LEE (cruise L9-84-CP) left Majuro, Radak chain of the Marshall Islands on July 28, 1984, cruised over the Mid-Pacific Mountains, and reached Hawaii on August 15, 1984. The main objectives of the cruise were to study the distribution and composition of ferromanganese-oxide crusts in the Marshall Islands and to retrieve a current meter/sediment trap mooring deployed in October 1983 on Horizon Guyot, Mid-Pacific Mountains (USGS LS-83-HW cruise). The quality of the geophysical data collected is generally good. However, the declivity of some seamount, atoll, and guyot flanks are too large to allow high-quality resolution from the surface-towed systems that were used.</p><p>The navigation system used was an integrated satellite-navigation/LORAN-C (in Mid-Pacific Mountains)/dead-reckoning system that was updated by radar when possible. A total of 5410 km of 12-kHz and 3.5-kHz seismic-reflection data and 730 km of 80-in3 to 148-in3 airgun seismic-reflection data were collected. The original records can be seen and studied at the USGS offices at Woods Hole, MA 02543. The quadrangle consists of about 45 percent Precambrian bedrock, 50 percent Quaternary deposits, and 5 percent sedimentary cover rocks. The Precambrian rocks include volcaniclastic and volcanic rocks that are slightly metamorphosed and various granitic plutons. The volcaniclastic and volcanic rocks are correlated with the Hulayfah group and the Hadn formation. The older Hulayfah is principally basalt of probably submarine origin that has locally been metamorphosed to greenschist facies. The Hadn is composed of submarine and subaerial deposits. These consist of volcanic-derived sandstone and siltstone and lesser amounts of chiefly rhyolite volcanic rocks. In most areas, the Hadn shows little in the way of metamorphic effects, but locally it too has been metamorphosed to greenschist facies. The volcanic rocks of the Hadn include ash-flow tuffs; some appear to be water-laid, but others are subaerial. The oldest pluton is diorite, those of intermediate age are monzogranite and syenogranite, and the youngest are alkali feldspar granites. The largest pluton, a metaluminous, low-calcium, biotite monzogranite, occupies much of the southern part of the quadrangle. The alkali feldspar granites are mostly peralkaline; the two youngest are particularly so. The latter two are located in the southwest and southeast corners of the quadrangle, and both contain arfvedsonite and kataphorite. The pluton in the southeast grades outward from a peraluminous core to a peralkaline, comenditic peripheral zone and is inferred to be genetically related to a spectacular, west-trending comendite dike swarm in the southern half of the quadrangle.</p>\n<p>Two northeast-trending buried right-lateral faults are inferred in the quadrangle; one in the southeast and one in the northwest. The one in the northwest probably offsets the comendite dike swarm about 3 km. This fault appears to be part of a broad right-lateral fault and flexure zone that juxtaposes the Hadn formation on the west against the Hulayfah group on the east.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr84378","usgsCitation":"Ekren, E.B., 1984, Reconnaissance geology of the Jibal Matalli Quadrangle, sheet 27/40 D, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-378, ii, 38 p. . :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84378.","productDescription":"ii, 38 p. . :ill., maps ;28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":152954,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0378/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48176,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0378/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48177,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0378/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 40,\n 27\n ],\n [\n 40,\n 28\n ],\n [\n 41,\n 28\n ],\n [\n 41,\n 27\n ],\n [\n 40,\n 27\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db6409ad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ekren, E. Seismic lines were run from the mouth of the Missouri River up the Mississippi River to a point approximately seven miles upriver from Lock and Dam No. 26 at Alton, Illinois (fig. 2a,b). Additional lines were run upriver from Lock and Dam No. 25 between the dam and River Mile 244, but these data are not reported because of mechanical problems with the larger sound-source equipment and inexact navigational control. </p><p>The objective of the cooperative study was to utilize marine common-depth-point (CDP), digital, and multichannel techniques to locate a monoclinal flexure of the Cap au Gres Fault that earlier had been interpreted from land seismic data to be in the vicinity of Lock and Dam No 26 (Shannon and Wilson, 1980). A second objective was to demonstrate that the marine seismic system could be used for making relatively deep penetration seismic-reflection surveys on shallow (less than 10-m water depth) inland waterways that have organic sediment floors.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8482","usgsCitation":"Winget, E.A., and Tirey, G.B., 1984, U.S. Geological Survey common-depth-point seismic-reflection survey between Mississippi River miles 195 and 210 (R/V NEECHO cruise NE-80-3): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-82, 5 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8482.","productDescription":"5 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":391454,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13576.htm"},{"id":39583,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0082/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":145062,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0082/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Illinois, Missouri","otherGeospatial":"Mississippi River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -90.333,\n 38.9350\n ],\n [\n -90.333,\n 38.7960\n ],\n [\n -90.083,\n 38.7960\n ],\n [\n -90.083,\n 38.9350\n ],\n [\n -90.333,\n 38.9350\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2be4b07f02db612e27","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Winget, E. Of these, Yap Island has more than half the total land area, most of the population, and almost all of the economic development. The islands of Maap and Rumung together compose only 15 percent of the land area and population. Average annual rainfall over the Yap Islands amounts to 122 inches. Rainfall-runoff comparisons indicate that about half of the annual rainfall runs off to the ocean on Yap Island and Gagil-Tamil. Streams on Gagil-Tamil are perennial but streams on Yap Island are dry an average of 3 months per year due to geologic differences. \n\nAnalyses of water samples from 23 sources show the good quality and the chemical similarity of surface and ground water. These were the first deep wells in the area, and their installation provided an opportunity to conduct extensive aquifer tests under relatively undisturbed conditions. The deep irrigation wells are perforated in the Santa Fe Group of Miocene to Pleistocene Age. The Santa Fe Group is composed of interfingering and alternating beds of clay, silt, sand, and small gravel. In the area of these wells, the upper part of the saturated zone contains slightly saline water to a depth of about 100 to 175 feet below the water table, underlain by a freshwater zone extending to depths greater than 1,200 feet. As water is pumped from the freshwater zone, leakage occurs from above and below the perforated interval. At one of the irrigation district wells, slightly saline water moved downward because of a lack of confining layers in the aquifer. At three other wells, the surface casing was not set deep enough and slightly saline water moved into the top of the perforations , downward in the casing, and into the freshwater part of the aquifer. The well is one of a series of test wells drilled in the southwestern part of the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. These test wells are part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations to identify sites for storage of high-level radioactive wastes. Test well USW H-4 was drilled in ash-flow tuff to a total depth of 1,219 meters. Depth to water below land surface was 519 meters or at an altitude of 730 meters above sea level. After test pumping at a rate of 17.4 liters per second for approximately 9 days, the drawdown was 4.85 meters. A radioactive borehole-flow survey indicated that the Bullfrog Member was the most productive geologic unit, producing 36.5 percent of the water in the well. The second most productive geologic unit was the Tram Member, which produced 32 percent of the water. The water in test well USW H-4 is predominantly a soft, sodium bicarbonate type of water typical of water produced in tuffaceous rocks in southern Nevada. They were deposited on a highly irregular surface developed on a variety of basement rocks that include granitic rocks of Cretaceous age, quartz latite and rhyodacite tuffs and lava flows of Eocene age, andesitic and basaltic lava flows of Oligocene age, and latitic and basaltic lava flows of early Miocene age. \r\n\r\nThe rhyolitic rocks are principally welded tuffs that, regardless of their source, have one feature in common-namely internal characteristics indicating en-masse, viscous lavalike flowage. The flowage features commonly include considerable thicknesses of flow breccia at the bases of various cooling units. On the basis of the tabular nature of the rhyolitic deposits, their broad areal extents, and the local preservation of pyroclastic textures at the bases, tops, and distal ends of some of the deposits, we have concluded that the rocks were emplaced as ash flows at extremely high temperatures and that they coalesced to liquids before final emplacement and cooling. Temperatures of l090?C and higher are indicated by iron-titanium oxide compositions. \r\n\r\nRhyolites that are about 16 m.y. old are preserved mostly in the downdropped eastern and western flanks of the Silver City Range and they are inferred to have been erupted from the Silver City Range. They rarely contain more than about 2 percent phenocrysts that consist of quartz and subequal amounts of plagioclase and alkali feldspar; commonly, they contain biotite, and they are the only rhyolitic rocks in the area to do so. The several rhyolitic units that are 14 m.y. to about 10 m.y. old contain only pyroxene-principally ferriferous and intermediate pigeonites-as mafic constituents. The rhyolites of the Silver City Range comprise many cooling units, none of which can be traced for great distances. \r\n\r\nRocks erupted from the Owyhee Plateau include two sequences that were traced over areas having diameters of about 100 km. These two sheets are the herein-named Swisher Mountain Tuff, which is about 13.8 m.y. old, and the Little Jacks Tuff, which is about 10 m.y. old. The Swisher Mountain Tuff was erupted from the Juniper Mountain volcanic center, a gentle dome that is not bounded by arcuate faults indicative of cauldron subsidence. The tuff is 200 m thick over a considerable area in and adjacent to its source. It apparently thins gradually toward its distal edges, and it is inferred to be uniformly distributed around its source at Juniper Mountain. The unit contains vitrophyres at various intervals from base to top, and, although the vitrophyres are, in general, flow layered and commonly flow brecciated, they occasionally contain well-defined pumice clasts. The vitrophyres indicate compound cooling, and, near the distal edges of the sheet, some of them probably represent complete cooling breaks. \r\n\r\nThe Little Jacks Tuff onlaps the Swisher Mountain Tuff in expo sures east of Juniper Mountain, and it is inferred to have been erupted from a source on the part of the Owyhee Plateau that lies just east of the area studied. This inferred source area, like that at Juniper Mountain, is also expressed today as a gentle dome without structural features indicative of cauldron subsidence. The Little Jacks Tuff, in most exposures in the deep canyons of the Plateau, consists of at least four cooling units, and, in places in the eastern part of the studied area near the source area, it possibly comprises as many as six. Although there is no obvious evidence of erosion between the various cooling units, magnetic polarity measurements indicate that there were at least two magnetic reversals during the eruption interval of the Little Jacks Tuff. Like the Swisher Mountain Tuff, the Little Jacks has flattened pumice clasts in a few outcrops-principally at the bases of the various cooling units. \r\n\r\nThe two tuff sequences are calc-a","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/pp1272","usgsCitation":"Ekren, E.B., McIntyre, D.H., and Bennett, E.H., 1984, High-temperature, large-volume, lavalike ash-flow tuffs without calderas in southwestern Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1272, 76 p.; 2 plates in pocket, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1272.","productDescription":"76 p.; 2 plates in pocket","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":126352,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1272/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":247321,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1272/plate-1.pdf","size":"4589","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":247322,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1272/plate-2.pdf","size":"4882","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32655,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1272/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a58e4b07f02db62efd5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ekren, E.
