This degradation did not occur with other avian tissues (muscle and liver). For this reason, a combined extraction-cleanup column chromatographic procedure, without added heat, was developed for the determination of dicofol in avian eggs. Homogenized subsamples of eggs were mixed with sodium sulfate, and the mixture was added as the top layer on a column prepacked with Florisil. The dicofol and other compounds of interest were then eluted with ethyl etherhexane. The extracts, relatively free from lipids, were quantitated on a gas chromatograph equipped with a 63Ni electron-capture detector and a methyl silicone capillary column. Recoveries from chicken eggs, fortified with dicofol and other DDT-related compounds, averaged 96%. Analysis of eggs of eastern screech-owls, fed a meat diet containing 10 ppm technical Kelthane, showed that both dicofol and DCBP were present. Results were confirmed by gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry. This method is rapid and reliable, involves a minimum of sample handling, and is well suited for high volume determination of dicofol in eggs and other avian tissues.
","language":"English","publisher":"Association of Official Analytical Chemists","doi":"10.1093/jaoac/71.3.539","usgsCitation":"Krynitsky, A.J., Stafford, C.J., and Wiemeyer, S.N., 1988, Combined extraction-cleanup column chromatographic procedure for determination of dicofol in avian eggs: Journal of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, v. 71, no. 3, p. 539-542, https://doi.org/10.1093/jaoac/71.3.539.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"539","endPage":"542","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":195843,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"71","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2020-01-14","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae745","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krynitsky, A. Cause of death is diagnosed by demonstration of depressed brain cholinesterase (ChE) activity in combination with chemical detection of anticholinesterase residue in the affected specimen. ChE depression is determined by comparison of the affected specimen to normal ChE activity for a sample of control specimens of the same species, but timely procurement of controls is not always possible. Therefore, a reference file of normal whole brain ChE activity is provided for 48 species of wild birds from North America representing 11 orders and 23 families for use as emergency substitutes in diagnosis of anticholinesterase poisoning. The ChE values, based on 83 sets of wild control specimens from across the United States, are reproducible provided the described procedures are duplicated. Overall, whole brain ChE activity varied nearly three-fold among the 48 species represented, but it was usually similar for closely related species. However, some species were statistically separable in most families and some species of the same genus differed as much as 50%.","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Association","doi":"10.7589/0090-3558-24.1.51","usgsCitation":"Hill, E.F., 1988, Brain cholinesterase activity of apparently normal wild birds: Journal of Wildlife Diseases, v. 24, no. 1, p. 51-61, https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-24.1.51.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"51","endPage":"61","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194072,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"24","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fcd3d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hill, E. Data were collected weekly on numbers of adults, nests, eggs, and young in relation to the frequency and intensity of dive attacks on a human intruder by nesting terns. I explored the relationships between attack behavior and colony size/density, seasonality, and brood survival. The results provide little support for social facilitation since neither colony size (range 30-250 nests) nor density was related to mean attack frequency; however, in larger colonies, fewer birds participated in dive attacks. Although the intensity of attacks was strongly seasonal, patterns were very different among colonies and peak attack rates did not always coincide with peak hatching periods. Defense levels declined late in the season in most colonies regardless of whether brood survival was high or low. Colonies with individuals that attacked early in the season had higher overall nesting success than in colonies where individuals showed little early season aggression.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Field Ornithology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Erwin, R., 1988, Correlates of nest-defense behavior of common terns: Journal of Field Ornithology, v. 59, no. 2, p. 135-142.","productDescription":"135-142","startPage":"135","endPage":"142","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":17837,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/JFO/v059n02/p0135-p0142.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":196915,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"59","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db6869b1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Erwin, R.M.","contributorId":57396,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erwin","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332454,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

There have been striking changes in the species composition and structure of the community of vascular plants, as well as population reductions of lichens, mosses, arthropods inhabiting the letter, and amphibians. Reductions in the populations of decomposers of organic matter have led to an accumulation of litter on the forest floor. Zinc poisoning was diagnosed in a white-tailed deer, and lead poisoning was diagnosed in a shrew. White-tailed deer also contained high concentrations of cadmium.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Trace Substances in Environmental Health","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Beyer, W., 1988, Damage to the forest ecosystem on Blue Mountain from zinc smelting: Trace Substances in Environmental Health, v. 22, p. 249-262.","productDescription":"249-262","startPage":"249","endPage":"262","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194242,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"22","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e8c0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Beyer, W. In addition, fidelity to wintering areas was compared between sexes and between coastal and inland wintering sites. We did not find evidence of age- or sex-specific differences in distribution patterns (P > 0.10). Black ducks exhibited a stronger fidelity to coastal wintering areas (P < 0.01), but there were no sex-specific differences (P > 0.30). We believe that the early formation of breeding pairs and possibly predictable food resources may reduce age – sex segregation in distribution patterns during winter. The predictability of food resources in coastal, as opposed to inland, wintering areas is likely responsible for the greater fidelity of black ducks to coastal wintering sites.
","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Publishing","doi":"10.1139/z88-221","usgsCitation":"Diefenbach, D.R., Nichols, J.D., and Hines, J.E., 1988, Distribution patterns The relationship between estimated fat content at capture and length of stay (days between marking and last observation) of Semipalmated Sandpipers at one of these staging areas in eastern Maine was studied during 1980-1982. Total body mass and wing chord length were used to estimate fat content. When data were analyzed by week of initial capture, mean length of stay of both adults and juveniles decreased with increasing fat content. This supports the assumption that resumption of migration is affected by fat content at staging areas for long-distance nonstop flights. However, fat content at capture was a poor predictor of length of stay, which suggests that other factors are more important in determining length of stay.","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.2307/1368839","usgsCitation":"Dunn, P., May, T., McCollough, M., and Howe, M., 1988, Length of stay and fat content of migrant semipalmated sandpipers in eastern Maine: Condor, v. 90, no. 4, p. 824-835, https://doi.org/10.2307/1368839.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"824","endPage":"835","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193558,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"90","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a6060","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dunn, P.O.","contributorId":21650,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunn","given":"P.O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331185,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"May, T.A.","contributorId":32258,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"May","given":"T.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331186,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McCollough, M.A.","contributorId":84023,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCollough","given":"M.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331188,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Howe, M.A.","contributorId":70462,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howe","given":"M.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331187,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The Waterfowl Hunter Questionnaire Survey separately estimates the harvest of ducks and geese using cluster samples of hunters who buy duck stamps at sample post offices. The Waterfowl Parts Collection estimates species, age, and sex ratios from parts solicited from successful hunters who responded to the Waterfowl Hunter Questionnaire Survey in previous years. These ratios are used to partition the duck and goose harvest into species, age, and sex specific harvest estimates. Annual estimates are correlated because successful hunters who respond to the Questionnaire Survey in one year may be asked to contribute to the Parts Collection for the next three years. Bootstrap variance estimates are used because covariances among years are difficult to estimate.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"American Statistical Association, Proceedings of the Section on Survey Research Methods","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Geissler, P., 1988, Variance estimation for the Federal Waterfowl Harvest Surveys: American Statistical Association, Proceedings of the Section on Survey Research Methods, v. 1988, p. 698-703.","productDescription":"698-703","startPage":"698","endPage":"703","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194283,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1988","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602b99","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Geissler, P.H.","contributorId":24038,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Geissler","given":"P.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335970,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Offspring mortality occurred at only one deserted nest, however. Parents that were deserted by their mates continued to care for their young until independence (3?5 additional weeks) and provided snails at a rate similar to that of both parents combined before desertion. Males and females deserted with nearly equal frequency, except in 1982 when more females deserted. No desertion occurred during drought years, whereas desertion occurred at nearly every nest during favourable conditions. The occurrence of mate desertion was generally related to indirect measures of snail abundance: foraging range, snail delivery rates to the young and growth rates. Small broods were deserted more frequently by females than by males and tended to be deserted earlier than large ones. After desertion, deserters had the opportunity to re-mate and nest again since breeding seasons were commonly lengthy, but whether they did so was impossible to determine conclusively in most cases. The deserted bird sometimes incurred increased energetic costs and lost breeding opportunities during periods of monoparental care.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Animal Behaviour","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","doi":"10.1016/S0003-3472(87)80273-7","usgsCitation":"Beissinger, S., and Snyder, N., 1988, Mate desertion in the snail kite: Animal Behaviour, v. 35, no. 2, p. 477-487, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0003-3472(87)80273-7.","productDescription":"477-487","startPage":"477","endPage":"487","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":195815,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":17013,"rank":200,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0003-3472(87)80273-7","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"volume":"35","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db605b4e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Beissinger, S. Adult birds from that area were emaciated, had subacute to extensive chronic hepatic lesions, and had excess fluid and fibrin in the peritoneal cavity. Biochemical changes in their livers included elevated glycogen and non-protein-bound sulfhydryl concentrations and glutathione peroxidase activity but lowered protein, total sulfhydryl, and protein-bound sulfhydryl concentrations. Congenital malformations observed grossly in embryos were often multiple and included anophthalmia, microphthalmia, abnormal beaks, amelia, micromelia, ectrodactyly, and hydrocephaly. Mean concentrations of selenium in livers (94.4 ppm, dry weight) and kidneys (96.6 ppm) of birds collected at the Kesterson ponds were about 10 times those found at a nearby control area (8.3 and 12.2 ppm). We conclude that selenium present in the agricultural drainage water supplied to the Kesterson ponds accumulated in the food chain of aquatic birds to toxic concentrations and caused the lesion and other changes observed.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/15287398809531141","usgsCitation":"Ohlendorf, H.M., Kilness, A.W., Simmons, J.L., Stroud, R.K., Hoffman, D.J., and Moore, J.F., 1988, Selenium toxicosis in wild aquatic birds: Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, v. 24, no. 1, p. 67-92, https://doi.org/10.1080/15287398809531141.","productDescription":"26 p.","startPage":"67","endPage":"92","numberOfPages":"26","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197770,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Merced County","otherGeospatial":"Kesterton National Wildlife Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"id\":\"208\",\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Merced\",\"state\":\"CA\"},\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-120.0538,37.1824],[-120.063,37.1787],[-120.078,37.1778],[-120.0947,37.1718],[-120.1062,37.1681],[-120.1224,37.1671],[-120.1397,37.1647],[-120.1466,37.1652],[-120.1536,37.1679],[-120.1645,37.1651],[-120.1726,37.1664],[-120.1807,37.1627],[-120.1905,37.1618],[-120.2021,37.1649],[-120.2304,37.1638],[-120.2396,37.1592],[-120.277,37.154],[-120.288,37.153],[-120.2961,37.1502],[-120.3041,37.1443],[-120.3173,37.1392],[-120.3277,37.1364],[-120.3317,37.1328],[-120.3362,37.1277],[-120.3414,37.1268],[-120.3593,37.1221],[-120.3679,37.1207],[-120.3801,37.1252],[-120.4008,37.1196],[-120.4071,37.1136],[-120.4404,37.1048],[-120.4605,37.0987],[-120.4726,37.095],[-120.4801,37.0954],[-120.5417,37.0459],[-120.8962,36.7594],[-120.9103,36.7483],[-120.9183,36.7414],[-120.9334,36.7521],[-121.0597,36.8032],[-121.1159,36.826],[-121.138,36.8361],[-121.1439,36.842],[-121.1453,36.8528],[-121.1524,36.8632],[-121.1617,36.8694],[-121.1653,36.8766],[-121.1695,36.8838],[-121.1789,36.8914],[-121.1819,36.8986],[-121.1839,36.9099],[-121.188,36.913],[-121.1927,36.9143],[-121.2001,36.9142],[-121.2151,36.9144],[-121.2232,36.9152],[-121.2291,36.9206],[-121.2333,36.9287],[-121.2329,36.9364],[-121.2234,36.947],[-121.2143,36.9539],[-121.2127,36.958],[-121.2116,36.9607],[-121.2314,36.97],[-121.2424,36.9748],[-121.2473,36.9838],[-121.2468,36.9902],[-121.2446,36.9947],[-121.2327,37.0008],[-121.2368,37.0071],[-121.237,37.0152],[-121.2447,37.0237],[-121.2478,37.0314],[-121.2341,37.0366],[-121.2232,37.0399],[-121.2247,37.0535],[-121.2098,37.0582],[-121.2088,37.0655],[-121.2176,37.0717],[-121.2246,37.0771],[-121.2311,37.0833],[-121.241,37.0864],[-121.2439,37.0891],[-121.2377,37.0937],[-121.2314,37.0969],[-121.231,37.1015],[-121.2265,37.1065],[-121.2248,37.112],[-121.2192,37.1171],[-121.2188,37.1243],[-121.2223,37.1283],[-121.2266,37.1369],[-121.1631,37.1886],[-121.1267,37.2167],[-121.0795,37.2523],[-120.9662,37.3434],[-120.9762,37.3492],[-120.9811,37.3641],[-120.9754,37.3669],[-120.9749,37.3714],[-120.9726,37.3747],[-120.9744,37.3773],[-120.9836,37.3754],[-120.982,37.3804],[-120.9832,37.384],[-120.9844,37.3854],[-120.9925,37.3857],[-120.9858,37.399],[-120.5964,37.5518],[-120.3873,37.6347],[-120.3157,37.5173],[-120.3102,37.4947],[-120.2991,37.4852],[-120.2778,37.4527],[-120.2748,37.4378],[-120.2828,37.43],[-120.2804,37.4201],[-120.2716,37.412],[-120.2575,37.3903],[-120.2041,37.3213],[-120.2018,37.3145],[-120.1988,37.3086],[-120.1907,37.3032],[-120.1865,37.2982],[-120.1807,37.2919],[-120.1847,37.286],[-120.1858,37.2806],[-120.1775,37.2611],[-120.163,37.2499],[-120.149,37.2413],[-120.1339,37.2346],[-120.116,37.2293],[-120.094,37.2212],[-120.0858,37.2181],[-120.0794,37.2131],[-120.0765,37.2095],[-120.0695,37.2032],[-120.0626,37.1955],[-120.0579,37.1869],[-120.0538,37.1824]]]}}]}","volume":"24","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fbe4b07f02db5f4a39","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ohlendorf, H. Selenium at 10 ppm as selenomethionine or 25 ppm as sodium selenite caused a 40-44% decrease in the total number of eggs that hatched compared to controls. Selenium at 25 ppm (sodium selenite) resulted in a 19% decrease in mean embryonic weight at 18 d of incubation, accompanied by a 6% decrease in crown-rump length. Ten parts per million Se as selenomethionine was more teratogenic than sodium selenite at 25 ppm. Selenomethionine (10 ppm Se) resulted in an incidence of 13.1% malformations that were often multiple, whereas sodium selenite (10 and 25 ppm Se) resulted in 3.6 and 4.2% malformations. The teratogenicity of selenomethionine was confirmed in a second experiment in which mallards received 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 ppm Se as selenomethionine, resulting in 0.9, 0.5, 1.4, 6.8, and 67.9% malformations, respectively. Both forms of selenium increased the incidence of edema and stunted embryonic growth. Selenomethionine (10 ppm Se) resulted in a significant increase of approximately 40% in plasma glutathione peroxidase activity and a 70% increase in sorbitol dehydrogenase activity (indicative of hepatotoxicity) in hatchlings. Sodium selenite (25 ppm Se) resulted in fourfold elevation in plasma uric acid concentration, indicative of renal alteration. Selenomethionine accumulated much better in eggs than did sodium selenite. These findings indicate that selenomethionine is considerably more teratogenic and generally more embryotoxic than sodium selenite, probably due to higher uptake of selenomethionine.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor and Francis","doi":"10.1080/15287398809531178","usgsCitation":"Hoffman, D.J., and Heinz, G.H., 1988, Embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of selenium in the diet of mallards: Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, v. 24, no. 4, p. 477-490, https://doi.org/10.1080/15287398809531178.","productDescription":"477-490","startPage":"477","endPage":"490","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193444,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":269450,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1080/15287398809531178"}],"volume":"24","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e479fe4b07f02db492f66","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoffman, D.
