Although analysis of the data is limited somewhat by instrumental problems, the increase in current speed, which ranged from 2 to 25 cm/sec, is correlated with a broadband increase in the noise level at frequencies below 10 Hz. Intermittent periods of narrow-band 8-Hz noise, which were also observed, are not correlative with bottom currents and were tentatively attributed to passing ships. Details of the mechanism of generation of the background noise cannot be determined from the present data set.
","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of America","doi":"10.1785/BSSA0750041195","usgsCitation":"Trehu, A.M., 1985, A note on the effect of bottom currents on an ocean bottom seismometer: Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, v. 75, no. 4, p. 1195-1204, https://doi.org/10.1785/BSSA0750041195.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1195","endPage":"1204","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":296758,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":296757,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/ssa/bssa/article/75/4/1195/118796/A-note-on-the-effect-of-bottom-currents-on-an"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Blake Plateau","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.068359375,\n              32.54681317351514\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.9921875,\n              32.58384932565662\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.080078125,\n              30.29701788337205\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.8701171875,\n              30.06909396443887\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.068359375,\n              32.54681317351514\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"75","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5492b73ce4b00eda8915ad05","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Trehu, Anne M.","contributorId":49884,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Trehu","given":"Anne","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":6680,"text":"Oregon State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":536880,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Copper, Mo, Pb, Zn, SO42−, and pH were determined in the waters; Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn were determined in the sediments. In addition, copper in five partial extractions from the sediments was determined. Geochemical contrast (anomaly-to-background quotient) was the principal criterion by which the effectiveness of the two media and the five extractions were judged.

Among the distribution patterns of metals in stream water, that of copper most clearly delineates the known porphyry copper deposits and yields the longest discernable dispersion train. The distribution patterns of Mo, Pb, and Zn in water show little relationship to the known mineralization. The distribution of SO42− in water delineates the copper deposits and also the more extensive pyrite alteration in the district; its recognizable downstream dispersion train is substantially longer than those of the metals, either in water or sediment. Low pH values in small tributaries delineate areas of known sulfide mineralization.

The distribution patterns of copper in sediments clearly delineate the known deposits, and the dispersion trains are longer than those of copper in water.

The partial determinations of copper related to secondary iron and manganese oxides yield the strongest geochemical contrasts and longest recognizable dispersion trains. Significantly high concentrations of molybdenum in sediments were found at only three sites, all within one-half km downstream of the known copper deposits. The distribution patterns of lead and zinc in sediments are clearly related to the known primary lead-zinc haloes around the copper deposits. S. Bureau of Mines from 1926 to 1929. Samples from seven drill cores from a retorted oil-shale waste pile were analyzed to determine 1) the chemical and mineral composition of the retorted oil shale and 2) variations in the composition that could be attributed to weathering. Unweathered, freshly-mined samples of oil shale from the Mahogany zone of the Green River Formation and slope wash collected away from the waste pile were also analyzed for comparison. The waste pile is composed of oil shale retorted under either low-temperature (400-500 degree C) or high-temperature (750 degree C) conditions. The results of the analyses show that the spent shale within the waste pile contains higher concentrations of most elements relative to unretorted oil shale.","largerWorkTitle":"Oil Shale Symposium Proceedings","conferenceTitle":"Eighteenth Oil Shale Symposium Proceedings.","conferenceLocation":"Grand Junction, CO, USA","language":"English","publisher":"Colorado Sch of Mines","publisherLocation":"Golden, CO, USA","usgsCitation":"Tuttle, M., Dean, W.E., and Ackerman, D.J., 1985, EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF WEATHERING ON A 50-YEAR OLD RETORTED OIL-SHALE WASTE PILE, RULISON EXPERIMENTAL RETORT, COLORADO., in Oil Shale Symposium Proceedings, Grand Junction, CO, USA, p. 338-346.","startPage":"338","endPage":"346","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220342,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a046ae4b0c8380cd50986","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Gary James H.","contributorId":128340,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Gary James H.","id":536261,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Tuttle, Michele L. mtuttle@usgs.gov","contributorId":1028,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tuttle","given":"Michele L.","email":"mtuttle@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":365020,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dean, Walter E. dean@usgs.gov","contributorId":1801,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dean","given":"Walter","email":"dean@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":365021,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ackerman, Daniel J.","contributorId":9286,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ackerman","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":365022,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

S. A.","docAbstract":"At Yellowstone National Park, the deep permeability and fluid circulation are probably controlled and maintained by repeated brittle fracture of rocks in response to local and regional stress. Focal depths of earthquakes beneath the Yellowstone caldera suggest that the transition from brittle fracture to quasi-plastic flow takes place at about 3 to 4 km. The maximum temperature likely to be attained by the hydrothermal system is 350 to 450 degree C, the convective thermal output is about 5. 5 multiplied by 10**9 watts, and the minimum average thermal flux is about 1800 mW/m**2 throughout 2,500 km**2. The average thermal gradient between the heat source and the convecting hydrothermal system must be at least 700 to 1000 degree C/km. Crystallization and partial cooling of about 0. 082 km**3 of basalt or 0. 10 km**3 of rhyolite annually could furnish the heat discharged in the hot-spring system. The Yellowstone magmatic-hydrothermal system as a whole appears to be cooling down, in spite of a relatively large rate of inflation of the Yellowstone caldera.","conferenceTitle":"1985 International Symposium on Geothermal Energy, International Volume.","language":"English","publisher":"Geothermal Resources Council","publisherLocation":"Davis, CA, USA","isbn":"093441288X","usgsCitation":"Fournier, R., and Pitt, A., 1985, YELLOWSTONE MAGMATIC-HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEM, U. We found little difference in trace element content between the chipped rock rind and whole-rock gossan samples. Gossans derived from disseminated sulfides were found to have a lower trace element content as well as a narrower range of values than did gossans derived from massive sulfides. Extreme differences in trace element concentrations in field duplicates of both chip and whole-rock gossan samples due to variations within the gossan bodies prevented use of the data at individual sampling sites for areal pattern studies. A computer program (REM), which uses a cell concept and groups the analysis of gossan at each mine, was used to characterize the trace element content. The gossan at the Mammoth mine had the highest anomaly magnitude and the highest element magnitudes for the most elements. Gossan at the Spread Eagle mine had a much different assemblage of elements relative to the other mines studied and had the lowest anomaly magnitude.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.80.8.2206","issn":"03610128","usgsCitation":"Sanzolone, R.F., and Domenico, J.A., 1985, Trace element content of gossans at four mines in the West Shasta massive sulfide district: Economic Geology, v. 80, no. 8, p. 2206-2212, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.80.8.2206.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"2206","endPage":"2212","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222296,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"80","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1985-12-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb639e4b08c986b326b36","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sanzolone, R. Two approaches for its removal have been taken. The first involves removal of iron by extraction with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) from hydrochloric acid medium, leaving the analytes in the aqueous phase. The second consists of reduction of iron(III) to iron(II) by ascorbic acid to minimize its extraction into MIBK, so that the analytes may be isolated by extraction. Elements of interest can then be determined using the aqueous solution or the organic extract, as appropriate. Operating factors such as the concentration of hydrochloric acid, amounts of iron present, number of extractions, the presence or absence of a salting-out agent, and the optimum ratio of ascorbic acid to iron have been determined. Most of them lie at least partially in the lacustrine facies of their host formations which implies the existence of closed basins created by contemporaneous tectonic activity. Application of this technique to striped bass in Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay provided evidence for reduced survival in the life cycle. If adult fecundity and survival have remained constant, first‐year survival declined significantly from 1969 to 1983, and averaged less than that needed for replacement for the last 10 years. Treatment of the individual spawning grounds separately indicated that the downward trend in survival for the pooled data was the result of declines in the upper bay and, to a lesser extent, in the Choptank River. Alternatively, if first‐year survival and adult fecundity were assumed to have remained constant, an annual decline of about 1.9% in adult survival would have been required to produce the observed trend in the pooled year‐class data. This would be consistent with increased fishing mortality and implies declining recruitment because of declining stock size. Continuing declines in first‐year or adult survival would eliminate the Maryland striped bass stock and the fishery it supports. The regressions of reported landings on the indices of ages 2–5 striped bass for the periods 1964–1973 and 1974–1983 indicated that mortality in the fishable stock increased between the two periods. These results support the use of the juvenile indices for monitoring recruitment into the population and as a basis for management decisions.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1985)114<92:RBRCLA>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Goodyear, C., 1985, Relationship between reported commercial landings and abundance of young striped bass in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 114, no. 1, p. 92-96, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1985)114<92:RBRCLA>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"92","endPage":"96","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130752,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland","otherGeospatial":"Chesapeake Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.45137515753754,\n              39.490431843405645\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.58379606562652,\n              38.66690029793358\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.4943486933714,\n              37.089918804712\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.96462427284425,\n              37.121312200179204\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.86444692063253,\n              37.54276135963376\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.6426165939144,\n              37.91879819208148\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.7857193310846,\n              39.6502389229056\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.45137515753754,\n              39.490431843405645\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"114","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a5fe4b07f02db6348e7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Goodyear, C.P.","contributorId":11538,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goodyear","given":"C.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":319448,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Fifty of these references originated in the Soviet Union, where most of the initial work on biogeochemical exploration for Au had been done. The 15 topics in the index range from agriculture (Au in crop plants) to silver.

As an introduction to the bibliography, we have briefly described some examples of applications and difficulties in using plants. These examples are drawn from the literature and from field experience. Because of the generally low Au concentrations found in plants, the analysis of plant tissue is critical to the successful application of the biogeochemical method of prospecting. Neuron activation analysis is the most widely used method to detect Au in plants, due largely to its sensitivity; levels in the parts per billion range are easily attained. Two general types of sampling media are used in prospecting for Au: humus and living plants. Humus has been widely used in Canada, but the sampling of plants has increased there and elsewhere in recent years. Our use of douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) at a Au-bearing stockwork in Idaho is a prime example. A maximum Au concentration of 14 μg/g (ppm) was detected in the wood ash of this coniferous tree, well above the normal concentration of ≈ 0.15 μg/g. Among shrubs that might be useful in Au prospecting, we recommend sagebrush or wormwood (genus Artemisia), because it is extremely responsive to concealed mineralization. It has been used extensively in the Soviet Union and could be used in areas of the western United States where disseminated Au occurrences might be located.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0375-6742(85)90039-1","issn":"03756742","usgsCitation":"Erdman, J.A., and Olson, J.C., 1985, The use of plants in prospecting for gold: A brief overview with a selected bibliography and topic index: Journal of Geochemical Exploration, v. 24, no. 3, p. 281-304, https://doi.org/10.1016/0375-6742(85)90039-1.","productDescription":"24 p.","startPage":"281","endPage":"304","numberOfPages":"24","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220403,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"24","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb194e4b08c986b32534c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Erdman, J. Despite a number of extensive field studies of the Orca Group, reliable data on the age of the unit have been elusive. On the basis of sparse paleontologic and radiometric data, the sequence was regarded as Paleocene and early Eocene(?) age (Winkler and Plafker, 1981). New paleontologic data from fossil localities shown in figure 49 suggest that some strata assigned to the Orca Group are of middle Eocene age and possibly as young as late Eocene or Oligocene. However, data suggesting an age younger than about 50 Ma appear to be incompatible with radiometrically determined ages for plutons that intrude the Orca Group.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"The United States Geological Survey in Alaska: Accomplishments during 1984 (Circular 967)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Alexandria, VA","doi":"10.3133/70180306","usgsCitation":"Plafker, G., Keller, G., Nelson, S.W., Dumoulin, J.A., and Miller, M.L., 1985, Summary of data on the age of the Orca Group, Alaska: A section in The United States Geological Survey in Alaska: Accomplishments during 1984: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 967, 3 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70180306.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"74","endPage":"76","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":334111,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":334110,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1985/0967/report.pdf#page=88","text":"Start page in larger work"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Orca Group","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"588b198be4b0ad67323f986c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Plafker, George","contributorId":3920,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Plafker","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":661135,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Keller, Gerta","contributorId":16419,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keller","given":"Gerta","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":661136,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nelson, Steven W.","contributorId":74024,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":661137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dumoulin, Julie A. 0000-0003-1754-1287 dumoulin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1754-1287","contributorId":203209,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dumoulin","given":"Julie","email":"dumoulin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":661138,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Miller, Marti L. 0000-0003-0285-4942 mlmiller@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0285-4942","contributorId":561,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Marti","email":"mlmiller@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":661139,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}
