Models of crustal structure that satisfy the limited available seismic-refraction data and explain the gravity high over the gneiss terrane permit the hypothesis that the core metamorphic complexes are the surface expression of a zone of dense infrastructure that makes up the upper 20 km (kilometers) of the crust within the crystalline belt. \r\n\r\nThe Omineca crystalline belt is characterized regionally by low aeromagnetic relief. The gneiss domes and biotite- and biotite-muscovite granites are generally marked by low magnetic relief, whereas hornblende-biotite granites often cause magnetic highs. These models will enable water-resources managers to evaluate efficiently the effect of present and future water-resources developments on streamflows at six locations along the West Branch Susquehanna River. The models utilize a unit-response, convolution technique of flowrouting based on diffusion analogy and multilinearization. Estimates of streamflow from the intervening areas of each reach, wave celerity, and wave-dispersion coefficients are the model parameters. These were adjusted until simulated outflow hydrographs and flow statistics adequately approximated those for observed flow data. The overall accuracy of the models is considered good. Average, absolute, daily flow errors between observed and simulated flows ranged from 8.82 to 13.70 percent for the periods that were evaluated. Volume errors for the same periods were between -0.01 and 1.61 percent. The models are scaled to produce an index of habitat suitability between 0 (unsuitable habitat) to 1 (optimally suitable habitat) for freshwater areas of the continental United States. Other habitat suitability models found in the literature are also included. The geologic feature is commonly known in the literature as the Cap au Ores Fault or Cap au Ores Uplift. A second objective was to demonstrate that the marine seismic system could be used successfully for making relatively deep penetration seismic-reflection surveys on inland waterways with shallow water depths (less than 10 meters) and organic sediments on the waterway bottom.</p><p>The survey was made by agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), St. Louis District, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS used a specially equipped, trailerable, 38-ft aluminum boat for the work. The quality of the survey records can be classified as from fair to good. Seismic-reflection events could be interpreted in the upper 200 ms of data. Five reflecting horizons with little slope were recorded between Mississippi River Miles 195 and 210 without any evidence of faulting of the magnitude (50 to 100 m) suggested by the Shannon and Wilson report (1980). Minor faulting and buried channeling could be interpreted.</p><p>This survey demonstrated the value and economy of obtaining deeper penetration seismic data on inland water using an offshore marine, CDP, digital, multichannel seismic-reflection system. On-going modifications in field procedure, equipment configuration, equipment, and data processing will further improve the results obtained with such equipment. Molluscan fossils are abundant in parts of the core and indicate an age span of early Coniacian to the middle Cenomanian. The species is associated with streams, ponds, lakes, mud flats, swamps, ahd freshwater and salt marshes.
