The potentiometric contours are shown at 100-foot intervals on a map at a scale of 1:250,000. The High Plains Aquifer in Wyoming underlies an area of 8,190 square miles and geologically consists of the White River Formation of Oligocene age, the Arikaree Formation of early Miocene age, the Ogallala Formation of late Miocene age, and alluvial deposits of Quaternary age. The altitude of the potentiometric surface declines from about 7 ,100 feet in southwestern Laramie County to about 4,100 feet in eastern Goshen County. Typically, the slope is between 20 and 30 feet per mile; the general direction of flow is eastward. In the area, consolidated rocks are overlain by unconsolidated deposits. The unconsolidated deposits are divided into a lower fine-grained unit and an overlying coarse-grained unit. The system is assumed to be a single unconfined unit. The top of the system is the water table and the bottom is the base of the coarse-grained deposits. The northeastern boundary is the only natural lateral hydrologic boundary. The other lateral boundaries are placed so that errors along them will not affect heads in the area of interest. Initial heads for 1943, hydraulic conductivity, and bottom elevations were used in a steady-state model that generated net flux values. It is anticipated that most of the remaining effort will center on model calibration. From the earliest observations in 1857 to the present many individuals and several different organizations have been involved in data collection at Nisqually Glacier. In order to preserve the long-term data, it was assembled and reduced to a standard format for this report. A comprehensive bibliography of scientific publications relating to the glacier is included. Between 1857 and 1979, Nisqually Glacier receded a total of 1,945 meters and advanced a total of 294 meters. Advances occurred from 1963-68 and from 1974-79. Amphibolite, the oldest metamorphic rock exposed in the quadrangle, crops out in a restricted area in the south-central part of the quadrangle. Younger, weakly metamorphosed rhyolite, basalt, and graywacke sandstone on the west edge of the quadrangle are correlated with lithologically similar rocks exposed to the southwest that comprise the Hibshi formation. The Turmus formation, located in the north-central part of the quadrangle, is composed of weakly metamorphosed andesite flow rocks, andesitic agglomerate, and related volcanic graywacke and is similar in metamorphic grade, age relations with intrusive rocks, and structural character to the rocks on the west edge of the quadrangle; it is thought to be approximately coeval with them.</p>\n<p>Seven plutonic units, ranging in composition from gabbro and diorite to alkali-feldspar granite, intrude the weakly metamorphosed rocks. Some of these plutons are offset along a northwest-trending fault of the Najd fault system but their emplacement postdates all other major tectonic episodes in the area. The weakly metamorphosed rocks were deposited on an erosional surface underlain by a pluton composed of quartz diorite.</p>\n<p>Quaternary alkali basalt crops out in the northwest part of the quadrangle. These rocks are at the southeast edge of Harrat al Hutaymah, a basalt field composed of flow rocks, tuff rings, and cinder cones.</p>\n<p>Mineral potential in the quadrangle is low. At a very small prospect pit in the north-central part of the quadrangle, massive, milky quartz veins cutting weakly metamorphosed volcanogenic sedimentary rocks are stained blue and green by copper minerals. The program has been used in Texas to show decreasing trends in dissolved-solids and total-phosphorus concentrations in Lake Arlington after the discharge of sewage effluent into the reservoir was stopped.
