frequently contained pesticides than the other samples.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Iowa City","doi":"10.3133/wri884123","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the University of Iowa Closed loop systems are unique in that the system noise can not be determined via a blocked mass test as in older conventional open loop seismic sensors. Instead, most investigators have resorted to performing measurements on two or more systems operating in close proximity to one another and to analyzing the outputs of these systems with respect to one another to ascertain their relative noise levels.

The analysis of side-by-side relative performance is inherently dependent on the accuracy of the mathematical modeling of the test configuration. This report presents a direct approach to extracting the system noise levels of two linear systems with a common coherent input signal. The mathematical solution to the problem is incredibly simple; however the practical application of the method encounters some difficulties. Examples of expected accuracies are presented as derived by simulating real systems performance using computer generated random noise. In the northern half of the study area, the Barnwell and underlying McBean aquifers are considered one aquifer owing to the absence of the tan clay-confining unit between them. In the southern half of the study area they are separated by the tan clay into two aquifers. Underlying these aquifers, and separated from them by the green clay-confining unit, is the Congaree aquifer. Hydraulic conductivities of the aquifers range from 0.00000001 to 0.0001 ft/sec. Directions of groundwater flow in the Barnwell and McBean aquifers are to the north, with a component of flow directed downward across the green clay and into the Congaree aquifer. The direction of flow in the Congaree aquifer is to the northwest. Water in these aquifers evolves from an acidic (pH < 6.5) mixed-cation type in the Barnwell aquifer to an alkaline (pH > 8) calcium bicarbonate water in the Congaree aquifer. Laboratory experiments indicate that reactions between sediments of the Barnwell aquifer and a salt-solution waste to be stored at the study area would significantly reduce the permeability of the sediment, thereby limiting the movement of the waste in groundwater at the site. The spatial data sets required by the project must have line features that match closely enough across map boundaries to ensure full line topology when adjacent files are joined by the computer. Automated edgematching techniques are evaluated as to their effects on positional accuracy. Interactive methods such as selective node-matching and on-screen editing are also reviewed. Interactive procedures complement automated methods by allowing supervision of edgematching in a cartographic and hydrologic context. Common edge conditions encountered in the preparation of the Northwest Rivers data base are described, as are recommended processing solutions. Suggested edgematching procedures for 1:100,000-scale hydrography data are included in an appendix to encourage consistent processing of this theme on a national scale.
