Data were collected during five cruises at 2-month intervals from March through November. Benthic macrofauna for identification of species and sediment for size analysis were sampled at eight stations. Ancillary data, which consisted of salinity, temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentrations, and suspended sediment, were collected at 12 stations. Salinity and temperature were measured at three stations that coincided with continuous water quality monitors. Abundances and geographical distributions of a newly introduced species of clam were measured. The major issues related to this important resource in Minnesota are:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>Availability of ground water and effects of developing water supplies from wells in buried-drift Baseline information on Cottonwood Creek channel characteristics from 1982-83 field surveys and 1940-84 aerial photographs indicates an alluvial channel that consists of a braided inner main channel within a broader flood channel, with no clear topographic break between the main and flood channels. The braided channel is subject to large and rapid position shifts in the flood channel, which meanders within the valley fill; however, the position of the flood channel has remained relatively stable since 1940. Mean slope of Cottonwood Creek is 0.0017 and that of South Fork Cottonwood Creek is 0.0020. Fluctuations of mean bed elevation appear to be random with no apparent long-term trend of aggradation or degradation. Mean bed-material size ranged from 3 to 82 millimeters. Low-flow channel sinuosity ranged from 1.04 to 1.47 from 1940 to 1984. Cumulative lateral migration for Cottonwood Creek decreased upstream, while for South Fork, it remained relatively constant. Net lateral migration was toward the right bank on Cottonwood Creek whereas no trend in net lateral migration is apparent for the South Fork. The surficial aquifer system and its geologic matrix are divisible into three zones on the bases of relative permeabilities and lithologic characteristics. The two greatest water users in the county, public supply utilities and agricultural irrigators, increased total water withdrawals by 123 and 50%, respectively, during 1970-80. By 1980, 76% of public supply withdrawals were from zones I and II of the surficial aquifer system, whereas groundwater pumpage for irrigation decreased to 9% of the total irrigation water used. Increases in groundwater withdrawals for public supply were greatest in the southeast and central coastal parts of the county and served as an indicator for potential changes of flow directions and water quality in the surficial aquifer system. Residual seawater, emplaced in the aquifer system during the Pleistocene Epoch, is still prevalent in the central and western parts of Palm Beach County where low permeabilities in the geologic matrix have retarded its dilution.
