The objective of this study is the development of measurement techniques and data processing methods for characterization of rock volumes that might be suitable for hosting a nuclear waste repository. One borehole, WRA1, intersected several major fracture zones, and was suitable for testing quantitative permeability estimation methods. The other borehole, URL13, appeared to intersect almost no permeable fractures; it was suitable for testing methods for the characterization of rocks of very small permeability and uniform thermo-mechanical properties in a potential repository horizon. Epithermal neutron , acoustic transit time, and single-point resistance logs provided useful, qualitative indications of fractures in the extensively fractured borehole, WRA1. A single-point log indicates both weathering and the degree of opening of a fracture-borehole intersection. All logs indicate the large intervals of mechanically and geochemically uniform, unfractured granite below depths of 300 m in the relatively unfractured borehole, URL13. Some indications of minor fracturing were identified in that borehole, with one possible fracture at a depth of about 914 m, producing a major acoustic waveform anomaly. Comparison of acoustic tube-wave attenuation with models of tube-wave attenuation in infinite fractures of given aperture provide permeability estimates ranging from equivalent single-fractured apertures of less than 0.01 mm to apertures of > 0.5 mm. One possible fracture anomaly in borehole URL13 at a depth of about 914 m corresponds with a thin mafic dike on the core where unusually large acoustic contrast may have produced the observed waveform anomaly. No indications of naturally occurring flow existed in borehole URL13; however, flowmeter measurements indicated flow at < 0.05 L/min from the upper fracture zones in borehole WRA1 to deeper fractures at depths below 800 m. Selected hydrologic data, including drainage area, period of record, and mean annual flow were compiled for the 57 continuous-record gaging stations which were active in 1985. Additionally, selected hydrologic data for 20 discontinued gaging stations are included. Data uses and funding sources were identified for the stations currently being operated in west-central Florida with a budget of $320,000. All stations have been identified as having valid and needed uses, all stations are properly funded, and no short-term project stations exist within the stream-gaging program. On the basis of the analysis, it was concluded that all stations in the present stream-gaging program should be continued in operation. Future studies also will be required because of changes in demands for streamflow information with subsequent addition and deletion of gaging stations. Consumptive use by vegetation was estimated to be 482,800 acre-ft in 1981, 432,000 acre-ft in 1982, 413,500 acre-ft in 1983, and 420,900 acre-ft in 1984 on the Arizona side of the Colorado River, and 45,400 acre-ft in 1984 on the California side of the river. Groundwater return flow from the area north of Tyson Wash in Arizona was estimated to be 0 acre-ft in 1981, 1983, and 1984 and 1,900 acre-ft in 1982. Water budget estimates of consumptive use by vegetation were compared to estimates of evapotranspiration. Estimates of evapotranspiration were from 1% less to 9% higher than estimates of consumptive use by vegetation in the area north of Tyson Wash. The percentage differences in the two estimates were within the measurement errors of the two major measured components in the water budget regardless of differences in year-to-year conditions. Estimates of consumptive use of Colorado River water calculated as measured diversions minus return flows were consistently lower than estimates of consumptive use by vegetation. Estimates of consumptive use of Colorado River water were from 18 to 37% lower than estimates of consumptive use by vegetation variations in tributary inflow, river stage, and induced seepage from the river to replace groundwater transpired by phreatophytes are not accounted for in the calculation. The quartz-barite-thorite veins and fracture zones contain the largest resources of thorium; they cut all Precambrian and Paleozoic rock types in the area and tend to strike normal to the foliation in the Proterozoic metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. The veins and fracture zones are end products of the episode of Cambrian alkaline magmatism that also produced rocks of the McClure Mountain Complex, the Gem Park Complex, the complex at Democrat Creek, and associated dikes of carbonatite, lamprophyre, and red syenite. The veins and fracture zones contain an average of 0.46 percent ThO2, 0.21 percent SLREE (total light rare-earth elements), 0.14 percent SHREE (total heavy rare-earth elements), and 0.012 percent Nb2O5; They contain reserves of 64,200 tons ThO2, 29,300 tons SLREE, 19,540 tons SHREE, 1,675 tons Nb2O5; they contain probable potential resources of 160,500 tons ThO2, 73,270 tons SLREE, 48,850 tons SHREE, and 4,185 tons Nb2O5. \r\n\r\nThe carbonatite dikes form two distinct groups: replacement carbonatites and primary magmatic carbonatites. The latter group appears to be the better source of potentially economic commodities. The primary magmatic carbonatites contain an average of 0.17 percent ThO2, 0.0097 percent Nb2O5, 0.0031 percent U3O5, and 2.15 percent total rare-earth oxides. The seven largest dikes contain reserves of 131 tons ThO2, 40 tons Nb2O5, 17 tons U3O5, and 2,500 tons SRE203 (total rare-earth oxides), and probable potential resources of 753 tons ThO2, 228 tons Nb2O5, 105 tons U3O5, and 14,300 tons SRE2O3.\r\n\r\nThe red syenite dikes contain anomalous amounts of thorium, uranium, niobium, and rare-earth elements. The data collected from these sites, along with similar data from other coal-mining states in the West, are used to evaluate methods used in predicting post-mining groundwater quality. The data include mineral-composition analyses, paste-extract analyses, and sulfur-forms analyses of coal spoil, chemical analyses of water from batch-mixing experiments; and analyses of water samples collected from wells in the coal aquifers and from wells in the saturated spoils.
