The geologic feature is commonly known in the literature as the Cap au Ores Fault or Cap au Ores Uplift. A second objective was to demonstrate that the marine seismic system could be used successfully for making relatively deep penetration seismic-reflection surveys on inland waterways with shallow water depths (less than 10 meters) and organic sediments on the waterway bottom.</p><p>The survey was made by agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), St. Louis District, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS used a specially equipped, trailerable, 38-ft aluminum boat for the work. The quality of the survey records can be classified as from fair to good. Seismic-reflection events could be interpreted in the upper 200 ms of data. Five reflecting horizons with little slope were recorded between Mississippi River Miles 195 and 210 without any evidence of faulting of the magnitude (50 to 100 m) suggested by the Shannon and Wilson report (1980). Minor faulting and buried channeling could be interpreted.</p><p>This survey demonstrated the value and economy of obtaining deeper penetration seismic data on inland water using an offshore marine, CDP, digital, multichannel seismic-reflection system. On-going modifications in field procedure, equipment configuration, equipment, and data processing will further improve the results obtained with such equipment. Future marine-style surveys conducted with the newly available hydraulic waterguns (80-, 200-, and 400-in<sup>3</sup>) would probably produce data that are a significant improvement over data obtained with the 15-in<sup>3</sup> pneumatic watergun and 40-in<sup>3</sup> airgun used during the 1980 survey. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8481","usgsCitation":"Tirey, G.B., Wise, R.A., and Winget, E.A., 1984, Common-depth-point seismic-reflection survey on the Mississippi River in the vicinity of Alton, Illinois: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-81, Report: i, 19 p.; 2 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8481.","productDescription":"Report: i, 19 p.; 2 Plates","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":39303,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0081/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145043,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0081/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39301,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0081/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39302,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0081/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":108420,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13570.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"13570"}],"country":"United States","state":"Illinois, Missouri","city":"Alton","otherGeospatial":"Mississippi River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.28633117675781,\n              38.81938114846882\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.08857727050781,\n              38.81938114846882\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.08857727050781,\n              38.909735925720305\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.28633117675781,\n              38.909735925720305\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.28633117675781,\n              38.81938114846882\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae5fc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tirey, G. Past mining activities have caused changes in the hydrogeology of the area. Lead and zinc mining has caused discontinuities and perforations in the confining shale west of the Pennsylvanian-Mississippian geologic contact (referred to as the western area), which have created artificial ground-water recharge and discharge areas. Recharge to the shallow aquifer (rocks of Mississippian age) through collapses, shafts, and drill holes in the shale has caused the formation of a groundwater \"mound\" in the vicinity of the Picher Field in Kansas and Oklahoma. Discharge of mine-contaminated ground water to Tar Creek occurs in'Oklahoma from drill holes and shafts where the potentiometric surface of the shallow aquifer is above the land surface. Mining of ore in the shallow aquifer has resulted in extensive fracturing and removal of material, which has created highly transmissive zones and voids and increased ground-water storage properties of the aquifer. In the area east of the Pennsylvanian-Mississippian geologic contact (referred to as the eastern area), fractured rock and tailings on the land surface increased the amount of water available for infiltration to the shallow aquifer; in the western area, tailings on the impermeable shale created artificial, perched aquifer systems that slowly drain to surface streams.</p><p>Pumping of the deep aquifer (rocks of Cambrian and Ordovician age) by towns and industries, which developed as a result of the mining industry, has resulted in a potential for downward movement of water from the shallow aquifer. The potential is greatest in Ottawa County, Oklahoma. Because of the large volume of water that may be transported from the shallow to the deep aquifer, open drill holes or casings present the greatest contamination hazard to water supplies in the deep aquifer.</p><p>Mining allowed oxidation of ore deposits which, on saturation with water, resulted in poor-quality water that generally contains large concentrations of sulfate and trace metals. Water from mines in the eastern area contained dissolved-solids concentrations of less than 500 mg/L (milligrams per liter), a median pH of 3.9, sulfate concentrations that ranged between 98 and 290 mg/L, and median concentrations for zinc of 37,600 pg/L (micrograms per liter), for lead of 240 pg/L, for cadmium of 180 ug/L, for iron of 70 pg/L, for manganese of 240 pg/L, and for silica of 15 mg/L. Water from mines in the western area contained dissolved-solids concentrations of generally more than 500 mg/L, a median pH of 6.8, sulfate concentrations that ranged between 170 and 2,150 mg/L, and median concentrations for zinc of 3,200 pg/L, for lead of 0 pg/L (minimum detection limit&nbsp;is 10 pg/L), for cadmium of 6 pg/L, for iron of 840 pg/L, for manganese of 440 ug/L, and for silica of 11 mg/L.</p><p>No conclusive evidence of lateral migration of water from the mines into domestic well-water supplies in the shallow aquifer was found in the study area in Kansas. Analyses of water from public-supply wells tapping the deep aquifer did not indicate contamination with trace metals, although chemical analyses from four of six wells exhibited increasing trends through time in sulfate concentrations. These increases probably reflect localized leakage of water from the shallow aquifer along corroded or leaky well casings.</p><p>Effects of abandoned lead and zinc mines on tributaries of the Spring River in the eastern area are most severe in Short Creek. Compared with water samples from three other major streams in the eastern area, a sample collected from Short Creek, 2 miles west of Galena, Kansas, during August 1981, contained the largest concentrations of dissolved sulfate (240 mg/L), zinc (25,000 pg/L), cadmium (170 pg/L), manganese (1,700 ug/L), and the lowest pH (6.0). Concentrations of these constituents are due primarily to inflow of ground water from the breccia, mines, and to seepage from chat piles in the Short Creek basin. The largest concentrations of zinc and manganese in the Spring River during August 1981, were observed in analyses of samples collected below Short Creek. In the western area, drainage from tailings, which act as perched aquifers on the impervious Pennsylvanian shales, appeared to have little effect on water quality in Willow Creek during low-flow conditions but caused larger concentrations of dissolved zinc just after a wet period during June 1981. Drainage from tailings cause large concentrations of sulfate, zinc, and cadmium in Tar Creek in Kansas. Compared with four other major streams in the western area in Kansas, Tar Creek contained the largest low-flow concentrations of sulfate (910 mg/L), zinc (5,800 pg/L), and cadmium (40ug/L).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr84439","usgsCitation":"Spruill, T.B., 1984, Assessment of water resources in lead-zinc mined areas in Cherokee County, Kansas, and adjacent areas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-439, viii, 102 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84439.","productDescription":"viii, 102 p.","numberOfPages":"113","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":346289,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0439/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143293,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0439/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma","county":"Cherokee County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -94.87655639648438,\n              36.82907321372808\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.99215698242188,\n              36.82907321372808\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.99215698242188,\n              37.31447530414411\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.87655639648438,\n              37.31447530414411\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.87655639648438,\n              36.82907321372808\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65dd88","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spruill, Timothy B.","contributorId":51724,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spruill","given":"Timothy","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162879,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This need has become even more critical with the enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (Public Law 95-87). This report, one in a series of nationwide coal province reports, presents information thematically by describing single hydrologic topics through the use of brief texts and accompanying maps, graphs, or other illustrations. The report broadly characterizes the hydrology of Area 53 in northwestern Colorado, south-central Wyoming, and northeastern Utah. \r\n\r\nThe report area, located primarily in the Wyoming Basin and Colorado Plateau physiographic provinces, consists of 14,650 square miles of diverse geology, topography, and climate. This diversity results in contrasting hydrologic characteristics. \r\n\r\nThe two major rivers, the Yampa and the White Rivers, originate in humid granitic and basaltic mountains, then flow over sedimentary rocks underlying semiarid basins to their respective confluences with the Green River. Altitudes range from 4,800 to greater than 12,000 feet above sea level. Annual precipitation in the mountains, as much as 60 inches, is generally in the form of snow. Snowmelt produces most streamflow. Precipitation in the lower altitude sedimentary basins, ranging from 8 to 16 inches, is generally insufficient to sustain streamflow; therefore, most streams originating in the basins (where most of the streams in coal-mining areas originate) are ephemeral. \r\n\r\nStreamflow quality is best in the mountains where dissolved-solids concentrations generally are small. As streams flow across the sedimentary basins, mineral dissolution from the sedimentary rocks and irrigation water with high mineral content increase the dissolved-solids concentrations in a downstream direction. Due to the semiarid climate of the basins, soils are not adequately leached; consequently, flows in the ephemeral streams usually have larger concentrations of dissolved solids than those in perennial streams. \r\n\r\nGround-water supplies are restricted by the low yields of wells due to small permeability. Most ground-water use is for domestic and stock-watering purposes; it is limited by the amount and type of dissolved material. \r\n\r\nThe ground-water ionic composition is highly variable. Dissolved-solids concentrations for aquifers sampled in Area 53 range from a minimum of 46 milligrams per liter to a maximum of 109,000 milligrams per liter. Trace element concentrations generally are not a problem. \r\n\r\nAn estimated 82 billion tons of coal exist above a depth of 6,000 feet in the Colorado parts of the area. The coal beds of greatest economic interest occur in the sedimentary deposits of the Upper Cretaceous Iles and Williams Fork Formations of the Mesaverde Group and the Upper Cretaceous Lance Formation and the Fort Union and Wasatch Formations of Tertiary age. The coal characteristically has a low sulfur content. \r\n\r\nHydrologic problems related to surface mining are erosion, sedimentation, decline in water levels, disruption of aquifers, and degradation of water quality. Because the semiarid mine areas have very little runoff and the major streams have large buffer and dilution capacities, the effects of mining on surface water are minimal. However, effects on ground water may be much more severe and long lasting.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr83765","usgsCitation":"Driver, N.E., Norris, J.M., and Kuhn, G., 1984, Hydrology of area 53, northern Great Plains and Rocky Mountain coal provinces, Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-765, vi, 93 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83765.","productDescription":"vi, 93 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":405716,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14213.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":144806,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0765/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":40144,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0765/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Wyoming and Utah","otherGeospatial":"Area 53","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -109.678,\n 39.454\n ],\n [\n -106.619,\n 39.454\n ],\n [\n -106.619,\n 41.6360\n ],\n [\n -109.678,\n 41.6360\n ],\n [\n -109.678,\n 39.454\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db601fd7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Driver, N. The concept of pe as -log (electron activity) was introduced by Jorgensen in 1945 and popularized in the geochemical literature by Sillen, who considered pe and pH as master variables in geochemical reactions. The physical significance of the concept of electron activity was challenged as early as 1928. However, only in the last two decades have sufficient thermodynamic data become available to examine this question quantitatively. The chemical nature of hydrated electrons differs greatly from that of hydrated protons, and thermodynamic data show that hydrated electrons cannot exist at physically meaningful equilibrium concentrations under natural conditions. This has important consequences for the understanding of redox processes in natural waters. These are: (1) the analogy between pe and pH as master variables is generally carried much further than is justified; (2) a thermodynamically meaningful value of redox potential cannot be assigned to disequilibrium systems; (3) the most useful approach to the study of redox characteristics is the analysis and study of multiple redox couples in the system; and (4) for all practical purposes, thermodynamically defined redox potentials do not exist (and thus cannot be measured) in natural waters. The overall implication for natural systems is that, in terms of redox reactions, each case must be considered on an individual and detailed basis. Field studies would appear to be a mandatory part of any site-specific study; conclusions regarding redox processes cannot be based solely on electrode measurements or thermodynamic stability calculations. The data are aggregated by computer into tables, graphs and maps to show the distribution of ground-water withdrawals. Withdrawals are reported by type of use and aquifer for each county in the Coastal Plain. Public-supply wells withdraw the largest quantity of ground water in the Coastal Plain, followed by industrial and agricultural wells. In 1980 public-supply withdrawals were about 280 million gallons per day; the maximum monthly rate was about 355 million gallons per day in July, and the lowest was about 215 million gallons per day in February. Average industrial withdrawals were about 65 million gallons per day. Ground-water withdrawals used for agriculture vary significantly during the year. In 1980, about 75 percent of the agricultural withdrawals occurred from June through September. Several aquifers are used as sources of water supply in the Coastal Plain. Five regional aquifers are the major sources of water for public-supply, industrial, or agricultural use. In decreasing order of withdrawals in 1980, in million gallons per day, they are: The Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system, 243; Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system, 70; Atlantic City 800-foot sand, 21; Englishtown aquifer, 12; and the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer system, 5.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr84226","usgsCitation":"Vowinkel, E., 1984, Ground-water withdrawals from the coastal plain of New Jersey, 1956-80: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 84-226, v, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr84226.","productDescription":"v, 32 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405468,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13320.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":39396,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0226/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144531,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1984/0226/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -75.75,\n 38.955137225429574\n ],\n [\n -73.916015625,\n 38.955137225429574\n ],\n [\n -73.916015625,\n 40.543026009955014\n ],\n [\n -75.75,\n 40.543026009955014\n ],\n [\n -75.75,\n 38.955137225429574\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cce4b07f02db544335","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vowinkel, E.
