Water samples from 80 wells that obtain water from the Snake River Plain aquifer and 1 well that obtains water from a shallow, discontinuous perched-water body at the Radioactive Waste Management Complex were collected and analyzed for tritium, strontium-90, plutonium-238, plutonium-239, -240 (undivided), americium-241, cesium-137, cobalt-60, and potassium-40--a naturally occurring radionuclide. The groundwater samples were analyzed at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory in Idaho. Tritium and strontium-90 concentrations ranged from below the reporting level to 80.6 +/-0.000005 and 193 +/-5x10 to the minus eight micrograms Ci/ml, respectively. Water from a disposal well at Test Area North--which has not been used to dispose of waste water since September 1972--contained 122 +/-9x10 to the minus eleven micrograms Ci/ml of plutonium-238, 500 +/-20x10 to the minus eleven of plutonium-239, -240 (undivided), 21 +/-4x10 to the minus eleven micrograms Ci/ml of americium-241, and 750 +/-20x10 to the minus eight micrograms Ci/ml cesium-137; the presence of these radionuclides was verified by resampling and reanalysis. The disposal well had 8.9 +/-0.0000009 micrograms Ci/ml of cobalt-60 on October 28, 1987, but cobalt-60 was not detected when the well was resampled on January 11, 1988. Potassium-40 concentrations were less than the reporting level in all wells. The highest salinity and selenium concentrations in shallow ground water occur in alluvium deposited by ephemeral streams and at the margins of the major alluvial fans, where there were naturally saline, fine-grained soils. Low-to-moderate salinity and selenium concentrations in shallow ground water are associated with upper and middle areas of the major alluvial fans deposited by intermittent streams. Areas with the most naturally saline soils have been irrigated in the last 40 years. These are now the areas of highest salinity and selenium concentrations in the shallow ground water. Present-day (1986) ground-water salinity is significantly correlated with natural soil salinity in these areas. Previous paleoseismicity studies in the Tooele 1&deg;x2&deg; quadrangle include reports by Gilbert (1928), Bucknam (1977), Anderson and Miller (1980), Bucknam and others (1980), and Everitt and Kaliser (1980). Geologic and geophysical data pertinent to paleoseismicity of the Tooele 1&deg;x2&deg; quadrangle can be found in reports by Mikulich and Smith (1974), Cook and others (1980), Smith and Bruhn (1984), and Arabasz and others (1987). The present study is a continuation of mapping fault scarps in 1&deg;x2&deg; quadrangles in the Basin and Range province; the purpose is to determine the youngest surface-faulting age and distribution of fault scarps for earthquake-hazards analysis.</p>\n<p>The accompanying map shows 10 areas containing late Quaternary fault scarps formed on unconsolidated sediments in the Tooele 1&deg;x2&deg; quadrangle, northwestern Utah. The faulted sediments include sandy, pebbly, to bouldery colluvium, alluvium, and lacustrine deposits. They are inferred to have been deposited in Quaternary time during the latest phase of basin-filling sedimentation.</p>\n<p>Because the map shows only scarps on unconsolidated sediments, it does not show all faults that could produce earthquakes. A comprehensive map of all Quaternary faults would also include those in bedrock and at the contact of bedrock and alluvium, as well as Quaternary faults that appear only as lineaments in surficial deposits.</p>\n<p>Initial study involved photointerpretation of high-quality 1:60,000-scale black and white aerial photographs of the map area; offsets as small as 1 m could be detected from these photos if the faults cut planar surfaces of considerable extent. A map of suspected fault scarps, identified from the photointerpretation, was compiled at a scale of 1:250,000 and served as a guide for subsequent field studies in conjunction with a similar map from Bucknam (1977). We have chosen not to connect discontinuous segments of aligned fault scarps unless there is compelling evidence of continuous surface rupture.</p>\n<p>Field studies consisted of (1) confirming scarps as fault related and deleting from the preliminary map those features that were not fault related or that had no surface offset (lineaments), (2) searching for stratigraphic indicators of amount and age of offset, and (3) measuring surface profiles according to procedures described in Bucknam and Anderson (1979a). We profiled selected fault scarps where they were sufficiently continuous and unmodified by fluvial deposition or erosion.</p>\n<p>In the early morning or late afternoon when the sun was at 1ow angles, additional field searches were made for scarps resulting from ground ruptures that had not been identified during the photo interpretation phase of the study. No additional scarps were found.</p>\n<p>Techniques that yield the relative age of fault scarps can be used as a guide to the frequency and location of relatively large earthquakes. For large regions, geologically determined rates of seismic activity in the Basin and Range province are generally in good agreement with rates determined from historic seismicity (Bucknam and Algermissen, 1984). This report contains statistical summaries of 190 water-quality characteristics and constituents determined from samples collected at 10 main-stem gaging stations and 94 sampling sites in the study area. Characteristics and constituents are compared to State water-quality standards and the number of measurements exceeding each standard is noted. Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced by the radioactive decay of uranium. Radon produced by uraniferous rocks and soils may enter a house through porous building materials and through openings in walls and floors. Radon gases has a tendency to move from the higher pressure commonly existing in the soil to the lower pressure commonly existing in the house. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA, 1986a) estimates that elevated levels of indoor radon may be associated with 5,000 to 20,000 of the 130,000 lung cancer deaths per year. They also estimate that 8 to 12 percent of the homes in the United States will have annual average indoor radon levels exceeding 4 picoCuries per liter of air (pCi/L). Above this level, the U.S. EPA recommends homeowners take remedial action. May factors control the amount of radon which may enter a home from the geologic environment. Soil drainage, permeability, and moisture content effect the amount of radon that can be released from rocks and soils (known as the emmanation) and may limit or increase how far it can migrate. Well drained, highly permeable soils facilitate the movement of radon. Soils with water content in the 8 to 15 percent range enhance the emmanation of radon (Lindmark, 1985). Daily and seasonal variations in soil and indoor radon can be caused by meteorologic factors such as barometric pressure, temperature, and wind (Clements and Wilkening, 1974; Schery and other, 1984). Construction practices also inhibit or promote entry of radon into the home (U.S. EPA, 1986b). In general, however, geology controls the source and distribution of radon (Akerblom and Wilson, 1982; Gundersen and others, 1987, 1988; Sextro and others, 1987; U.S. EPA, 1983; Peake, 1988; Peake and Hess, 1988). Chemical analyses of samples collected from January 1978 to December 1985 from wells in the Red River alluvial aquifer document the quality of water in the aquifer. In the vicinity of Lock and Dam 1, the water level measurements and water quality samples after December 1983 document postconstruction. Water levels were measured for 404 wells, and water quality samples were collected from 178 wells in the aquifer.
