This highly productive aquifer system underlies all of Florida, southern Georgia, and small parts of adjoining Alabama and South Carolina, for a total area of about 100,000 square miles. About 3 billion gallons of water per day is withdrawn from the aquifer for all uses, and, in many areas, the Floridan is the sole source of freshwater.\r\n\r\nThe aquifer system is a sequence of hydraulically connected carbonate rocks (principally limestone and some dolomite) that generally range in age from Late Paleocene to Early Miocene. The rocks vary in thickness from a featheredge where they crop out to more than 3,500 ft where the aquifer is deeply buried. The aquifer system generally consists of an upper aquifer and a lower aquifer, separated by a less permeable confining unit of highly variable properties. In parts of north Florida and southwest Georgia, there is little permeability contrast within the aquifer system. Thus in these areas the Floridan is effectively one continuous aquifer. The upper and lower aquifers are defined on the basis of permeability, and their boundaries locally do not coincide with those for either time-stratigraphic or rock-stratigraphic units.\r\n\r\nLow-permeability clastic rocks overlie much of the Floridan aquifer system. The lithology, thickness, and integrity of these low-permeability rocks have a controlling effect on the development of permeability and ground-water flow in the Floridan locally. \r\n\r\nThe Floridan aquifer system derives its permeability from openings that vary from fossil hashes and networks of many solution-widened joints to large cavernous openings in karst areas. Diffuse flow pre-dominates where the small openings occur, whereas conduit flow may occur where there are large cavernous openings. For the Upper Floridan aquifer, transmissivities are highest (greater than 1,000,000 ft squared per day) in the unconfined karst areas of central and northern Florida. Lowest transmissivities (less than 50,000 ft squared per day) occur in the Florida panhandle and southernmost Florida, where the Upper Floridan aquifer is confined by thick clay sections. The hydraulic properties of the Lower Floridan aquifer are not well known; however, this unit also contains intervals of very high transmissivity that have been attributed to paleokarst development.\r\n\r\nThe dominant feature of the Floridan flow system, both before and after ground-water development, is Upper Floridan aquifer springs, nearly all of which occur in unconfined and semiconfined parts of the aquifer in Florida. Before ground-water development, spring flow and point discharge to surface-water bodies was about 88 percent of the estimated 21,500 cubic ft per second total discharge. Current discharge (early 1980's) is about 24,100 cubic ft per second, 75 percent of which is spring flow and discharge to surface-water bodies, 17 percent is withdrawal from wells, and 8 percent is diffuse upward leakage.\r\n\r\nPumpage has been and continues to be supplied primarily by the diversion of natural outflow from the aquifer system and by induced recharge rather than by loss of water from aquifer storage. The approximately 3 billion gallons per day pumped from the Floridan aquifer system has resulted in long-term regional water-level declines of more than 10 ft in three broad areas of the flow system: (1) coastal Georgia and adjacent South Carolina and northeast Florida, (2) west-central Florida, and (3) the Florida panhandle. Saltwater has encroached as a result of pumping in a few coastal areas.\r\n\r\nIn general, the water chemistry in the Upper Floridan is related to flow and proximity to the freshwater-saltwater interface. In the unconfined or semiconfined areas where flow is vigorous, dissolved-solids concentrations are low (less than 250 milligrams per liter). Where the system is more tightly confined, flow is more sluggish and concentrations are higher (grea","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, Previous in situ egg-survival studies have documented a 100 percent mortality of cutthroat trout eggs artificially planted in potential spawning gravels in the Truckee River downstream from Reno. The relation between ambient river-quality conditions and the observed mortality of eggs, however, has not been adequately documented. This study was designed to monitor the quality of surface and intragravel water during a trout-egg incubation period that began March 10, 1980. Five sites were monitored: two upstream from Reno (background sites), one near Reno, and two downstream from Wadsworth. \r\n\r\nAfter an incubation period of about 30 days, poor egg survival was recorded at all sites, including an unexpected high mortality at the upstream background sites. Analyses of the data indicated that the principal cause of egg mortality at the two downstream sites was low concentrations (less than 5 milligrams per liter) of intragravel dissolved oxygen. Low water temperatures, rather than degraded water-quality conditions, largely contributed to the poor survival at the upstream sites. \r\n\r\nBased on the results of this study, the following were considered unlikely to be mortality factors during the incubation period: (1) high water temperatures; (2) toxicity due to ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, and zinc; and (3) decreasing intragravel dissolved oxygen caused by inflow of oxygen-poor ground water.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp2319","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs","usgsCitation":"Hoffman, R., and Scoppettone, G.G., 1988, Effect of water quality on survival of Lahontan cutthroat trout eggs in the Truckee River, west-central Nevada and eastern California: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2319, iv, 21 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2319.","productDescription":"iv, 21 p. About 73 percent of the ground water withdrawn is used for irrigation, about 17 percent for public supply, and about 7 percent for industrial, rural domestic, and livestock uses. About 8 million people, or 48 percent of the population of Texas, depend on ground water as a public or rural domestic supply. The dependence on ground water is greatest in the arid northwestern part of the State, where most of the water is used for irrigation. Tidal bores are naturally occurring, tidally generated, solitary, moving water waves up to 6 meters in height that form upstream in estuaries with semidiurnal or nearly semidiurnal tide ranges exceeding 4 meters. Estuarine settings that have tidal bores typically include meandering fluvial systems with shallow gradients. Bores are well defined, having amplitudes greater than wind- or turbulence-caused waves, and may be undular or breaking. Formation of a bore is dependent on depth and velocity of the incoming tide and river outflow. Bores may occur in series (in several channels) or in succession (marking each tidal pulse). Tidal bores propagate up tidal estuaries a greater distance than the width of the estuary and most occur within 100 kilometers upstream of the estuary mouth. Because they are dynamic, bores cause difficulties in some shipping ports and are targets for eradication. \r\n\r\nTidal bores are known to occur, or to have occurred in the recent past, in at least 67 localities in 16 countries at all latitudes, including every continent except Antarctica. Parts of Argentina, Canada, Central America, China, Mozambique, Madagascar, Northern Europe, North and South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the U.S.S.R. probably have additional undiscovered or unreported tidal bores. \r\n\r\nIn Turnagain Arm estuary in Alaska, bores cause an abrupt increase in salinity, suspended sediment, surface character, and bottom pressure, a decrease in illumination of the water column, and a change in water temperature. Tidal bores occurring in Turnagain Arm, Alaska, have the","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/cir1022","usgsCitation":"Bartsch-Winkler, S., and Lynch, D.K., 1988, Catalog of worldwide tidal bore occurrences and characteristics: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1022, iii, 17 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir1022.","productDescription":"iii, 17 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138926,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1988/1022/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31278,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1988/1022/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6f8d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bartsch-Winkler, S.","contributorId":31388,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bartsch-Winkler","given":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148334,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lynch, David K.","contributorId":88600,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lynch","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Selected hydrologic data, including drainage area, period of record, and mean annual flow were compiled for the 57 continuous-record gaging stations which were active in 1985. Additionally, selected hydrologic data for 20 discontinued gaging stations are included. Data uses and funding sources were identified for the stations currently being operated in west-central Florida with a budget of $320,000. All stations have been identified as having valid and needed uses, all stations are properly funded, and no short-term project stations exist within the stream-gaging program. On the basis of the analysis, it was concluded that all stations in the present stream-gaging program should be continued in operation. Future studies also will be required because of changes in demands for streamflow information with subsequent addition and deletion of gaging stations.
