Area 62 is located at the southern end of the Rocky Mountain Coal Province in parts of New Mexico and Arizona and includes approximately 9,500 square miles. Surface mining alters, at least temporarily, the environment; if the areas are unreclaimed, there can be long-term environmental consequences.\r\n\r\nThe land-ownership pattern in Area 62 is complicated. The checkerboard pattern created by several types of ownership makes effective management of these lands difficult.\r\n\r\nThe climate generally is semiarid with average annual precipitation ranging from 10 to 20 inches. Pinons, junipers, and grasslands cover most of the area, and much of it is used for grazing by livestock. Soils vary with landscape, differing from flood plains and hillslopes to mountain slopes.\r\n\r\nThe major structural features of this area were largely developed during middle Tertiary time. The main structural features are the southern San Juan Basin and the Mogollon slope. Coal-bearing rocks are present in four Cretaceous rock units of the Mesaverde Group: the Gallup Sandstone, the Dileo Coal Member, and the Gibson Coal Member of the Crevasse Canyon Formation, and the Cleary Coal Member of the Menefee Formation.\r\n\r\nArea 62 is drained by Black Creek, the Puerco River, the Zuni River, Carrizo Wash-Largo Creek, and the Rio San Jose. Only at the headwaters of the Zuni River is the flow perennial. The streamflow-gaging station network consists of 25 stations operated for a variety of needs. Streamflow changes throughout the year with variation related directly to rainfall and snowmelt. Base flow in Area 62 is zero indicating no significant ground-water discharge. Mountainous areas contribute the highest mean annual runoff of 1.0 inch. Very few water-quality data are available for the surface-water stations. Of the nine surface-water stations that have water-quality data, only one has chemical analyses from more than 10 samples. Therefore, sufficient data to characterize the area in detail are not available. Suspended sediment data are available only for a few surface-\r\nwater stations in the area. Erosion rates generally are less than 1 acre-foot per square mile per year. Greater erosion rates are found within the badland areas.\r\n\r\nWater levels are periodically measured at 21 selected wells in Area 62. These observation wells are located mostly along the Rio San Jose and northeast of Gallup, New Mexico. The recharge to ground-water aquifers generally coincide with areas of greater precipitation in the mountainous areas. Depth to water below land surface is generally less than 200 feet. Well yields of 100 gallons per minute are common in most of the area.\r\n\r\nGround-water quality is variable both within each aquifer and between aquifers. These determinations show that during June to October water in ponds deeper than ~10 ft was stratified; ponds which had little or not change of temperature with depth generally were shallow or were sampled in early November. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH usually decreased with depth, whereas specific conductance usually increased with depth. Concentrations of dissolved sulfate, chloride, iron, and manganese varied from site to site. Specific conductance, which is a measure of dissolved solids in the water, ranged from 93 to 4,800 mmho/cm at 25oC. Some physical and chemical characteristics of the mine-pond water are related to the coal bed adjacent to the pond. Mean specific-conductance values and dissolved-sulfate concentrations were greatest in ponds associated with mining of Dawson, Weir-Pittsburg, and Secor coals. Mean dissolved-iron concentrations were greatest in ponds associated with mining of the Dawson, Secor, and Hartshorne coals. Mean dissolved-manganese concentrations were greatest in ponds associated with mining of the Dawson, Weir-Pittsburg, and Secor coals, but greatly exceeded secondary drinking-water limits regardless of Fresh to slightly saline water is available in most parts of Rusk County, which is located in the Piney Woods region of northeast Texas. The Wilcox aquifer, which underlies the entire county, was the source of most of the ground water withdrawn during 1980. Other units capable of yielding fresh ground water are the Carrizo, Queen City, and Sparta aquifers and the Reklaw Formation.

\n

About 5.4 million gallons per day (20,440 cubic meters per day) of ground water was used for all purposes during 1980. Of this amount, about 78 percent was used for public supply, 10 percent for mining, 8 percent for industrial purposes, and 4 percent for rural domestic use. Water levels have declined extensively at the city of Henderson, which used about 38 percent of all ground water consumed in Rusk County.

\n

Generally, the ground water is of acceptable quality. Water in some of the near-surface beds and some of the deeper sands in the Wilcox aquifer may have become mineralized because of oilfield operations. Ground-water contamination by oilfield brines at Henderson Oil Field has been documented. Two separate instances of streamflow contamination at Striker Creek and Henderson Oil Field have been documented.

\n

Moderate amounts of ground water are available for development. The amount that is available perennially is not known, but it is greater than that being withdrawn. Assuming a hydraulic gradient of about 8 feet per mile (1.5 meters per kilometer), at least 12 million gallons per day (45,420 cubic meters per day) of fresh ground water is being transmitted through the Wilcox and about 3 million gallons per day (11,350 cubic meters per day) through the Carrizo. About 20 million acre-feet (24,660 cubic hectometers) of freshwater is available from storage in the Wilcox and about 4 million acre-feet (4,930 cubic hectometers) from storage in the Carrizo. Additional amounts of slightly saline water are available from the major aquifers. Smaller but undetermined amounts of fresh ground water are available from the Sparta and Queen City aquifers and from the Reklaw Formation. Properly constructed wells in the Wilcox and Carrizo aquifers can be expected to yield more than 500 gallons per minute (32 liters per second) if the wells are properly spaced. Development of additional resources around the city of Henderson and the Mount Enterprise Fault System should be considered cautiously because of the probability of saltwater encroachment. Ground water in other parts of the county is practically undeveloped.

\n

Some mineralization of ground water is due to natural causes. Other mineralization of ground water is due to contamination. A program needs to be initiated to determine the extent and cause of mineralization that has taken place in freshwater sands. Water-quality data is needed at Henderson in order to monitor saltwater encroachment.

The Zarghat quadrangle is located in the northern Precambrian shield of Saudi Arabia between lat 26°30' and 27°00' N. and long 41°00' and 41°30 ' E. The area is underlain by three Precambrian volcanosedimentary units and a range of Precambrian dioritoid and granitoid plutonic intrusive rocks. Paleozoic(?) sandstone crops out in small areas in the northwestern part of the quadrangle, and a lobe of QuaternaryC?) basalt from Harrat Ithnain penetrates the southwest corner of the quadrangle.

\n

The Banana greenstone, the oldest unit in the quadrangle, is composed of basic to intermediate volcanic and subvolcanic rocks and minor interbedded marble that have been metamorphosed to greenschist-facies assemblages. The volcanic rocks range from basalt to andesite and dacite, and the subvolcanic rocks are diabase and diorite.

\n

Two less-metamorphosed Precambrian units, the Hadn formation and the Zarghat formation, unconformably overlie the Banana greenstone. The Hadn formation is composed of predominantly rhyolitic to dacitic volcanic rock and minor amounts of continental sedimentary rock; it is exposed only in the east half of the quadrangle. The Zarghat formation is also rhyolitic to dacitic volcanic rock but contains much more sedimentary rock that appears to have been deposited in a shallow-marine environment. The relation between these two formations is not clear at this time.

\n

Two groups of intrusive rocks are recognized on the basis of their ages relative to the Hadn and Zarghat formations. An older group is composed of hornblende quartz diorite, granodiorite, tonalite, and lesser amounts of granite. Tnese rocks intrude the Banana greenstone but predate the Hadn and Zarghat formations. Post-Hadn/Zarghat intrusive rocks are voluminous undivided granite, several varieties of alkali-feldspar granite, monzogranite, granophyre, hypabyssal rhyolite, aplite, diabase, and gabbro.

\n

The structural grain within the quadrangle appears to trend north-south. The Precambrian volcanosedimentary rocks and older plutonic rocks define three major north-trending lithologic belts. The Zarghat formation makes up the westernmost belt, and the Hadn formation comprises the easternmost belt. The central belt consists of Banana greenstone and older plutonic rocks. The north-south structural grain is crosscut by large plutons that postdate the Hadn and Zarghat formations. The dominant faults in the area belong to a northeast-trending system of shears; less common fault orientations are northwesterly, northerly, and east-westerly.

\n

Outcrops of magnesite in the southwest corner of the quadrangle constitute the only known economic potential in the area.

Given are county names, drainage area (in square miles), period of record, type of site (continuous record, partial record, miscellaneous measurement), date of discharge, stage, elevation, discharge, and remarks. An envelope curve for the New York data was developed from a plot of maximum known discharge versus drainage area, and was compared with a like curve derived from maximum known discharge data gathered throughout the United States. The national curve ranges from about 3.0 times higher than the New York curve at a drainage area of 1.0 square mile to about 4.5 times higher at 1 ,000 square miles. The relative magnitude of flood discharges in four hydrologic regions of New York (west, north, southeast, Long Island) is shown in graphs relating maximum known discharge to drainage area.
