The area is in the northwest quarter of the Last Chance Range 15-minute quadrangle and occupies the area between 117 39 and 117 45 longitude and 37 10 and 37 15 latitudP.. The area studied lies between 5000 ( 1525 m) and 6000 ( 1830 m) feet above sea level. Relief isgenerally moderate but can be extreme in some places, as at Hanging Rock Canyon (plate 1). The climate is arid, and there are no active streams in the area. The range fronts east and west of the area are precipitous and incised by many steep canyons, whereas the range crest has relatively low relief. The old abandoned town and mine site of Crater 1 ie in this area of low relief. Access to the Crater area is by paved and dirt roads from Big Pine to the west or from the north end of the Death Valley National Monument to the southeast.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Generalized channel response in the studied basins included scour in steep, low-order channels and moderate fill in higher order channels. Large volumes of channel fill were noted along some channels but this was limited to reaches that received large volumes of colluvium from debris flows and streamside debris slides. The local nature of these effects on channel geometry contrasts with widespread depositional effects observed following major storms in steep terrain in other parts of California. The morphology of most intermediate and high-order channels in the study area appear to have been formed at least as much by events with moderated recurrence intervals as by extreme events. Along low-order channels that were scoured and along isolated reaches of some intermediate and high-order channels where fill was severe, however, storm effects will probably persist for long periods of time. Since the localized effects of high magnitude storms can persist longer than the recurrence interval of the storms themselves, channel morphology throughout the area probably reflects the effects of a number of storms. The Wilcox Group in the eastern part of the county has adequate supplies to meet the expected water demands in the foreseeable future. The thicker zones of the Wilcox Group can supply yields in excess of 500 gallons per minute. The Midway Group can supply yields in excess of 100 gallons per minute from the Tehuacana Member of the Kincaid Formation. This represents the largest well yields from the Midway Group in Texas. The Midway Group elsewhere in the State is mostly a poor water producer and is not considered an aquifer. The Taylor Marl and Navarro Group furnish only small quantities of ground water to wells in the western part of the county where these units crop out. The Hosston and Travis Peak Formations are present at depths in excess of 2,000 feet. These formations, which contain slightly saline water in the western part of the county, could be expected to produce water with a temperature of about 150&deg;F that might be used for heating purposes.</p>\n<p>About 0.9 million gallons per day of ground water was used for all purposes in 1980. This use has declined since 1955 but is expected to increase as additional public-supply and industrial wells are being developed. The Wilcox Group is capable of annually yielding at least 14,000 acre-feet or 11.6 million gallons per day of water to wells on a long-term basis.</p>\n<p>Generally, the ground water is of acceptable quality for most uses. Relatively high dissolved-solids and iron concentrations are the major water-quality problems. Water-quality problems that may be the result of man's activities are limited to a small oilfield area near Mexia.</p>\n<p>Lignite mining from the Wilcox Group is expected to take place in the foreseeable future. In response the artesian head declined 180-240 ft. The land surface subsided 12.7 ft in San Jose, due to compaction of the fine-grained compressible beds. The subsidence resulted in flooding of lands, and the compaction of the sediments caused compressional failure of many well casings. From 1967 to 1975, the artesian head recovered 70 to 100 feet due to a fivefold increase in surface water imports, favorable local water supply, decreased withdrawal, and increased recharge. In 1960, the Geological Survey installed extensometers in core holes 1,000 ft deep in San Jose and Sunnyvale. Measurements of compaction of the confined aquifer system obtained from these extensometers demonstrate the marked decrease in rate of compaction in response to the major head recovery since 1967. In San Jose the rate decreased from about 1 ft/yr in 1961 to 0.1 ft/yr in 1973. The subsidence has been stopped by raising the artesian head in the aquifers until it equaled or exceeded the maximum pore pressures in the fine-grained beds. However, the subsidence will recommence if the artesian head is drawn down appreciably below the levels of 1971-73. In order to assess potential flood hazards, study channel adjustments, and construct a sediment budget for the perturbed drainages on the east and southeast flanks of the volcano, channel cross sections were monumented and surveyed on Pine Creek, Muddy River, and Smith Creek during September and October of 1980. Additional cross sections were monumented and surveyed on Swift Creek, Bean Creek, and Clearwater Creek during the summer of 1981. The network of 88 channel cross sections has been resurveyed annually. Selected cross sections have been surveyed more frequently, following periods of higher flow. The repetitive cross-section surveys provide measurements of bank erosion or accretion and of channel erosion or aggradation. The report presents channel cross-section profiles constructed from the survey data collected during water years 1980-82.
