Since the time of the earliest settlement, the need for iron for tools and guns, lead for bullets, and copper for utensils has prompted a search for sources of these metals. The lure of gold and silver provided the impetus for much of the development in the West between 1850 and 1910. Later, prospectors carried out successful ventures to fulfill the country's expanding industrial demands for other metals such as zinc, molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, vanadium, and many others. Even America's uninhabited rugged mountains or barren deserts have been prospected although perhaps only at a reconnaissance scale.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/70039396","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1989, Suggestions for prospecting: General Information Product, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70039396.","productDescription":"25 p.","numberOfPages":"27","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261538,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/70039396/report.pdf"},{"id":261539,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/70039396/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9db6e4b08c986b31da18","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535286,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Highlights include detailed maps of gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies, heat flow, crustal thickness, seismicity, state of stress, and paleomagnetic pole positions. Important tectonic insights have come from earthquake studies, and from knowledge of lithospheric structure derived from seismic reflection, refraction/wide-angle reflection, surface-wave, and teleseismic data. Additional major advances in lithospheric geophysics will depend on four key factors: the reduction of uncertainties in the measurement and interpretation of geophysical data, the widespread application of coincident geophysical methods in concert with geological investigations, the collection of a more uniform continent-scale data base for all geophysical measurements, and the investigation of topical geophysical questions regarding the physical state and properties of the lithosphere. The impracticality of repeating most geophysical field measurements introduces poorly known, but likely large, uncertainties. Since most measurements are not repeated, high priority must be given to the reduction and quantification of uncertainties in measurements and interpretations. The most productive future investigations, in terms of resolution and minimum uncertainties in interpretation, will be those that apply different geophysical methods along identical profiles or areas, and that include geological investigations as a vital ingredient. Important gaps remain in our knowledge of the geophysical framework of the United States on a continent-wide scale, including the deep conductivity structure, the nature of the Moho discontinuity, the structure of the subcrustal lithosphere, and the depth of the lithosphere/asthenosphere boundary. Most transition zones separating geologic or physiographic provinces are poorly studied, yet these zones are likely to be the locations of the most profound changes in the physical properties of the lithosphere. Application of coincident geophysical techniques is needed to study these transition zones. Several topical geophysical questions warrant special emphasis in the future. These questions include the rheology of the crust and subcrustal lithosphere; the distribution, composition, and abundance of fluids in the crust; the genesis and evolution of the Moho; the origin of crustal conductivity zones and deep crustal reflections; the evidence for seismic anisotropy; and the short-term prediction of earthquakes.

","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/MEM172-p799","usgsCitation":"Mooney, W.D., and Pakiser, L.C., 1989, Geophysical framework of the continental United States: Progress, problems, and opportunities for research: GSA Memoirs, v. 172, p. 799-811, https://doi.org/10.1130/MEM172-p799.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"799","endPage":"811","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":374964,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -126.12304687500001,\n              41.11246878918088\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.025390625,\n              32.99023555965106\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.26953125,\n              30.524413269923986\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.240234375,\n              25.085598897064752\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.40625,\n              27.761329874505233\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.25390625,\n              27.839076094777816\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.44140625,\n              25.48295117535531\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.453125,\n              24.686952411999155\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.98046875,\n              30.977609093348686\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.970703125,\n              35.53222622770337\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.060546875,\n              44.402391829093915\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.8515625,\n              47.57652571374621\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.564453125,\n              45.521743896993634\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.5078125,\n              45.767522962149876\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.33984375,\n              49.15296965617042\n            ],\n            [\n              -126.21093749999999,\n              49.03786794532644\n            ],\n            [\n              -126.12304687500001,\n              41.11246878918088\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"172","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mooney, Walter D. 0000-0002-5310-3631 mooney@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5310-3631","contributorId":3194,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mooney","given":"Walter","email":"mooney@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":789537,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pakiser, L. Although a large volume of laboratory and field data on many aspects of soil behavior had been gathered between the 1950s and 1970s, during which period the use of organic pesticides was increased, no general agreement was reached regarding the sorptive mechanism involved. Since the 1970s, the outgrowth of public concern over environmental contamination further stimulated research in this subject. The development of this field of research has now reached a point that the diverse characteristics of soil sorption can be placed in a much better perspective. The 52,000-ha complex covers four life zones and two transitional zones, including tropical wet forest, tropical wet forest cool-transition, tropical premontane wet-transition rain forest, tropical premontane rain forest, lower montane rain forest, and montane rain forest. Located in the northeastern part of the country, the area is representative of Central American Caribbean slope forests that extend from Mexico to Panama. The extensive elevational gradient of the complex provides protected habitat for a variety of altitudinal migrants.
\n
\n
With support from the National Geographic Society and Rice Foundation, the Organization for Tropical Studies organized a biological survey of the complex in early 1986. The mammal team worked at six sites along the elevational transect established by the expedition: 300 m, 700 m, 1,000 m, 1,500 m, 2,050 m, and 2,600 m. We supplemented our collecting records with unpublished records made available by colleagues, records in the published literature, and specimens in museum collections. In addition, observations recorded by a variety of observers at the La Selva Biological Station are summarized.
\n
\n
The mammal fauna of the complex comprises 142 species including 79 bats, 23 rodents, 15 carnivores, 7 marsupials, 6 edentates, 4 artiodactyls, 3 primates, 2 rabbits, 2 shrews, and 1 perissodactyl. At least 10 additional species are likely to occur there. The only species of mammal likely to have been extirpated from the area is the giant anteater.
\n
\n
Recognizing the importance of the area to wildlife and to mankind in general, the government of Costa Rica added 13,500 ha to the complex on 13 April 1986. This area, previously known as the “Zona Protectora,” provided the mid-elevational link between the lowlands of the La Selva Biological Station and the montane forests of Braulio Carrillo National Park. Unfortunately, destruction of the rain forests surrounding the complex will soon render it an isolated island of protected forest. Thus, the area will become increasingly valuable as a refuge for many species with home ranges that require extensive tracts of undisturbed habitat.
","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"North American Fauna","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3996/nafa.75.0001","usgsCitation":"Timm, R., Wilson, D.E., Clauson, B.L., LaVal, R.K., and Vaughan, C.S., 1989, Mammals of the Braulio Carrillo- La Selva Complex, Costa Rica: North American Fauna, v. 75, p. 1-162, https://doi.org/10.3996/nafa.75.0001.","productDescription":"162 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"162","numberOfPages":"162","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":479882,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc700933/","text":"External Repository"},{"id":293362,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":293361,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.3996/nafa.75.0001"}],"volume":"75","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"542a74fae4b01535cb4278e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Timm, Robert M.","contributorId":92975,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Timm","given":"Robert M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":500054,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wilson, Don E.","contributorId":22254,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"Don","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":500052,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Clauson, Barbara L.","contributorId":95811,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clauson","given":"Barbara","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":500055,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"LaVal, Richard K.","contributorId":13155,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LaVal","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":500051,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Vaughan, Christopher S.","contributorId":54899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vaughan","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":500053,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

We divide the region tectonically into the southern transform regime of the San Andreas fault and the northern subduction regime, and summarize the geophysical framework with contour maps of crustal thickness, lithospheric and seismicity cross sections, and results from site-specific geophysical studies. The uniformity of crustal thickness (30 ± 2 km) in southern California is remarkable, and appears to be primarily the result of crustal extension in the Mojave Desert and ductile shear of the lower crust along the plate transform boundary. Southern California seismicity defines a broad zone of deformation that extends from the Borderland to the Mojave Desert (about 300 km). The geophysical framework of central and northern California records magmatism and accretion associated with the Mesozoic and Cenozoic subduction, late Cenozoic transform faulting, and in the Basin and Range to the east, extension. The crust thickens from about 20 km at the coast to as much as 55 km in the Sierra Nevada, and thins to about 30 km in the Basin and Range. Cross sections of the crust show that seismic velocities and densities vary significantly over short distances perpendicular to the coast, reflecting processes that include the accretion of oceanic sediments and igneous crust, and significant lateral motion of crustal blocks. Maximum hypocentral depths in central California become deeper as the crust thickens to the west, but seismicity is low beneath the Great Valley and Sierra Nevada, which together appear to form a relatively undeforming block. The lower crust of the Pacific Coastal States has a high average seismic velocity (6.7 km/sec or greater), which probably is the product of tectonic underplating of oceanic crust and/or magmatic underplating by a basaltic melt.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/MEM172-p129","usgsCitation":"Mooney, W.D., and Weaver, C.S., 1989, Regional The emphasis in each section is on a description of data, the principles behind the analysis techniques, and the assumptions and uncertainties in interpretation. Rather than focusing on future directions in seismology, the goal here is to summarize past and current practice as a companion to the review papers in this volume.

Reliable earthquake hypocenters and focal mechanisms require seismograph locations with a broad distribution in azimuth and distance from the earthquakes; a recording within one focal depth of the epicenter provides excellent hypocentral depth control. For earthquakes of magnitude greater than 4.5, waveform modeling methods may be used to determine source parameters. The seismic moment tensor provides the most complete and accurate measure of earthquake source parameters, and offers a dynamic picture of the faulting process.

Methods for determining the Earth’s structure from natural sources exist for local, regional, and teleseismic sources. One-dimensional models of structure are obtained from body and surface waves using both forward and inverse modeling. Forward-modeling methods include consideration of seismic amplitudes and waveforms, but lack the formal resolution estimates obtained with inverse methods. Two- and three-dimensional lithospheric models are derived using various inverse methods, but at present most of these methods consider only traveltimes of body waves.

Controlled-source studies of the Earth’s structure are generally divided by method into seismic refraction/wide-angle reflection and seismic reflection studies. Seismic refraction profiles are usually interpreted in terms of two-dimensional structure by forward modeling of traveltimes and amplitudes. The refraction method gives excellent estimates of seismic velocities, but relatively low resolution of structure. Formal resolution estimates are not possible for models derived from forward modeling, but informal estimates can be obtained by perturbing the best-fitting model. Inversion methods for seismic refraction data for one-dimensional models are well established, and two- and three-dimensional methods, including tomography, have recently been developed.

Seismic reflection data provide the highest resolution of crustal structure, and have provided many important geological insights in the past decade. The acquisition and processing of these data have been greatly advanced by the hydrocarbon exploration industry. However, reliable crustal velocity control is generally lacking, and the origin of deep crustal reflections remains unclear, resulting in nonunique interpretations. A new form of lithospheric seismology has recently emerged that combines the advantages of seismic refraction and seismic reflection profiles, and the distinction between the two methods is steadily diminishing.

Major challenges for future work will be the collection of data that are more densely sampled in space, and the development of interpretation methods that provide quantitative estimates of the uncertainties in the calculated models.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/MEM172-p11","usgsCitation":"Mooney, W.D., 1989, Seismic methods for determining earthquake source parameters and lithospheric structure: GSA Memoirs, v. 172, p. 11-34, https://doi.org/10.1130/MEM172-p11.","productDescription":"24 p.","startPage":"11","endPage":"34","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":374962,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"172","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1989-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mooney, Walter D. 0000-0002-5310-3631 mooney@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5310-3631","contributorId":3194,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mooney","given":"Walter","email":"mooney@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":789534,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is not intended to serve as a first primer of natural resource economics. The purpose of including this discussion is to introduce the reader to the fact that specialized language and analytic techniques are used in this field, and that summary discussion of these techniques are not available in introductory or intermediate level economics textbooks.
\n
\n
A key difficulty in economic analysis lies in the need that economists have to express common-sense terms such as \"demand\" or \"supply\" in a precise way; this facilitates the interpretation of data and is a powerful aid in making internally consistent, policy analysis. Natural resource economists would like to find a consistent, intuitively plausible measure of the social benefits conferred by some good or service. The most common fallacy noneconomists make in this field is to use expenditures as a measure of well-being or benefits. This measure is defective; expenditures may rise, while benefits fall. The following simple example should clarify the issue. Suppose that a certain population center, in the 1940's, is located 5 miles from a riverine recreation site. Suppose that a factory opens up 15 miles away from the site during the 1950's, and closes at the end of the 1960's; and that during this 20-year period, the bulk of this region's populace resides 15 miles from the site, close to the factory. In the 1970's, the populace of the region returns to the old population center, 5 miles from the recreation site. The benefits conferred by the site diminished during the 1950's and 1960's, even though travel (and even total) expenditures associated with the use of the site may have risen during this period.
\n
\n
Both intuition and formal analysis suggest that accurate estimates of benefits conferred by a good or service provide quantitative indices of the availability of good substitutes for the good or service in question., The fewer low-priced substitutes, the greater the benefits conferred by the good. The prices (quantities) of available substitutes may be needed to specify empirically estimated demand (supply) curves. If so, omission of these variables will produce biased estimates of net benefits conferred if the approach used to estimate social benefits is based on the shape and position of an empirically estimated demand (supply) curve. In general, a good grasp of the meaning of both demand and supply (curves) is needed to produce sound estimates of benefits conferred by some commodity. Demand and supply curves are discussed in the following section that deals with various techniques for estimating benefits conferred by outdoor recreation sites.
\n
\n
With wetlands functions and resources, the divergence between large total values and very low (zero) marginal values lies behind much of the controversy as to the appropriate procedure for imputing values to wetlands preservation benefits. If some type of wetland habitat is not a limiting factor in the production of some target wildlife species, the marginal value product of that habitat type is zero. The total social marginal product of the wetlands habitat type or complex may be very large, but if the removal of the last unit does not diminish total output, reallocating the land to more valuable economic activities increases social welfare.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, Research and Development","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Douglas, A.J., 1989, Annotated bibliography of economic literature on wetlands, vii, 67.","productDescription":"vii, 67","numberOfPages":"74","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":293257,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5406d9c2e4b044dc0e828907","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Douglas, Aaron J.","contributorId":46879,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Douglas","given":"Aaron","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":499847,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

When compared to studies conducted in the canal prior to lining, or in other unlined areas, these data suggest reductions in species diversity (-14.3 to -62.5%), density (+8.9 to =83.8%), and biomass (-30.1 to -91.2%).  These data support speculations that numbers of river-adapted fish would remain relatively high in a concrete-lined canal, but lentic and cover-oriented fishes such as centrarchis would decline.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Arizona Academy of Science","publisherLocation":"Tucson, AZ","usgsCitation":"Mueller, G., Bryant, G., and Burke, T., 1989, Changes in fish communities following concrete lining of the Coachella Canal, southeastern California: Journal of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science, v. 23, no. 1, p. 1-6.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"6","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":293348,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Imperial County","otherGeospatial":"Coachella Canal","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -116.1063,32.6186 ], [ -116.1063,33.4338 ], [ -114.4629,33.4338 ], [ -114.4629,32.6186 ], [ -116.1063,32.6186 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"23","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"542a74b6e4b01535cb4274ee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mueller, Gordon","contributorId":7729,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mueller","given":"Gordon","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":500029,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bryant, Gary","contributorId":95810,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bryant","given":"Gary","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":500031,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Burke, Tom","contributorId":42526,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burke","given":"Tom","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":500030,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
