As part of this study, a 5.82-square-mile area of the Little Conestoga Creek headwaters (Small Watershed) was monitored during 1984-86, prior to implementation of Best-Management Practices. This report describes the land use and hydrology of this study area and characterizes its surface-water and ground-water quality during the pre-Best-Management Practice phase. \r\n\r\nDuring base-flow conditions, median concentrations of dissolved nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen as nitrogen increased from 2.7 to 8.1 milligrams per liter as the stream flowed through the intensively-farmed carbonate valley. Median total phosphorus increased from 0.05 to 0.20 milligram per liter. Concentrations of dissolved nitrate nitrogen as nitrogen measured in ground water in carbonate rocks in the valley were as great as 25 milligrams per liter and consistently exceeded 10 milligrams per liter. \r\n\r\nStatistical analysis showed that it will require substantial reductions in concentrations and discharges of nitrogen and phosphorus in base flow to obtain statistically measurable improvements in water quality. If concentrations and discharges of total nitrogen in base flow at the five sites are reduced by 15 to 33 percent, and by 63 to 70 percent, respectively, then the Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney rank-sum test will be able to detect an improvement in water quality 95 percent of the time. Likewise, if concentrations of total phosphorus are reduced by 36 to 54 percent, or discharges of total phosphorus are reduced by 52 to 69 percent at the five sites, then an improvement in water quality will be able to be detected 95 percent of the time.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri904131","usgsCitation":"Fishel, D.K., Brown, M.J., Kostelnik, K.M., and Howse, M., 1992, Evaluation of agricultural best-management practices in the Conestoga River headwaters, Pennsylvania; description and water quality of the Little Conestoga Creek headwaters prior to the implementation of nutrient management: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 90-4131, viii, 68 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri904131.","productDescription":"viii, 68 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":54211,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1990/4131/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":126802,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1990/4131/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a69e4b07f02db63c687","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fishel, D. This study was conducted from 1986 to 1988 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources. Test holes NC-4 and NC-14 were drilled to depths of 1,898 and 1,837 feet below land surface, respectively. Geologic and hydrologic data collected during drilling included continuous core lithology, water-quality measurements, water levels, and estimates of aquifer yields from the water-bearing zones. Detailed petrological and microfaunal analyses of the cores were used to determine the mineralogical content, ages, and paleoenvironments of deposition.

Analysis of the core recovered from test hole NC-4 indicated that four geologic formations of middle Tertiary age were penetrated, these were in descending order: the Aymam6n Limestone, the Los Puertos Limestone, the Cibao Formation, and the Lares Limestone. The Tertiary formations are capped by surficial deposits of Quaternary age. Test hole NC-14 penetrated rocks of middle Tertiary age that included three geologic formations, these were in descending order: the AymamOn Limestone, the Los Puertos Limestone, and the Cibao Formation. These formations are overlain by surficial deposits of Quaternary age. In both test holes the Cibao Formation consisted of the undifferentiated Quebrada Arenas and the Rio Indio Limestone Members of the Cibao Formation and an unnamed mudstone unit.

Test hole NC-4 penetrated three water-bearing units: a water-table aquifer and two artesian aquifers. The specific conductance in the water-table aquifer ranged from 500 to 38,000 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius. The specific conductance ranged from 740 to 800 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius in the two artesian aquifers. The relative yield ranged from 120 to 195 gallons per minute in the water-table aquifer and from 60 to 195 gallons per minute in the artesian aquifers. The water level ranged from 81 to 89 feet below land surface in the water-table aquifer. In the artesian aquifers, water levels ranged from 22 feet below land surface to 88 feet above land surface.

Test hole NC-14 penetrated four water-bearing units: a water-table aquifer and three artesian aquifers. The specific conductance in the water-table aquifer ranged from 590 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius at a depth of 40 feet to 49,500 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius at 1,010 feet below land surface. In the artesian aquifers specific conductance was about 700 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius. A transient, three-dimensional, finite-difference ground-water flow model was developed to assess the response of the water table to various management alternatives. The modeled area is 551 square miles and includes the semiconfined and confined zones above and below the Corcoran Clay Member of the Tulare Formation of Pleistocene age. The model was calibrated using hydrologic data from 1972 to 1988 and was able to reproduce the average change in water-table altitude to within 4 percent. The calibrated model was extended to forecast to the year 2040 for various management alternatives including maintenance of present practices, land retirement, reduced recharge, increased ground-water pumping, combinations of these alternatives, and five alternatives proposed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The model indicates that if current rates of recharge and pumping (as determined from an analysis of 1980 water-budget data) are maintained, the total area subject to bare-soil evaporation will increase by more than 50 percent and drainflow will increase by 20 percent. Model results indicate that retirement of land will result in a water-table decline beneath the area retired, but the effect on adjacent areas will be small to negligible. The effects of reducing recharge or increasing ground-water pumping vary with the magnitude of the change relative to average conditions and the size of the area managed. The area of land subject to bare-soil evaporation and the amount of drainflow in the model area can be reduced by more than 40 and 50 percent, respectively, if (1) recharge is reduced by 40 percent (about 0.3 foot per year) in areas that currently use only surface water, and by 15 percent (an average of about O. 1 foot per year) in the remainder of the model area; (2) pumping is increased by 0.5 foot per year in areas that currently use surface and ground water.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nFor sale by the USGS Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri914193","usgsCitation":"Belitz, K., and Phillips, S., 1992, Simulation of water-table response to management alternatives, central part of the western San Joaquin Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 91-4193, v, 41 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri914193.","productDescription":"v, 41 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158249,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1991/4193/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54938,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1991/4193/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f7e4b07f02db5f1cc3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Belitz, K.R. 0000-0003-4481-2345","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4481-2345","contributorId":38992,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Belitz","given":"K.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195889,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Phillips, S.P.","contributorId":38172,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Phillips","given":"S.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195888,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Increased pumpage could cause further salinization of the ground-water resources.

The Savannah and Ogeechee Rivers can be considered potential water-supply sources for the Savannah, Ga., area, on the basis of historic stream flow records and water-quality constituents and properties examined. Analyses of stream-discharge data indicate that the minimum average discharges for 7 consecutive days for a 10-year recurrence interval (7010), was 5,460 cubic feet per second (ft3/s) at Savannah River near Clyo, Ga., and 192 ft3/s at Ogeechee River near Eden, Ga. For example, 90 percent of the time, flows in excess of the 7010 discharges are about 900 and 200 ft3/s, respectively. However, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, imposes a non-depletable flow criterion; thus, the actual quantity of water available for withdrawal probably would be less than flows in excess of minimum flow criteria, such as the 7Q10.

A ground-water flow model was developed and used in conjunction with other previously calibrated models in the coastal area to simulate the effects of additional pumping on water levels near sites of seawater encroachment at Hilton Head Island and saltwater intrusion at Brunswick. Based on model simulations and the constraint of preventing water-level declines at locations of encroachment and intrusion, the potential of the Upper Floridan aquifer to supply additional water in the Savannah area is limited under present (1985) hydrologic conditions. The water-supply potential ranges from less than 1 million gallons per day (Mgal/d) in Liberty, McIntosh, most of Bryan, and southern Chatham Counties, Ga., and in southern Beaufort County, S.C., to more than 5 Mgal/d in northern Jasper and northern Beaufort Counties, S.C. Because of the limited water-supply potential, hypothetical alternatives involving redistributions, redistributions and small increases, and decreases in pumpage were simulated to determine the effects on water levels. These simulations indicate that reductions and redistributions of pumping would not adversely affect water levels at locations of encroachment and intrusion. Temperature, specific conductance, pH, and discharge data from 1989-91 for water from selected wells in all aquifers are also presented.

Data presented in this report were compiled from previously published reports (Goode, 1958; Sumsion, 1975; Avery, 1986; Kimball, 1987; Howells, 1990); data bases of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Navajo Tribe, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Utah Division of Water Rights, and the Utah Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining; and from information obtained from oil companies in the Greater Aneth Oil Field.

Results of investigations by Avery (1986) during 1982-83 indicated that water from many wells in the Navajo aquifer in the vicinity of the Greater Aneth Oil Field was moderately saline and that in some wells, salinity appeared to increase over time. The purpose of this study is to assess the physical extent and concentration of saline water in the Navajo and other aquifers in this area. Information on low-flow magnitude and frequency is essential in hydrologic studies and for optimum development of surface water resources. The report includes analyses of low-flow data and tabulations of computed low-flow magnitude and frequency for 7, 14, 30, 60, and 90 consecutive days with recurrence intervals of 2 and 10 years for continuous-record gaging stations. The report is the result of an investigation made as part of the Central Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (CMRASA). The CMRASA is one of several major investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey of regional aquifer systems in the United States. These regional investigations are designed to increase knowledge of the flow regime and hydrologic properties of major aquifer systems and to provide quantitative information for the assessment, development, and management of water supplies. The CMRASA study area includes all or parts of 10 Central Midwestern States (Jorgensen and Signor, 1981), as shown on the envelope cover.

This Hydrologic Investigations Atlas, which consists of a series of nine chapters, presents a description of the physical framework and the geohydrology of principal aquifer and confining systems in Kansas. Chapter B describes the physical framework of the Great Plains aquifer system and presents maps and a geohydrologic cross section that show the thickness, the areal extent, and the altitude and configuration of the top of the Lower Cretaceous rocks that compose the Great Plains aquifer system. The maps are based on data from selected geophysical and lithologic logs and from published maps of stratigraphically equivalent units. Maps that show the thickness and the altitude and configuration of the top of the Great Plains aquifer system have been prepared as part of a series of interrelated maps that describe the stratigraphic interval from the Precambrian surface through Lower Cretaceous rocks. A concerted effort was made to ensure that maps of each geohydrologic system are consistent with maps of underlying and overlying systems; modifications were made where necessary.

Chapter A of this atlas series (Wolf and others, 1990) describes the relation of geohydrologic systems in Kansas and presents a more detailed discussion of the methods and data used to prepare and ensure consistency among the sets of maps in the series.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ha722B","usgsCitation":"Spinazola, J.M., Wolf, R.J., and McGovern, H.E., 1992, Geohydrologic systems in Kansas — Physical framework of the Great Plains aquifer system: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 722, 2 Plates: 53.86 x 39.87 inches and 51.13 x 34.54 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ha722B.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 53.86 x 39.87 inches and 51.13 x 34.54 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":266304,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/722b/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":186136,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":360661,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/722b/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":394772,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_16146.htm"}],"scale":"1000000","country":"United States","state":"Kansas","otherGeospatial":"Great Plains aquifer system","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -102.04,37 ], [ -102.04,40 ], [ -97,40 ], [ -97,37 ], [ -102.04,37 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8e04","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spinazola, Joseph M.","contributorId":102044,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spinazola","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":277438,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wolf, R. Thousands of small to large lakes similar to the one shown in figure 1 dot the landscape, which is drained by numerous rivers and streams tributary primarily to the Mississippi River in the west and to the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River system in the east. These abundant surface-water sources represent an ample supply of water to large users, such as the cities of Milwaukee, Wis., and Detroit, Mich. However, water stored in unconsolidated and consolidated sedimentary-rock aquifers that underlie the four States also is in abundant supply and is an economical source that can be used for nearly any purpose, usually with little or no treatment. In more than 95 percent of the four-State area, these aquifers supply water to a broad spectrum of consumers-from individual households to cities, such as St. Paul, Minn., Madison, Wis., and Lansing, Mich. These aquifers are the subject of this chapter. The geology and the hydrology of each of the principal aquifers are illustrated and discussed insofar as information was available from the literature. Hydrogeology, ground-water flow, availability and quality of water, and freshwater withdrawals from each of the aquifers are the principal subjects of discussion.

Population in the four States is concentrated in the cities and is thinly dispersed in the broad agricultural areas of the States (fig. 2). Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., Des Moines, Iowa, Milwaukee and Madison, Wis., and Detroit and Lansing, Mich., are a few of the principal cities. Many of these cities and other large population centers represent areas of concentrated ground-water withdrawals.

Precipitation is the source of all water in Segment 9. Average annual precipitation ranges from about 20 to 40 inches across the segment and generally increases from northwest to southeast (fig. 3). Precipitation is least in the northwestern part of the segment because of the orographic effect of the Rocky Mountains, which are hundreds of miles to the west. Annual precipitation in excess of 36 inches that falls south and east of Lakes Superior and Michigan (fig. 3) is a result of the prevailing westerly winds that evaporate moisture from the lakes; this moisture subsequently condenses and falls as precipitation over the land.

Average annual runoff in rivers and streams (fig. 4) generally reflects average annual precipitation patterns (fig. 3). Runoff generally increases from less than 1 to more than 20 inches. Runoff also tends to be substantial downwind from Lakes Superior and Michigan. However, in no part of the segment does runoff exceed precipitation. Much of the water from precipitation is returned to the atmosphere by evapotranspiration-evaporation from the land and water surfaces, and transpiration by plants. Some of the water is stored in aquifers through ground-water recharge or is stored on the land surface in lakes, marshes, and reservoirs. Runoff represents water from precipitation that runs directly off the land surface to streams and water discharged to streams that was stored in lakes, marshes, reservoirs, or aquifers.
","largerWorkTitle":"Ground Water Atlas of the United States","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ha730J","isbn":"0607767588","usgsCitation":"Olcott, P.G., 1992, Ground Water Atlas of the United States: Segment 9, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 730, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ha730J.","productDescription":"31 p.","startPage":"J1","endPage":"J31","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":11487,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/ha730/ch_j/index.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":115252,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/730j/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"69.43 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":186516,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/730j/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"MultiPolygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[[-90.640927,42.508302],[-90.161159,42.106372],[-90.172765,41.866149],[-90.364128,41.579633],[-91.050328,41.400049],[-91.113648,41.241401],[-90.955201,40.986805],[-91.448441,40.378914],[-91.785916,40.611488],[-95.746443,40.584935],[-95.852615,40.702262],[-95.929889,41.415155],[-96.096186,41.547192],[-96.077543,41.777824],[-96.628741,42.757532],[-96.448134,43.104452],[-96.598396,43.495074],[-96.453049,43.500415],[-96.452948,45.268925],[-96.835451,45.586129],[-96.587093,45.816445],[-96.559271,46.058272],[-96.789572,46.639079],[-96.851293,47.589264],[-97.139497,48.153108],[-97.108655,48.691484],[-97.238387,48.982631],[-95.153711,48.998903],[-95.153314,49.384358],[-94.974286,49.367738],[-94.555835,48.716207],[-93.741843,48.517347],[-92.984963,48.623731],[-92.634931,48.542873],[-92.698824,48.494892],[-92.341207,48.23248],[-92.066269,48.359602],[-91.542512,48.053268],[-90.88548,48.245784],[-90.703702,48.096009],[-89.489226,48.014528],[-90.86827,47.5569],[-92.058888,46.809938],[-91.942988,46.679939],[-90.880358,46.957661],[-90.78804,46.844886],[-90.920813,46.637432],[-90.398478,46.575832],[-88.982483,46.99883],[-88.400224,47.379551],[-87.816958,47.471998],[-87.730804,47.449112],[-88.349952,47.076377],[-88.462349,46.786711],[-88.167373,46.9588],[-87.915943,46.909508],[-87.619747,46.79821],[-87.366767,46.507303],[-86.850111,46.434114],[-86.188024,46.654008],[-84.964652,46.772845],[-84.969464,46.47629],[-84.177428,46.52692],[-84.097766,46.256512],[-84.247687,46.17989],[-83.931175,46.017871],[-83.63498,46.103953],[-83.49484,45.999541],[-84.345451,45.946569],[-84.656567,46.052654],[-84.820557,45.868293],[-85.047028,46.020603],[-85.528403,46.087121],[-85.663966,45.967013],[-86.278007,45.942057],[-86.687208,45.634253],[-86.532989,45.882665],[-86.92106,45.697868],[-87.018902,45.838886],[-88.027103,44.578992],[-87.943801,44.529693],[-87.428144,44.890738],[-87.021088,45.296541],[-87.73063,43.893862],[-87.910172,43.236634],[-87.800477,42.49192],[-90.640927,42.508302]]],[[[-88.684434,48.115785],[-88.447236,48.182916],[-89.022736,47.858532],[-89.255202,47.876102],[-88.684434,48.115785]]],[[[-83.880387,41.720089],[-86.824828,41.76024],[-86.24971,42.480212],[-86.226305,42.988284],[-86.540916,43.633158],[-86.25395,44.64808],[-86.066745,44.905685],[-85.780439,44.977932],[-85.540497,45.210169],[-85.641652,44.810816],[-85.520205,44.960347],[-85.477423,44.813781],[-85.355478,45.282774],[-84.91585,45.393115],[-85.110884,45.526285],[-84.94565,45.708621],[-85.011433,45.757962],[-84.204218,45.627116],[-84.095905,45.497298],[-83.488826,45.355872],[-83.316118,45.141958],[-83.435822,45.000012],[-83.277213,44.7167],[-83.335248,44.357995],[-83.890145,43.934672],[-83.909479,43.672622],[-83.618602,43.628891],[-83.227093,43.981003],[-82.915976,44.070503],[-82.617955,43.768596],[-82.423086,42.988728],[-82.509935,42.637294],[-82.648776,42.550401],[-82.630922,42.64211],[-82.780817,42.652232],[-83.431103,41.757457],[-83.880387,41.720089]]],[[[-86.880572,45.331467],[-86.956192,45.351179],[-86.82177,45.427602],[-86.880572,45.331467]]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Iowa\",\"nation\":\"USA \"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66dd8c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Olcott, Perry G.","contributorId":17249,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Olcott","given":"Perry","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":277660,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Hydrologic investigations in Iowa are made through three basic types of projects: (1) hydrologic data-collection programs; (2) local or areal studies; and (3) statewide or regional investigations. These projects are funded through cooperative joint-funding agreements with Federal, State, and local agencies and direct Federal funds. The data and the results of the interpretive studies are published or released by either the U.S. Geological Survey or by cooperating agencies. This report describes: (1) the hydrologic data-collection programs; (2) the local or areal hydrologic investigations; and (3) statewide or regional studies conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in The CMRASA is one of several major investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey of regional aquifer systems in the United States. These regional investigations are designed to increase knowledge of the flow regime and hydrologic properties of major aquifer systems and to provide quantitative information for assessing, developing, and managing water supplies. The CMRASA study area includes all or parts of 10 Central Midwestern States (Jorgensen and Signor, 1981) as shown on the envelope
