All work situations incidental to the Geological Survey cannot be discussed in a handbook, and such complete coverage is not intended in this document. A 1968 article by James Schlesinger on the likely success of systems analysis in aiding decision-makers is used to illustrate some pitfalls involving comprehensive technologies. The lessons of systems analysis are drawn together with the literature on instream flow methods to illustrate that there is no one best way to perform an instream flow analysis. The glossary contains five tables. Table 1 is a list of parameters with associated symbols and units. Tables 2 to 5 are conversion charts. The original manuscript was prepared by Thomas J. Nicholson, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It was subsequently examined by the Ground-Water Glossary Working Group and experts within and outside the Federal Government, whose recommendations were accommodated where appropriate in the glossary. It is hoped that the glossary will aid in the communications between soil scientists, hydrologists, and hydrogeologists.</p>\n<p>The terms defined in the glossary were selected after an extensive survey of glossaries and reports in the areas of (1) ground-water geology, hydraulics, and chemistry, (2) soil-water physics and chemistry, (3) contaminant transport, (4) unsaturated-zone hydrology, (5) chemistry and transport of solutes, and (6) ground-water quality. Some of the definitions have been modified for clarity from a variety of technical sources. Where more than one definition appears for the selected term, the first one was determined by the working group to be the most appropriate general definition, followed by other, more specialized, definitions. Some terms and definitions are not currently in use by all agencies; however, they are included in the glossary because they can be found in the literature. The reader is encouraged to consult with the original source cited for more explanatory comments. Additional regulatory definitions, which are underlined and are taken directly from the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and Federal laws (USC), were added following review by the various Federal agencies in May 1986.</p>\n<p>The definitions and conversion charts are from two principal sources provided herein. The first is the 11Glossary11 compiled by A. I. Johnson in the 1981 report by the American Society of Testing and Materials titled Permeability and Groundwater Contaminant Transport. These birds demonstrated a progressive loss of motor control to the neck, wings, and legs. Based on necropsy and/or histopathology of 31 cranes, the most common lesions involved skeletal muscle and included hemorrhages, granulomatous myositis, thrombosis, and vascular degeneration. Serum chemistry results revealed that levels of creatinine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase were above published normals. Each record provides information on nomenclature, plant characteristics and lifeforms, distribution, and frequency of occurrence in wetlands.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The List of Plant Species that Occur in Wetlands, developed to supplement the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's <u>Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States</u> (Cowardin et al. 1979), underwent an intensive review by field botanists across the country. This review was coordinated by national and regional interagency wetland plant list review panels composed of representatives from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Soil Conservation Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Initial and updated versions of the Data Base List of Plant Species that Occur in Wetlands are available in hardcopy (Reed 1986, 1988). Regional lists are available as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Biological Report Series 88(26.126.13). State lists are available as National Ecology Research Center Report Series 88(18.01-18.50). The computerized data base tracks and documents indicator assignments made by regional interagency review panels and facilitates generation of reports.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This user's guide describes the format and contents of the LIST Data Base.  The Data Base is available on 5-1/4\" floppy disks in ASCII format for use with a data base management system on an IBM PC/XT/AT compatible computer.  The LIST Data Base was developed using the QUICKTEXT Data Base Management System (Osborn and Strong 1984).  Use of QUICKTEXT with the LIST Data Base is strongly recommended.  Instructions for loading LIST into QUICKTEXT are included in this user's guide.  Other data base management systems capable of handling variable length fields can be used by individuals familiar with these software packages.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>LIST distribution disks are available for 13 regions (Table 1).
