Within this system, the eastern part of the Tulare aquifer, which has an area of approximately 681 square miles, was simulated by means of a numerical ground-water flow model. The model estimates the yearly average recharge rate for that part of the aquifer lying west of the James River to be approximately 23,000 acre-feet per year. This rate is considerably more than the estimated 1978 yearly average irrigation pumpage rate of 9,800 acre-feet per year. It is expected that, since pumping will reduce discharge from the aquifer through evapotranspiration and flow to the James River, this part of the aquifer would be able to supply irrigation water at recent pumpage rates for an indefinite period. For that part of the aquifer lying east of the river, estimated recharge is 6,800 acre-feet per year; a rate slightly smaller than the estimated 1978 yearly average irrigation pumpage rate of 7,200 acre-feet per year. It is estimated that this part of the aquifer would be able to supply irrigation water at 7,200 acre-feet per year for approximately 50 years, at which time excessive drawdown would begin to cause reduced well yields at several locations. Fort Carson purchases about 3,400 acre-feet of treated water annually from the city of Colorado Springs. The major streams entering Fort Carson have an estimated average annual discharge of 6,240 acre-feet of water per year upstream from diversions for municipal and domestic water supplies. The streamflow is unevenly distributed in time and consequently not dependable as a large or sole source of water. Ground water is available from alluvial and bedrock aquifers. Wells with yields greater than 100 gallons per minute can be expected from the alluvium along Rock and Little Fountain Creeks and from some parts of the Dakota-Purgatoire aquifer. The quality of surface water entering Fort Carson is generally suitable for irrigation and drinking but deteriorates eastward across Fort Carson. Water from the alluvial aquifer along Rock and Little Fountain Creeks in the eastern part of Fort Carson contains fluoride in concentrations exceeding drinking-water standards. Water from the Dakota-Purgatoire aquifer characteristically contains radiochemical constituents in concentrations that exceed drinking-water standards. Natural streamflows that occurred during the three droughts were compared to the multiple-use and water-quality streamflows recommended by State agencies. A reservoir model was used to investigate the effects of John Redmond Reservoir on the natural streamflows. The regulated streamflow produced from the reservoir model then was compared to the multiple-use and water-quality streamflows. The regulated streamflows usually satisfied the multiple-use and water-quality streamflows more often than the natural streamflows. Frequency analysis made on the natural and regulated streamflows showed that the number of days of low flow (less than 30 cubic feet per second) were reduced by the regulated streamflows, which aided in the achievement of the multiple-use and water-quality streamflows goals. The reservoir model was used to determine if sufficient storage was available in John Redmond Reservoir to modify the natural streamflows in order to satisfy the multiple-use and water-quality streamflow recommendations. Additional storage of 15,400 acre-feet was estimated to be needed to maintain the multiple-use streamflows at Parsons.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri844292","usgsCitation":"Hart, R.J., and Stiles, T.C., 1984, Availability of natural and regulated streamflows for instream uses during historical droughts, lower Neosho River, southeastern Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 84-4292, vi, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri844292.","productDescription":"vi, 42 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":411378,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36135.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":56433,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4292/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124297,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1984/4292/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas, Missouri","otherGeospatial":"lower Neosho River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.967,\n              38.428\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.967,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.072,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.072,\n              38.428\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.967,\n              38.428\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d833","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hart, R. Four types of ground water were identified in the study area. Type 1 is sodium bicarbonate water. Type 2 is sodium chloride water with varying quantities of calcium and magnesium. Type 3 water contains sodium and chloride in significantly larger concentrations than Type 2. Type 4 water is the brine being injected into brine-disposal wells. Contamination of the alluvial aquifer is indicated by a brine-freshwater interface in the alluvium, by downstream increase in chloride concentration of the Poplar River, and by downstream change in water type of the Poplar River. Contamination also may be indicated by the distribution of iron and manganese concentrations in water from wells near a brine-disposal well. Possible sources of sodium chloride contamination in the alluvium are brine-disposal wells, pipelines, and storage or evaporation pits. The contamination can occur from leaks in the casing of disposal wells or in pipelines caused by the corrosive nature of the brine or from storage or evaporation pits that have been improperly sealed or have sustained tears in the sealing material. Before extensive irrigation in the 1960's, recharge from precipitation was balanced by natural discharge. Baseflow was estimated as approximately 118 cubic feet per second in 1980. A finite-difference digital model simulated flow in the aquifer. Recharge was adjusted so that 1980 baseflow was 118 cubic feet per second. Recharge in the eastern half of the modeled area was 0.45 inch per year and one-half this value in the western half. Three hydraulic conductivity zones were used: 19.3 feet per day in the east; 16.2 feet per day in the center; and 8.28 feet per day in the west. A specific yield of 14.7 percent was used. The calibrated model gave a mean difference between predevelopment modeled and measured heads of -0.044 foot. Using 1980 pumping rates, the model was used to predict 1993 and 2020 water in storage and saturated thickness. The calculated water in storage , in million acre-feet, in 1941 (predevelopment) was 135.2; in 1980, 121.9; in 1993, 112.7; and in 2020, 96.2. Chemical analyses used in data summaries were limited to those stored in the USGS computer system (WATSTORE). Information on documented instances of ground-water contamination and sources of potential contamination from land disposal of wastes was provided by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Available data provide an overview of ground water quality but may be insufficient for assessment of ground-water contamination from land disposal of wastes. Many sources of potential ground-water contamination (landfills, surface waste-storage impoundments, and buried tanks) are known. Some of these are probably causing local ground-water contamination that is not apparent from available regional data. Information needs for assessment of ground-water contamination from land disposal of wastes include improved understanding of both ground-water hydrology and the chemical behavior of specific contaminants in the environment. The average lake altitude was used as a reference above which flood volumes are related to lake geometry, watershed characteristics, and rainfall. Average altitude at surface-outflow lakes is related to the altitude of the lake surface shown on topographic maps, lake-outlet altitude, and annual rainfall. Average altitude at closed-basin lakes is related to the altitude of the lake surface shown on topographic maps. Flood volume above average altitude for surface-outflow lakes is related to lake geometry, watershed characteristics, and rainfall. The average standard error of estimate for regional relations of surface-outflow lakes ranges from 29 to 54 percent in the Central Lake District and from 50 to 58 percent in the Ocala Uplift District. The average standard error of estimate for regional relations of closed-basin lakes ranges from 22 to 40 percent. Regional relations for average altitude and flood volume above average altitude are used to weight station flood-altitude data. Tables comparing station, regional, and weighted lake flood altitudes are shown for 47 lakes used in the analysis. Flood elevations at the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant on the Columbia River, 5 mi upstream from the Cowlitz River, were simulated with a hydraulic routing model. The simulations are made for four Columbia River discharges in each of two scenarios, one in which Columbia River floods coincide with a mudflow and the other in which Columbia River floods follow a mudflow sediment deposit upstream from the Cowlitz River. In the first scenario, Manning 's roughness coefficients for clear water and for mudflow in the Columbia River are used; in the second scenario only clear water coefficients are used. The grade elevation at the power plant is 45 ft above sea level. The simulated elevations exceed 44 ft if the mudflow coincides with a Columbia River discharge that has a recurrence interval greater than 10 years (610,000 cu ft/sec); the mudflow is assumed to extend downstream from the Cowlitz River to the mouth of the Columbia River, and Manning 's roughness coefficients for a mudflow are used. The simulated elevation is 32 ft if the mudflow coincides with a 100-yr flood (820,000 cu ft/sec) and clear-water Manning 's coefficients are used throughout the entire reach of the Columbia River. The elevations exceed 45 ft if a flow exceeding the 2-yr peak discharge in the Columbia River (410,000 cu ft/sec) follows the deposit of 0.5 billion cu yd of mudflow sediment upstream of the Cowlitz River before there has been any appreciable scour or dredging of the deposit. In this simulation it is assumed that: (1) the top of the sediment deposited in the Columbia River is at an elevation of 30 ft at the mouth of the Cowlitz River, (2) the surface elevation of the sediment deposit decreases in an upstream direction at a rate of 2.5 ft/mi, and (3) clear water Manning 's coefficients apply to the entire modeled reach of the Columbia River. The area has low topographic relief that largely consists of gently sloping hills separated by broad expanses of tundra growing on unconsolidated surficial materials. Elevations range from sea level up to 475 m (1,456 ft.) at Mount Jarvis. Study of bedrock geology is constrained by a scarcity of exposures in most areas. Most hill tops are rubble-covered, and there are only a few stream outcrops. As a result many of the stratigraphic and structural relationships between rock units are inferred from similar relationships previously determined in other areas of the western Brooks Range where the rocks are better exposed (Curtis and others, 1982, 1983; Ellersieck and others, 1982, 1983; and Mayfield and others, 1982, 1983 a, b).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr84396","usgsCitation":"Mayfield, C., Ellersieck, I., and Tailleur, I., 1984, Reconnaissance geologic map of the Noatak C5, D5, D6, and D7 quadrangles, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-396, Report: 27 p.; 1 Plate: 37.07 x 42.23 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84396.","productDescription":"Report: 27 p.; 1 Plate: 37.07 x 42.23 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":397489,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13380.htm"},{"id":144182,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0396/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":419774,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0396/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":419775,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0396/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"63360","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Noatak C5, D5, D6, and D7 quadrangles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -165.6,\n              67.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -164,\n              67.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -164,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.6,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -165.6,\n              67.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a70e4b07f02db641347","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mayfield, C.F.","contributorId":95467,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mayfield","given":"C.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161042,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ellersieck, Inyo","contributorId":34914,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellersieck","given":"Inyo","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161040,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Tailleur, I.L.","contributorId":59027,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tailleur","given":"I.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161041,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Dissolved-solids, nitrate, fluoride, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium, iron, and manganese concentrations are summarized on a statewide basis. The major chemical-quality problem that limits the use of Wyoming ground-water is excessive dissolved-solids concentrations. The aquifers with the best quality water, based on the lowest median dissolved-solids concentration of water in aquifers with 20 or more sampled sites, are Holocene lacustrine deposits, the upper Testiary Ogallala Formation and Arikaree Formation, and the Mississippian Madison Limestone. The counties with the best quality water, based on the lowest median dissolved-solids concentrations are Teton County and Laramie County. Hot Springs County and Natrona County have the highest median dissolved-solids concentrations. About 3 percent of the nitrate concentrations of ground-water samples exceeded the national primary drinking-water standard of 10 milligrams per liter. Fluoride concentrations exceeded the national primary drinking-water standard in 14 percent of the ground-water samples. Except for selenium, toxic trace elements generally have not been found in concentrations in excess of the drinking-water standards. About 19 percent of the iron and about 30 percent of the manganese concentrations in ground-water samples exceeded the national secondary drinking-water standards. Preliminary results show sediments are typical of other San Francisco Bay study sites, ranging from coarse sands to fine silt-clays. The sediments are enriched in manganese and low in organic carbon; iron is moderately enriched, with acid-extractable iron concentrations of 162-3,521 micro-g/g. Sediment concentrations of silver, zinc, lead, and cadmium measured between April and July are reported. Previous area studies have shown increased concentrations during autumn and winter, a period not covered in the data set. Due to insufficient data, interpretations are incomplete. Clam-tissue burdens for silver and zinc are similar to those found in Corbicula from pristine areas. Lead concentrations are typically below the 2-micrograms/g detection level. The Mullica River basin covers 570 sq mi and is drained by numerous shallow streams. The water-table aquifer consists of sand and gravel intermixed with clay and silt. The computer model is based on a finite-difference method with stream-seepage equations coupled to the groundwater equation. The model was applied to the approximately steady-state conditions of March 1979. Initial estimates of streambed hydraulic conductance and aquifer hydraulic conductivity were adjusted until model water level matched measured water level within 5 ft for 41 of 42 wells. Also, model streamflow was within 20 percent of measured streamflow at 12 of 15 sites. The 5,000-ft grid spacing should be adequate for a future predictive model. The natural flow system is adequately simulated by a two-dimensional model. Each individual gaging station in the network is evaluated on the basis of selected rating factors. The factors relate to the need for information at the gaging stations, accuracy of data, economic aspects of operation, and usefulness of data as a basis for estimates at ungaged sites. The total score for the various factors provides a convenient basis for comparing relative importance of individual gaging stations. The rating-factor method is both flexible and definitive, but the point values that are assigned for each rating factor are somewhat subjective. A table of the point values and guidelines for assigning those values is presented. The geologic feature is commonly known in the literature as the Cap au Ores Fault or Cap au Ores Uplift. A second objective was to demonstrate that the marine seismic system could be used successfully for making relatively deep penetration seismic-reflection surveys on inland waterways with shallow water depths (less than 10 meters) and organic sediments on the waterway bottom.</p><p>The survey was made by agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), St. Louis District, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS used a specially equipped, trailerable, 38-ft aluminum boat for the work. The quality of the survey records can be classified as from fair to good. Seismic-reflection events could be interpreted in the upper 200 ms of data. Five reflecting horizons with little slope were recorded between Mississippi River Miles 195 and 210 without any evidence of faulting of the magnitude (50 to 100 m) suggested by the Shannon and Wilson report (1980). Minor faulting and buried channeling could be interpreted.</p><p>This survey demonstrated the value and economy of obtaining deeper penetration seismic data on inland water using an offshore marine, CDP, digital, multichannel seismic-reflection system. On-going modifications in field procedure, equipment configuration, equipment, and data processing will further improve the results obtained with such equipment. Future marine-style surveys conducted with the newly available hydraulic waterguns (80-, 200-, and 400-in3) would probably produce data that are a significant improvement over data obtained with the 15-in3 pneumatic watergun and 40-in3 airgun used during the 1980 survey. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8481","usgsCitation":"Tirey, G.B., Wise, R.A., and Winget, E.A., 1984, Common-depth-point seismic-reflection survey on the Mississippi River in the vicinity of Alton, Illinois: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-81, Report: i, 19 p.; 2 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8481.","productDescription":"Report: i, 19 p.; 2 Plates","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":39303,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0081/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145043,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0081/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39301,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0081/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39302,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0081/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":108420,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13570.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"13570"}],"country":"United States","state":"Illinois, Missouri","city":"Alton","otherGeospatial":"Mississippi River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -90.28633117675781,\n 38.81938114846882\n ],\n [\n -90.08857727050781,\n 38.81938114846882\n ],\n [\n -90.08857727050781,\n 38.909735925720305\n ],\n [\n -90.28633117675781,\n 38.909735925720305\n ],\n [\n -90.28633117675781,\n 38.81938114846882\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae5fc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tirey, G.
