Most of the basic principles of inorganic-chemical hydrogeology were first established by investigations of organic-free, regional-scale systems for which simplifying assumptions could be made. The problems of groundwater contamination are causing a shift of emphasis to microscale systems that are dominated by organic-chemical reactions and that are providing an impetus for the study of naturally occurring and manmade organic material. Along with the decrease in scale, physical and chemical heterogeneity become major controls. Current investigations and those selected from the literature demonstrate that heterogeneity increases in importance as the study site decreases from regional-scale to macroscale to microscale. Increased understanding of regional-scale flow systems is demonstrated by selection of investigations of carbonate and volcanic aquifers to show how applications of present-day concepts and techniques can identify controlling chemical reactions and determine their rates; identify groundwater flow paths and determine flow velocity; and determine aquifer characteristics. The role of chemical hydrogeology in understanding geologic processes of macroscale systems is exemplified by selection of investigations in coastal aquifers. Phenomena associated with the mixing zone generated by encroaching sea water include an increase in heterogeneity of permeability, diagenesis of minerals, and formation of geomorphic features, such as caves, lagoons, and bays. Ore deposits of manganese and uranium, along with a simulation model of ore-forming fluids, demonstrate the influence of heterogeneity and of organic compounds on geochemical reactions associated with genesis of mineral deposits. In microscale environments, importance of heterogeneity and consequences of organic reactions in determining the distribution and concentrations cf. constituents are provided by several studies, including infiltration of sewage effluent and migration of creosote in coastal plain aquifers. Although no quantitative probabilities are attached to any of the potential volcanic hazards, the USGS bulletin warns that \"sooner or later a volcano in California will erupt again and the ever-expanding use of area near volcnoes increases the potential impact of an eruption on the state's economy and on the health and safety of its The first displacement, at about the beginning of November, was accompanied by a surface tilt representing deep vertical motion or distributed strain. This movement may have been part of a more regional event that also involved the southern San Andreas fault, although the evidence there is questionable. The later surface offset was triggered, probably by the second main shock of the 24 November earthquakes located in the Superstition Hills, about 37 km northwest of the Imperial fault. Although accurate magnitude values have not been determined for many of the pre-instrumental earthquakes, it is believed that all of the earthquakes presented on this map have magnitudes of 5.0 or greater.</p><p>Symbols are plotted at epicentral locations, and symbol sizes are scaled into three magnitude categories. Within each category, duplicate epicenter locations have been eliminated. There are 2,351 separate epicenter locations, representing 2,480 earthquakes shown on this map.&nbsp;</p><p>Because of recent increases in the number of quality of seisomgraph networks, the accuracy of epicentral parameters of earthquakes occurring since the mid-1960s is greater than that of earlier earthquakes. Earthquakes occurring since 1965 are distinguished on this map from earlier events by the intensity of color of the epicentral symbol, as indicated below.&nbsp;</p><p>An extremely violent earthquake occurred north of Prince William Sound on Good Friday, March 27, 1964. This earthquake had a surface-wave magnitude of 8.4 and a moment magnitude of 9.2. The earthquake also generated a large sea wave (tsunami) which devastated many waterfront developments. The earthquake and its accompanying tsunami caused severe damage along Prince William Sound, Cook Inlet, and on the Kenai Peninsula.&nbsp;</p><p>On the map, the epicenter of the 1964 earthquake is Mortality and swimming behavior were assessed daily for larvae exposed to serial dilutions of water collected from the Santee, Congaree, and Wateree rivers. After 96 h, cumulative mortality was 90% in the Wateree River, and a dose–response pattern was evident in serial dilutions of the water. Larvae exposed to water from the Santee and Congaree rivers swam lethargically, but no appreciable mortality was observed. Acutely toxic concentrations of inorganic contaminants were not detected in the rivers; however, pentachloroanisole, a methylated by-product of pentachlorophenol, was twice as high in the Wateree River as it was in the other two rivers.
